God Save Us All | Chapter 3.
The room was barren, and perhaps it was better that way.
There was no puzzle on the wall. No child strategically placed in the corner. No guns or glass cases. The four rooms faced each other in a circle with one glass wall and a single door leading outwards. Above the middle, four cameras stared into each room accordingly. The laughter of several others could be heard surrounding the area, some low and menacing, others high-pitched and hyena-inspired but none of them held their ground against the glimmer of that chuckle coming from above. Chains clinked and dogs snarled, often giving the impression there was a deadly beast waiting to welcome the guests-- but there'd still been no intentions of a surprise unveiling. At least not one that was obvious.
Then there was a deafening silence as the only sound was that of heavy footsteps closing in.
"Some of you," Roman began, making his way towards the centre. "May know this--- maybe, not those of you who are in your cages--- but I really am anything but an unfair host. The meaning of those rooms were explained to you beforehand. I could've left it up to you to figure it out, or -- not figure it out. I could've happily watched all of you die--- but I wanted you to know that none of this is personal. All of you play an important role in my life. This game was designed for each and every one of you," he enunciated the last few words, pointing at four of the rooms on each word. "Room number one was how you fared under pressure and how screwed your moral compass was. Nolan and Chrissy made it out without incident--- though, I'm kind of disappointed about that. I knew when I shoved you two in a room, I was making the right decision." Humming happily, he gestured to the other room.
"Daisy and Remy killed the child not knowing it was a vampire. The bullet had little to no effect, but it was nice to see that someone had the guts to do it," he scoffed, glaring at Remy. "Seth and Rosie also came out without too much incident. Sorry about your ankles, sweetheart. Glad to see you still have your wits about you." Gesturing to the last room, he grinned. "And Catalina and Declan. My two biggest fans, I'm sure," he chuckled. "It really was such a feast watching you two interact. I expected more cursing and maybe some outbursts, but you two still did an amazing job of getting out alive. Didn't know you had it in you, Cat. Killing a child. I would've stuffed a human kid beneath that bag if I knew you'd so willingly pull that trigger." The lights turned Crimson and Roman let out a smile tug at the corners of his lips in response.
"Now the second room was to test how you fared against your worst nightmares. There was a certain additive to the gas that was slowly being leaked into your rooms that made you hallucinate the nightmares you faced. Most of you, if not all of you, failed to do anything about it. It's as if your fears rule your life and frankly, that's disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it was very entertaining to watch and very telling; but it was pathetic." An array of demonic cackles resonated around them through the darkness. Grinning, he dusted off his hands before continuing. "In this third and final room, you will be facing your teammate. I've always loved violence-- I know, surprising, right?" More laughter. "I pride myself in being the baddest of the bad. You've never seen someone as sadistic as I am, and four out of eight of you probably never will again. It warmed my cold, dead heart to see some of you actually help your teammate. Even if it was for the sole expressed reason of keeping yourself alive. It was touching, in a completely amoral way--- but anyway--- I think it's about time we get this over with." Roman began walking away, lighting up a cigarette as he did so.
"One more thing," he stopped, gazing back at the four rooms. "If all of you are really too attached to each other, I'm offering mercy to anyone who gets on their knees." Turning his body accordingly, he tilted his head as the same vacant look stared back at each creature. "You beg me to let you out and I'll open the door. All you gotta do is bow down." Fixing his suit jacket, he smiled. "Anyone who's too headstrong to do so, will be forced to fight to the death with your companion--- but remember, it's a team effort. If both of you agree to bow down, that door opens," he gestured to them. "Both of you disagree and choose to fight, well then we have something to look forward to; and if one of you doesn't agree, I'll just kill you both. You have half a minute to decide. Don't disappoint me." Disappearing into the darkness, the timer above sounded loudly, signalling the beginning of the last thirty seconds.
A rhythmic pounding could be heard around the area as if feet were stomping in unison.
The snarls and chains grow louder and louder with each passing second.
Screams of pain are distant, but eerily prolonged.
Lights flicker inside each room, switching between red and white at a slow pace before they start to speed up.
Pound, pound, pound, pound, pound!
The ambience grows to a near deafening decibel and before long, the timer's up. A dead silence takes over the area as expectant gazes land on each other.
Will you fight, or bow down to your new king?
