“That’s no fun. Water’s no fun.” Wrinkling his nose, Nick took a drink anyway. The back of his mind said it was a good idea; it was advice he gave frequently on his patrols. Water and a cheeseburger, something to soak up the alcohol. “I’m glad.” Smiling at her, he continued to sip at his water. “It’s one of those things that everyone pretends to be embarrassed about getting but secretly enjoys anyway. Like cupcakes or donuts with sprinkles on them, y’know? What would you normally get?”

Ray nodded. “Yeah, I can see that.” She took another sip of her drink and cleared her throat. “Normally, I just get a whiskey and coke.” She replied with a smile. “Something, harder... I guess.” She shook her head and picked up the glass again. “It’s nice to switch it up though, from time to time.”

“Son of a bitch-” Valerie hissed, closing her eyes, her body tensing up as she felt the stranger’s hand on her arm. It still hurt like crazy, the burns after the fire fresh, even if hidden. “-get your hand off. Now.” Even the threats were outta window, with the pain lacing through her.

Ray jumped back after grabbing the girl’s arm. “Shit, I’m sorry.” She shook her head. “I had no idea.” She looked down at the burns and scrunched up her face. “Those look awful, have you been to the hospital about those?” She asked.

Sam could tell the people of East End were shaken up by the hurricane, especially the children. Aiden had been crying when she packed him and their most important belongings into the car and drove them to the fire station. And she’d seen a number of kids sniffling and wiping tears since she got here. Find a deck of cards lying around, she beckon the smaller children who had yet to fall asleep over to a table for a game of go fish. Just to take their minds off everything for a bit. The blonde was in the process of dealing out the cards to the eight or so children that had decided to play, when she saw a much older figure lingering about. “You wanna play go fish? I’m feeling a little outnumbered here, and we have enough cards for one more person to join.” It wasn’t the most productive thing to do at the moment, but she figured it was better then sitting around worrying. Card games were the best distraction she could offer.

Ray didn’t really like kids, considering everytime she was around them in the hospital, they were always vomiting on her shoes. She kept a smile, though. It was the same in this situation. She was walking around, tired of sitting still. She saw a woman surrounded by kids and walked over to them. Ray nodded when she spoke to her and sat down next to a small child with brown hair. “Hi,” She stated to the group. “I’m Ray. It’s nice to meet all of you.”

Joshua could only raise his hands in an act of silent surrender as a slight chuckle surpassed his lips. “Wasn’t trying to start something, but I will say there is no harm in self preservation you know? Best catch a few hours while you can. After all I don’t think we’ll be leaving here any time soon.” The firefighter remarked with a small smile, she was clearly a feisty one. “I’ve already spoken to them and they’re fine, but thanks for the heads up.” He added, though remained firm in his place.

Ray rubbed her eyes and nodded. “Yeah I figured that, I’ll give it a go.” She exhaled loudly and leaned back on the small cot she had been given when she got here. She nodded at his last comment and closed her eyes. “Now, how long do you think they’re going to make us stay here. I’ve got about three hours before I start getting impatient and punching people. What do you think?” She asked, opening her eyes. “Or maybe I should just walk around and ask people if they need medical assistance.” Ray shrugged.

               It was strange given the circumstances, the usually quiet fire station had become a bustling abundance of bodies and noise. Doing what he could to ensure the generator would continue through the night no matter what they faced the firefighter had retired to handing out blankets to those in need. As he came to a finish he took in the fatigued  face of the few that sat quietly alone. “I know it’s none of my business, but you look exhausted – when was the last time you slept?“

Ray didn’t know the meaning of the word sleep anymore. When the man finished speaking, she stood up from her spot and crossed her arms. “It is none of your business, and if you must know. I haven’t. Not properly in years. Next question.” She asked as she raised her eyebrows. “There are some people over there,” She nodded her head in the direction of a few injured. “Who might need extra help. I don’t need it, thanks though.” She stated a little more aggressive than she intended to.

The fire department was swirling with commotion and Nathan felt like just another victim to the circumstances they were are currently put in. But twiddling his thumbs would get himself and everyone there, nowhere so instead the male moved about the crowds in search for either another officer or someone to help him calm the crowds. “Everyone, search for loved ones and keep calm!” He calls out as he moves, feeling his obligation due to his occupation was to keep those around him from losing their heads. “Don’t run and try not to panic, if you’re hurt, let us know!” He continues to call out, noticing then an individual laying on the ground with their hand covering a bloodied wound. “What happened?” Almost immediately the detective dropped to his knees to help, careful hands removing their own to take note of their injury. “You got a shard of glass in it, we’ll need to remove it.” Pausing he glanced around him. “Can anyone help? A doctor or just some comfortable with blood?”

Ray glanced around, trying to help anyone she could. Since she was sent to the fire department it had been nothing but running around and people who were getting assistance. She pushed her hair pack into a ponytail for a second and heard someone else calling out for help. She ran over to the man and someone who had a piece of glass stuck in their arm. “Shit.” She replied. The glass was deep but Ray knew how to stop the bleeding until they were able to get them to a hospital. She smiled at who was helping them. “I’m a nurse. I can help.” She reached down and ripped a piece of her own shirt off and began wrapping it around the open wound. “I need alcohol and something to pull this glass out with.”

Bela immediately shook her head. “Oh, sorry, Ray. I was trying to go around you to throw my stuff away, but I guess I should’ve just waited, so no need to apologize.” It hadn’t helped that her mind was focused on a case that had been handed over to her recently. “You still on break or are you heading inside?” 

Ray smiled at Bela and shook her head. “It’s alright B, don’t worry.” She stepped out of her way so she could throw out her stuff. She sighed loudly and nodded. “Heading inside. You want to walk with me?” She asked with a bright smile, hoping Bela would agree.

“Oh, hey!” Nick greeted loudly. He laughed, not sure exactly what was so funny, but it just was. “Uh, only a few. I was thinking about getting one more. Do you want one? It’ll, like, totally make your night better. I mean, I came here worrying about work stuff, and now I can’t even remember what I was worrying about!”

Ray smiled and nodded. “Sure, I’ll have one. But that means that you should probably have that glass of water first.” She replied, glancing down at the cup the bartender had just placed in front of the guy. Ray ordered herself the drink he spoke of and took a sip. It was a lot sweeter than she expected. “It’s sweet. Not something I’m used too.” She chuckled. “But you’re right, it has made my night better.” She replied.

Between having to take care of a teenager who clearly hated him, and working, there were few minutes Seth had to spare. But after an exceptionally loud and furious fight with his niece, he’d been the one to storm out of the house for once, and he had decided to just get some fresh air in the park. He hadn’t really noticed the brunette, not until she turned around and was clearly shocked for a moment. “Oh – no, I’m sorry,” he joined in with her laughter, hastily taking a step back. “I wasn’t really paying attention to… anything.”

Ray smiled. “It’s alright. Long day?” She asked, tilting her head to the side. “You look exhausted, if you don’t mind me.” She normally didn’t speak out to strangers but he did almost bump into her, so she thought it would be alright. “Were you out here trying to find a place to nap?” She asked. “If so, there’s a perfect patch of grass right over there by that tree.” She turned and pointed to it, she knew it well.

Ray pulled herself off the small patch of grass she had just spent the last half an hour laying on. It seemed like it was a nice day but considering she was only out here for a few more minutes before she had back inside in the hospital, she had no idea. She picked up the remainder of her lunch and walked it over to the trash. When she turned around, someone was standing immediately behind her. “Damnit, sorry.” She replied with a slight laugh. “I didn’t know anyone was there.” She said, trying to recover from almost falling over.

Nick hardly ever got drunk, but it seemed to be a go-to of everyone else whenever things had gotten bad. Everything else having failed him, Nick went to the bar to see what the fuss was about.

“Hey, dude, did you know they make strawberry coladas?” He whispered to the person next to him in a voice that was probably far louder than he thought it was. “They so do, and it turns out they’re, like…amazing!” He laughed, and almost fell off his stool.

Ray had went to the bar to have a hard drink after the shift she just finished at the hospital. Instead, she sat down next to a seemingly fine guy and then, he turned around and almost knocked her over. She frowned and glanced over at him, who was clearly intoxicated. Ray laughed and shook her head. “Okay and how many have you had?” She asked him. She glanced over at the bartender and mouthed ‘water’ and pointed to the stranger.

“ –– Woah, woah… Hey! Hold up, you dropped something!” Harper yelled as she picked up the thing that had fallen out of their bag, before running after the person who walked in front of her. Adjusting the strap of the bag resting on her shoulder, she quickly gained on them, waving her hand around like a complete lunatic. When they seemingly slowed down and turned towards her, she slowed down, breathing heavily. “Hey. Um, you- you dropped- you dropped this. Holy shit, I really need to get- get back to the gym again!” Harper spoke, pressing both of her hands against her thighs as she looked up at them.

Ray was late, again. Ever since she sold her car, getting around East End was a pain in the ass. She wasn’t paying attention when she noticed a woman was calling out towards her. She smiled, pulling one of her headphones out. “Oh, shit. I didn’t even notice.” She chuckled, reaching her hand out for her wallet. “Thanks.” She replied. “I’d be lost without it, literally.”
