HE WAS GETTING CLOSE TO DOWNING HIS drink and leaving. it had started somewhat sweet. a younger woman hearing his tales and being engaged — much more than the drunks he usually had to talk to. but as he tried to tell each story he found the questions almost doubling. at this point percy was finding it hard to finish a sentence without being interrupted. ❝ perhaps you would like to hear the story before you begin with the questions? i'm fairly certain it'll answer most of them should you just... hear me out. ❞

sophiana had been curious about all sorts of matters. there was little she could know about the world back home, especially when all fun she knew came from house parties and the books she'd managed the get her hands on. in the stories of the other, she found a new world she couldn't have even imagined. she'd interrupted a few times with questions, eyes shining with curiosity at every answer. the blonde takes a sip of her drink before nodding "do finish the story, then. i promise i'll try my best to not interrupt this time"

PERSEPHONE FALTERED FOR A MOMENT at the other witch's words. of course, it was nothing new. she'd heard that sentiment as long as she could remember. she licked her lips and pressed a smile onto her face. ❝ how succinctly put, lady trelawney, ❞ she replied sharply. ❝ my family is indeed part of high society but does not necessarily conform to your... ideologies, as dated as they are. perhaps a return to education might remind you of that. ❞ even if she was the daughter of a duke, it was aggravating for to act like effie was so beneath her.

sophiana watches the reaction of the other, a smirk on her face as she sees the rise she got out of the other "dated or not, at least we're real nobility" she emphasizes the words, venom laced in them as she looks at the other. she knew of the other's family and their history and how the rest of the aristocracy looked down upon them "or perhaps you should remind yourself of your place" she scoffs, arms folding in front of her chest as she shrugs.

after the chaos of it all, there was nothing Charles loved more than the solitude and quiet of a spring morning. months had passed and yet it seemed he was still standing, watching everyone else lives to pass him by while he never changed. the songs of the birds nearby and the tickling of new grass brushed his cheek as he contemplated his whole being. What was his life supposed to be? It had to be more than this. To his surprise he heard footsteps and turning around he found Sohpiana. "lady Trelawney-" He got to his feet and smiled. "Forgive me, I believed I was alone out here."

the hustle and bustle of the city was a strong contrast to what she was used to back home. this early morning, she found herself wandering around the outskirts of town, enjoying the quiet and peace that the lack of crowds provided. she notices a familiar frame, making her way towards the other slowly "up to no good, lord whisp?" she teases, a smile on her face as she looks around "a bit early for that, don't you think?"

there was little Letha dispised more than people who hungered for the power of others and she had found no joy when the Trelawney family decided to enter London again. Venom had formed upon her tongue and it bothered her greatly that they simply could join society back again while her house was doomed after a mistake she knew her husband hadn't intended on making. As she looked in a shop window, someone stood beside her - it didn't take long for Letha to realize it was the Trelawney daughter. "lady Sophiana right?" she said with a sweet tone, yet underneath formed with malice.

the move to london hadn't gone without protests at first, but sophiana knew better than to display her discontent publicly. she had a role to play during the day and she was adamant about sticking to it. she'd waltzed around the town square, the collection of bags filled with gowns and accessories a testament to her presence in the area. she's startled by the voice, slowly turning with a smile as she recognizes the other "the one and only" she replied with the same tone "lady letha, right?"

Arthur had always marvelled at Sophiana's ability to say things with such marvellous confidence; had Arthur said the same thing, it would have smacked of arrogance and Arthur was prideful enough. "Sophiana...it really is not a competition. I hardly think that you will have any problems finding a suitor. Be patient. Loveliness is hardly anyone's best quality. Hettie just has not gotten to know you. There is still plenty of the season left," Arthur responded with a level tone. "And I think people care very much. I do not think that poor Kit has gotten a moment's peace since."

sophiana watches the other closely, eyes narrowing for a second at the mention of a suitor. a scoff leaves her lips as she looks up at the other "and who says my interest is finding a suitor?" she furrows her brows, the blonde knew it was in her destiny to find one and it was her duty to her family. the constant reminder that her liberties would soon end if she were to get married haunted her every moment. "i merely wanted the recognition and title. i suppose that if i wore a pastel pink dress and pretended to be proper and sweet, i would've made it"

as soon as she arrived in england with her mother, she felt more alive than she had done in years. she felt invigorated by the thought of wiping the slate clean. this time marigold was determined not to get caught in her mother's spiderweb of shallow friendships that would rise or perish with social status. but where to start? it was easier to strike up a conversation at a ball. mari saw a figure standing close by, they were skimming the front page of the daily prophet and she decided to seize her chance. "a talking teapot?" she chirped up, a bright smile on her lips. "oh dear, the muggle must have gotten quite the fright — even i would!" it was not the most elegant way to strike up a conversation, but it had managed to catch their attention. "you know, i do not believe our paths have crossed yet. my mother and i only recently returned to london. i'm marigold ambrose, daughter of the duchess." she remembered to add that part now since she had been met with confusion before.

london was a breath of fresh air, a stark comparison to her country days. everything was different here and she was wondering who did she have to meet and where to go to find the trouble she was used to. it was much easier to hide her sins in the country than it was in london. here, she had to thread carefully, it seemed like there was a watchful eye wherever she went. the voice behind her startles the blonde, she shuts the paper in a hurry as an involuntary reaction "my god!" she yelps, turning to meet the other, her expression softens at the introduction. the other seemed familiar "sophiana trelawney, daughter of the duke and duchess trelawney. my pleasure." she greeted her with the polite and sweet smile she had been taught to always give "where were you before?"

Arthur had known Sophiana for what seemed like forever. Lord Trelawney had been a trusted associate of his father's and thus, the family had always been welcome guests at the house. Sophiana had been closer in age to Arthur's younger siblings but he had always found Sophiana's particular blend of class and rebellion interesting. "Lady Irene was lovely...I should know because I talked to her plenty and I am friends with her brother," he challenged Sophiana gently. "Sophiana, you know you are beautiful, but something tells me that you knew where Hettie would be turning with her decisions. She still said that you were beautiful. She said nothing bad about you. I mean, am I any less myself for not having been the diamond?"

with how close both of their families were, it was no surprise to see the other around the estate. she'd known the lockharts well, she seemed to get along enough with most of them. though, she found arthur's outlook on life amusing. "and i never said she wasn't lovely, i'm just saying i'm lovelier" she smiles smugly at the tease, head shaking at the next words "no she did not say something negative, but she could've said more. calling me beautiful, even a blind man could tell you that. we're not any less for not being chosen, but i do question her criteria" the blonde frowns "plus, arty, no one cares about the male diamond"

kit could not stop pacing, his green eyes downcast and his hands tucked neatly behind his back. now that he'd been named the diamond, his parents had even higher expectations for him, and thus far, nothing had changed. perhaps not even such a prestigious title could make someone as dull as he was into someone desirable. he rarely spent time outside the fenrin estate and when he did, he was hardly sociable, merely flitting about the outskirts of the crowd and drinking until it made those who bothered to strike up conversation with him the least bit interesting. the fact that he did not have a ledger or glass in hand at that very moment was a rarity. he risked a glance at the visitor seated on the settee and offered them a polite smile, which ended up looking much more like a grimace. ❝ i don't imagine this is what you were picturing when you came to gawk at the man named the diamond of the season. i'm not certain why she picked me either, perhaps your time would be better spent at the goldhorn estate, with lady irene. ❞

sophiana looked down at the pastel tulle gown that her mother had chosen for her. any other lady would be elated to be meeting the diamond of the season, the coveted kit fenrin, and yet she found herself bored beyond comprehension. she took a few sips of the tea she was offered as she waited patiently for the other to show. a few times she had thought to stand up and leave, but her mother's scolding would never end if she did. she always thought she was too good to go to people, they should go to her instead. at the entrance of the other she gives him a smile and a slight nod "my mother made me come here" she announces dryly, setting down the cup on the table next to her. her hand gestures to the seat in front "and to my dismay, she'll be enraged if i don't at least try to talk to you. so, i suppose, tell me about your interests."

tea cups clattered loudly as winnie apparated into the field of wildflowers behind the frell estate. she apologized profusely to her guest before she got onto her knees and began setting out everything needed for an english tea service, more or less. it had been quite a while since she'd been expected to be a hostess, and she had absorbed so many different traditions from her travels that it was sometimes a little difficult for her to remember what was considered proper where. ❝ thank you for agreeing to take tea outside. it's just so lovely today, i thought it'd be such a waste. ❞ she did know it was unusual to usher a guest out just as soon as you'd invited them in, but she had laid out a blanket and surrounded them with pillows, so she hoped they'd understand. she held her breath as she poured the tea, not wanting to spill a single drop. ❝ i must say, i'm surprised you're here to see me. most people would rather have their tea with the baron. ❞

sophiana trelawney wasn't good at making friends. in fact, she was good at losing them. it was surprising when the lady she met at the recent ball had asked her for tea, she'd agreed hoping it wouldn't be too bad to socialize a bit. she'd been in a bubble of her own doing her whole life, picking and choosing who to stick to and who to avoid, but the other had been so nice to her that she wanted to give it a chance. "it is a beautiful day, perhaps after we're done we could take a walk by the lake?" she gives the other a bright smile, she watches as the other pours the tea and reaches for a cup. "well, i suppose i'm different from most people. don't undersell yourself, winnie. you're as interesting as the baron if not more."

far be for prue to argue with her father when he offered to buy her a new dress or two, but she knew for certain that the only reason he cared about her appearance was because she hadn't been chosen as the diamond and he'd need to sell her to potential suitors with some of her actual attributes. it made her feel a little sick to her stomach, for what did a man see when he looked at young woman in a beautiful gown except for something for him to defile. prue had insisted on going shopping alone, but now she had no one to ask for an opinion. a bell announced someone else entering the shop. had they seen her through the window and come inside? or was it just a coincidence? did it even matter? she met their eyes through the reflection in the mirror and smoothed down the fabric of the dress in her arms, ❝ so, what do you think? and be brutally honest, for this may be the gown i meet my future betrothed in. ❞

sophiana saw shopping as a mere hobby, but if an onlooker were to dig deeper into her actions, it'd look like it was one of those hobbies she picked up just to stay away from her family. she'd been prowling around the town, looking for the right shop to spend her gold in. the blonde had already purchased a few jewelry items and just needed to add more gowns to her collections. she enters the shop mindlessly, before she raises a brow at the voice calling for her attention. she scans the other's gown carefully as she walks closer "i don't like the color, it's too muted" she says as she shits on one of the ornate couches "perhaps something red?"

her errands done for the day, and purchases sent home, aysun was taking the time to enjoy the bustle of the city and do some personal shopping - window shopping at least. she could only really afford a few ribbons after spending the rest of her personal allowance but she already had enough ribbons for now. she was stood outside one of the boutiques, her eyes glued to one of the dresses just visible further back in the store, imagining how beautiful she would look and feel draped in the fabric. one day once she had married well she would be able to simply walk in and purchase what she wanted, but sadly that day wasn't here yet. stepping away from the window she felt her body grazing against anothers and instantly turned to apologise. "i'm so sorry, my head was miles away. are you alright?"

sophiana had been pacing around the town trying to find something to busy her mind with. the couple of bags held in her left hand were a testament to how much she'd shopped around. she hated staying at the estate, the piano lessons and her family's uptight attitude had always annoyed her. at least walking around town gave her a break from the diplomatic air that seemed to blend into the trelawney household. she sees the familiar frame from afar, taking a few steps towards her friend. "no need to apologize, dear. i'm alright." she gives a smile, eyes looking back to the window shop "did you see anything you like?"

PERSEPHONE PACED ALONG THE path, her arms tucked behind her back. ❝ you know, i'm still not sure i really understand the whole diamond thing. i know hettie primrose thinks it's a big deal, but does everyone else? ❞ she raised an eyebrow at the person beside her. shortly after, the other eyebrow joined. ❝ not that there's anything wrong with caring or being a diamond. i'm just not very good at the whole... high society thing. ❞

"of course you don't get it" she says dryly, her tone almost dismissive. sophiana didn't know how or why, but they seemed to be going in the same direction. she hoped the other wouldn't notice her, but to her dismay she did. sophiana had been raised as if she was a princess, her ego was ever growing and her behavior was detestable for most, but unbearable for those she chose to pick on. the blonde rolls her eyes in annoyance "you're not good at high society because you're not high society, persephone"

the blonde sits in front of the piano, fingers lifting softly as she plays the last tune. she stands up from the seat softly, making her way to the sofas as she greets her guest "and i'm not saying she's not beautiful" she snarks, in reference to the recently chosen diamond. her eyes rolling slightly before she giggles "but am i not beautiful too? or was my dress too revealing? not pastel enough?" sophiana mocks with a smile as she sits down. she was sure that her lack of effort and the whispers about her attitude followed her presence and that likely didn't help in her selection, but she'd be damned if she didn't let that venomous tongue of hers speak her mind "not that i wanted to be it, anyway"

she was late, that much was obvious. there had been no one at the door to announce her arrival, which was completely fine by her, but it was still odd. most members of the ton demanded that they have their time in spotlight. the few curious lords and ladies that looked her way as she skirted around the dance floor toward the refreshment table was more than enough attention for her. she removed one of her gloves and plucked a single petit four from a silver severing platter, her mouth already watering, but before she could indulge in her delectable little treat someone approached from behind. she wasn't sure whether they meant to speak with her or had just chosen to stand uncomfortably close, but she knew she ought to properly converse with at least one person tonight. unsure where to put the petit four now that she'd touched it, she shoved the one whole damned thing into her mouth and chewed as quickly as she could. unfortunately, she was still in the process of chewing when the two of them met eyes. ❝ they haven't announced the diamond yet have they? ❞ she asked, her cheeks tinged pink. ❝ with manners like these, i think i've got a real shot at being chosen, don't you? ❞

sophiana had been drinking from the fine glass she held in her gloved hand, the sweet tasting wine was one of the things she found the most pleasant during the night. brown eyes catch the refreshment table and she wonders what other sweet treats may lie there. softly, she makes her way across the room, eyes looking around the table for something that caught her attention. she was about to ask the other for a suggestion before she catches the scene before her, a giggle escaping her lips before she smiles "no they haven't yet. i suppose that makes two of us? i don't think i'll be chosen either" she teases, a finger pointing at the table "anything you'd suggest i try?"

PERCY WALKED INTO THE ROOM, HE HAD yet to engage in much of the social activities of town. he had been unfortunate to miss the diastrous tea part the late duke had hosted, but if he was to be of any sort of aristocrat for the next decade or so, he would need to attend the season of the diamonds party. percy himself had no interest in being a diamond, in fact, he particularly disliked the idea. ❝ it's good to see that things so rarely change around here. ❞ perhaps that was a reductive statement given the recent death, but the familiarity of the event harkened back to a time even before his father had passed. ❝ are you to be a diamond this year? ❞ he asked the first person he spotted after grabbing a drink.

sophiana found balls to be quite fun, she'd get to let go for a few hours and socialize. if there was anything the young lady was great at, it was at making sure her presence was noticed by those she wanted. being the center of attention brought her no discomfort. a chuckle leaves her lips at the comment "if it were based on only looks, i suppose. maybe the emerald of the season, perhaps?" she shakes her head at her own joke, laughter following after. she knew she was trouble and not the dainty and gentle lady many would wish to see crowned "are you looking to be the diamond?"

Arienne swished her way through the room, loving the stares that she brought with her as she strutted in her scarlet dress among the ladies in their muted tones or pastels. So many of the young maids looked so very dainty like fine china. Arienne was not so very fragile. She smiled coyly at the gentlemen and ladies around her before grabbing herself a drink and handing one to the person nearest. “Here, have this, a bit of refreshment before I ask you to dance with me.”

sophiana choice of garment was bold, whereas others would've chosen pastels, she had chosen a bright emerald green, embellished with the finest of rhinestones. it was not a surprise that her eye caught another with a similar bold choice, a cheeky grin on her as she made her way to the other. she nods softly as she accepts the drink, taking a sip "i would be honored to dance with you" she gives her a smile "i'm afraid if we do dance we'll catch everyone's attention" she laughs as she eyes the other's dress and then her own, they were both a strong contrast against the pastels and whites.

MATILDA PULLS OFF HER LACE GLOVES as a servant leads her to where her desired company is resting. she dismisses the maid without being announced. a wry smile comes up on matilda's face. ❝ one might almost assume i'm an unwelcome guest with that attitude. ❞ she gestures to a seat not far from the couch. ❝ may i? ❞ but despite asking, matilda takes the seat. ❝ will i be provided with refreshments or shall i be tossed out? ❞ she teases.

brown eyes follow the other's path until she takes a seat. sophiana raises a brow at her tone, a chuckle escaping her lips "oh, you're always welcomed here." she teases, hand gesturing for one of the maids to bring them a tray of refreshments. she points at the tray on the small table as it is put before them "anything else you'd like, your majesty?" sophiana laughs, head shaking slightly "how's your evening going?"
