I spent my last day at the Hubbard Public Library by work on my scanning. I completed the 2000-2003 folder as well as the minutes from 2004 & 2005. I scanned 1,694 pages of board minutes from 1937 to 2005. The total size of my board minutes scans is 2.64GB. I also spent fifteen minutes teaching a patron how to connect to the Wi-Fi. After I assisted patron with connecting to the Wi-Fi I went and met with Lorena and we talked for about fifteen minutes about what I liked and did not like about my time at the HPL. I enjoyed interning at the HPL and if a chance arose, I would apply to work at the HPL in a heartbeat. My favorite parts were working in Circulation and Children’s, where my least favorite was that I was unable to get a more in depth look at the Circulation and Reference work due to privacy concerns. I also got a funny good-bye card from the HPL staff.

I spent the majority of my time today working on my scanning of the library board minutes, I am currently in the 2003 year range of minutes. I find this quite impressive considering the minutes date back to 1937. In addition to working on my scanning, I label what has and has not been scanned, this way the next person who works on these minutes will know where to start. I also assisted a patron with using the money machine, which is how patrons add money to their account, the printer and the copier. I also assisted another patron with typing in her barcode information since her card would not scan. The library was busy today, the American Red Cross held a blood drive on the first floor of the library.

I spent the first hour and half of my day scanning the board minutes assisting with the Children’s Department Summer Reading program. I assisted with the book reports, painting with utensils, and at checking out materials at circulation. With today being a day before a holiday the library was short staffed so I went where I was need, which was Children’s and Circulations. Every Thursday the Great Expectation day care comes to summer reading and because of that, they need as much help as they can get, which is where I come in. Today was most likely my last day working in the Children’s Department, I really enjoyed spending time in there, and I am going miss working with the children.

I started today by completing my scanning for the 1988-1999 library board minutes. After I finished scanning these minutes, I went and met with Lorena to inform her that I completed scanning these minutes. She then gave me three folders containing board minutes from 2000-2007. These folders unlike the previous minutes were organized based on the calendar year. Since these minutes were already organized, I kept with the organization pattern that was already in place. In addition to my scanning, I spent 45 minutes assisting in the Children’s Department. This week’s activities including the book reports, the children go out to the little reading patio and writing down the title the poem posted out there, painting a paper plate with silverware and checking out a book from the Specials of the Week cart. Each activity that the children completed earned them a slip for the game raffle and for a chance to win Taco Bell coupons.

I continued with my scanning of the 1988-1999 library board minutes. I have scanned about two-thirds of these minutes. At one point, I add to ask Lorena a question about some of the budget sheets, with my question answered, I was able to return to my scanning. In addition to working on my scanning, I talked with Mary-Anne about what I will be doing in the Children’s Department on Thursday.

I started today by completed my scanning of the 1956-1988 library board minutes. I then got another set of minutes from Lorena. These minutes were from 1988-1999. I organized these minutes into the same three-year grouping as the previous minutes. After I organized the minutes, I created folders for them on the computer and continued with my scanning. I scanned almost one-fourth of the minutes in this set.

I spent the first hour of my day scanning the library board minutes. I am over 90% of the way done with this set of minutes. After I completed an hour of scanning, I spent the rest of my day in the Children’s Department. Thursdays are the busiest day for the summer reading program. There is no summer reading on Fridays and only lasts for a half of a day on Saturday, in addition, the Great Expectation Daycare walks over every Thursday for Summer Reading. I assisted Dana who is another one of the Children Librarians. We decided that it was best to have the children all doing different things instead of having them sit around. Each of us had two children at our tables at a time while the other children were coloring their placemats. While the children were at the tables with us, we had them write out the title and the favorite thing about the book that they were reading if they were old enough to do so. If they were not old enough to write, we simply had them tell us about their books. They each then got their couples of Pizza Works. When there were multiple children from the same group, we gave the coupons to the parents, guardians or teachers. During the slow point we socialized with some of the patrons in the Children’s department, and discussed the USA verses Germany World Cup game.

I spent the first hour of my day scanning the library board minutes before I went down stairs and spent an hour and half working in Tech Services. When I first got to Tech Services I met with Leslie, and Sandra, both who work in Tech Services. The first thing that happened when I arrived down stairs I was given a tour of the different sections of the Tech Services department, including Leslie’s office, work stations and the storage area. After I was given the tour Leslie explained how the ILL are sent out to other library, Ingram book orders, and the process of accepting gift, including the form that the patron complete and what the gift plates look like. After the tour was complete, Leslie and I went to her office, and with her direction, I edited and updated item records, and searched for items and placed catalog orders. The first thing that I did was edit the record an Audio Book copy of Catching Fire. There were two copies of Catching Fire, with a record for each, so instead of there being a record for each copy, the library want both copies to be under the same record. Leslie walked me through the sets of editing the records to show that there were two copies, I then deleted the excess record. After this was complete, we moved on to updating book information, including seeing if the book was a part of series. We did this by looking up the Author’s information on http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/. Leslie showed me how to edit the books information in Workflow, which is the library’s cataloging system. Once I completed editing the item in Workflow, I would enter the items call number information in word document so that shelf label could be printed. The final thing that I completed with Leslie was ordering a cataloging record through CLEVNET. Since the Hubbard Public Library is part of the CLEVNET system, catalog records are by the created by CLEVNET staff and not by the individual libraries. If the individual libraries happen to create a catalog record then the library is charged, but if the record is created by CLEVNET then it is free to library.
After I finished working with Leslie, Sandra showed she processed the new book arrivals. The first thing that I did was place the call letter labels on the spine of the book; these were the same labels that I previously made with Leslie. Once the label was placed; I placed a cover on the barcode that Sandra had previously placed on the book. The books had already been put into the system before I started working with them. I next stamped the back inside cover of each book before I moved on to my next step. The next thing that I did was place a plastic cover on the book jacket of the one book, and a Kapco cover the paper that I was working with. Once the covers were placed on the books, each of the books got a “new” sticker and was scanned into the system. We then took the books over to Circulation to see if there were any holds placed on them, since there were no holds; the books were then placed on the New Books display. Since Leslie was going on the homebound deliveries today, there was nothing else that they could show me, I returned to my scanning, I then spent an hour in Children’s so that one of the librarians can take her lunch. Once she returned from her lunch, I went back up stairs and completed another hour of scanning.

I spent the first three hours of my day working on scanning the library board minutes. I am slightly over 3/4 of the way done with this set minutes of minutes. After my three hours of scanning and lunch, I spent my remaining two hours in the Children’s Department. I assisted with the summer reading program. This week’s program was for the children to design their own placemat for the in house activity, and to complete a recipe sheet for the take home activity. In addition, each child who came in got a coupon for a free 6-inch pizza from Pizza Works.

I started today by meeting with Lorena and discussing some of the things that were discussed in the Midpoint check in. I mentioned the idea of creating Metadata for the images that I have scanned and the possibility of uploading them to a site like CONTENTdm. However, considering how far I am already into the project, and the fact that I only have two weeks left at Hubbard Public library, we did not for that as possible. In addition, the library does not have the budget to use a site like CONTENTdm. In addition to discussing the option of creating Metadata, we went over my schedule for the rest of this week. Tomorrow I will be spending my morning in Children’s, Wednesday I will be in Tech Services, and Thursday I will be back in Children’s. After I finished meeting with Lorena I continued with my scanning, I am about 2/3 of the way done with this set of minutes. At 11:00AM, I went down stairs and met with one of the Librarians in Children’s and she gave me an overview of what I will be doing tomorrow. I then went back upstairs and continued with my scanning. Then at 2:00PM, Sister Rose, who I helped before came in and asked if I could help her with her IPad, she was having difficulties getting Zinio to work. I walked her through the process of checking-out and downloading magazines. After I showed her how to use the Zinio App, she wanted some assistance with Overdrive, so I walked her through the process of using Overdrive, including how to sign in, search for books, and downloading books. Once I finished helping her, I was about done with my day, so I returned the minutes to Lorena’s office before heading home for the day.

I spent the first hour of my day scanning the library board minutes. I then went down to the Circulation desk around 10AM, and spent almost an hour there, before I was asked to assisted with the summer reading in the Children’s Department. During my first hour at the Circulation Desk I was shown how holds works by Sandra and Martha, who are two of the library clerks. The holds that are sent to other library are called Trap Holds. They are scanned in the library’s circulation software, and a receipt with the patron’s name and a pink CLEVNET slip that says that the materials are holds for other libraries in the CLEVNET system. Once I was done with the out of building holds, I was shown how to scan in households. I was then asked to place the out of building holds on a shelving set in the tech services room which was right across the hall from the Circulation Desk. I then went back to the Circulation Desk and placed on the in households on the shelves located behind desk. It was around this point when Mary-Anne, who is one of the Children’s Librarians, came to desk and asked me to help her in the Children’s Department with the summer reading.
Thursdays are the busiest day for the children’s summer reading, and I was asked to help with the signing in, filling-out of the cards, helping the children explain the number of books that they read and how many, and helping them with the weekly activities. This week’s activities consisted of the children making Fork Friends with wooden forks, yarn buttons and cloths, a take home activity where the decorated a paper plate with their favorite food, and an in house activity where they asked a librarian who did not work in the Children’s Department, their favorite food. I spent around an hour before lunch and an half an hour after lunch helping Mary-Anne.
After I was done in the Children’s Department, I returned the Circulation Desk for the remaining 1.5 hours of my shift. While at the Circulation Desk, I was shown how to check in and check out materials, place hold, create accounts and collect fines. While I was being shown how to collect fine a patron and her family came in to pay their fines, which gave me some hands on experience with the collection of fines. Sandra also showed me how to view a patrons account, change their information, check materials in or out to patrons. The Hubbard Public Library uses the term Discharge instead of checkouts. Due the issues of confidentiality, and privacy, I only use my card for viewing of account information and check-ins and discharges. The only time that I viewed a patron’s account was when I was assisting with payment of fines. The last thing that I did for the day was the creation of a library card account. The library created a fake name and account for me to use, once again so that I do view confidential/private information. Once I was shown how to created and delete an account was told to try to create and delete it myself, which I was able to do. In addition, a patron came in and asked about the Hubbard Conservation Club, since I have been a member of the Hubbard Conservation Club for the last 15 years I was able to provide him with directions and club information.
