About me!

Hiya, I'm RB Tree. I want to use this blog more, to find community.

I'm a nonbinary disabled dyke, in my early 20s, and a student based in the UK. I'm autistic, dyspraxic, hypermobile, and have ADHD. I've had Long Covid since 2022, exacerbated by another infection in 2023 (reminder to wear a mask if you can).

I am white and currently am not part of any religious community - if I reblog anything about a group or community I am not part of, it is in solidarity - if I make a mistake please let me know. If you do not endeavour to take an intersectional approach in your activism, please don't engage with this blog!

My hobbies and interests include: fibre crafts, Pokémon go, puppets, and history. I love comedy TV shows, and story-based video games. I like to dress in colourful and joyful clothing, especially handmade items.

I'll probably post a variety of things, relating to the interests listed above, my experiences of disability, and anything else I consider important and/or interesting.

ive seen people talk about the whole "wow, you can't work? im jealous, i wish i could rest all the time." and like yes, it isn't restful because it's filled with distressing symptoms. but also? there is such a thing as too much down time. you genuinely don't want to be laying in bed or sitting on the couch all the time. you don't want to be stuck doing things that don't result in any tangible fulfillment, just to escape the boredom. and you certainly don't want all that on top of the pain, fatigue, etc. that comes with disability.

a lot of us don't get to go for a daily walk. we don't get to just get up and go to the store, out to eat, the library, or whatever event is happening nearby. we often can't engage with our passions, at the very least to the extent we'd like. we're stuck, and often can't meet our basic needs like hygiene. there's so much down time and nothing to fill it with. our doctors appointments might be the only thing to get us out of the house. it's depressing. it's lonely. and at a certain point you can start to wonder why you're even alive in the first place.

so no. you don't wish you could be like us. you just don't want to be slaving away to a job that doesn't care about you, takes up all your time, and prevents you from doing the things you love. so just say that instead. because as people who can't work, who are so aware of the cruelty of this system, odds are we'll understand. and instead of alienating us, we'd be able to connect with you on that. and connection and understanding is something that makes life a lot better. worth living for, even.

Procrastinating but not in a "I don't want to do this" way but in a "I want to do this but I'm not sure if I should and I don't want to have to make that decision" way. Chronic illness really fucking sucks sometimes. The procrastination isn't even really procrastination, just pacing and resting, because everyday activities exhaust me.

I saw a post the other day about how difficult mindfulness meditation can be, especially for people who are neurodivergent, and OP was frustrated that their therapist never recommended anything else. There are many opportunities to bring mindfulness, focus, and intention to activities you already like! Learning about flow state has been a real eye-opener for me.

Cause between medication, illness, low blood pressure and stigma about who is likely to have HIV I know like 3 people who are allowed to donate blood.

Btw if you don't know if you are allowed to donate blood, you can usually figure this out online with whatever service handles blood donations in your country. You can also usually just show up at a location where you can donate blood and they'll check it with you for free and without any commitment on your part.

Trying to manage chronic illnesses when I also have ADHD (and post-covid conditions which have worsened my executive dysfunction) is so difficult and I hate it.

I understand why I need to do XYZ things to manage my conditions. I understand that pacing will mean I get more energy overall. But all of that is relentlessly boring and impossible to consistently practice self control and find the motivation for, especially when I still need to do all the 'regular' taking care of myself tasks.

Being told "it's to take care of future you" doesn't make it any more possible. For 2+ years I've been consistently doing my best to take care of my eczema, moisturising my skin, using steroid cream, changing my shower routine, avoiding clothing that isn't cotton, and it STILL flares up just as bad sometimes. Overall its not as bad as it was, but all that effort every day for years just to get a 40% reduction in suffering? I simply don't have the spoons to give all the effort needed for all the different chronic illness management regimes, on top of all the 'regular' tasks, if all I get is a 40% reduction in suffering.
