"honestly you looked lonely and this seemed the perfect excuse to have a chat," he confessed with a shake of his head.

“please. father would not allow such a thing, even if you insisted upon it.” emma teased, a playful gleam in her eye. “i’m glad you had a nice time, though perhaps we should get you over to meet more of the people of the ton.” she suggested, her hair falling over her shoulder as she tilted her head to the side. “a gentleman named patrick…i have yet to meet him, but i’m sure it will be pleasant.”

she huffed, eyes rolling in response to her sister. despite her fathers wishes, she seemed to be doing the opposite, no marriage in sight. “father will have a long wait, trying to get someone to take me.” she spoke with amusement, a grin remaining on her face. “sounds heavenly, let’s hope he is as charming as he sounds.”

emma shook her head in amusement, blonde locks bouncing against her shoulders as she did so. "don't be so ridiculous, you're a beautiful eligible lady. besides, i think father would have a heart attack if even one sister was left without a betrothal by the end of the season."

the festivities were in full swing and the duke was certainly making the most of it, choosing to pitch himself at one of the many stalls, namely one that served alcohol. downing a shot of perhaps the finest gin he'd tasted, the man then tapped the glass, a silent plea for a refill.

after her somewhat uneventful picnic, it seemed only logical for emma to enjoy the rest of the festivities alone, exploring each of the stalls with obvious interest. it was upon passing one that she recognised the duke, her lips curving into a small smile.

"drinking so early in the daytime? please tell me my sister hasn't bored you already."

passing the flower stand, christopher couldn't help but grab the best one there for his wife, he knew that they'd cross paths again at some point that day but it didn't hurt to think of her now. as he continued on his journey he spotted a young lady standing all alone. making his way towards her he tugged a single flower from his purchase and handed it towards her, "you look as though you could use this," he chimed with a charming smile.

“in truth, i have become accustomed to believing i will be a spinster all my life.” she teased, an amused grin on her lips. in truth, she had assumed as much, but did not wish to dampen the conversation. “i have, a lady named hannah came, she seemed kind enough.” she nodded, tilting her head. “what about yourself? who purchased yours?”

Emma's family farm had provided her with the finest produce, and she had lovingly arranged a beautiful basket filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, and an assortment of homemade jams and preserves. The man who had won her bid was not someone she recognised the name of, and so it seemed proper to bring an assortment of things to treat him to.

As she stood near a charming stone bench, the soft fragrance of flowers mingled with the wholesome scent of the countryside, making her smile with contentment. A parasol was perched daintily in her gloved hand, ready to shield her from the sun's warm embrace, curious blue eyes looking round for her companion.
