I spent the first hour of my day scanning the library board minutes before I went down stairs and spent an hour and half working in Tech Services. When I first got to Tech Services I met with Leslie, and Sandra, both who work in Tech Services. The first thing that happened when I arrived down stairs I was given a tour of the different sections of the Tech Services department, including Leslie’s office, work stations and the storage area. After I was given the tour Leslie explained how the ILL are sent out to other library, Ingram book orders, and the process of accepting gift, including the form that the patron complete and what the gift plates look like. After the tour was complete, Leslie and I went to her office, and with her direction, I edited and updated item records, and searched for items and placed catalog orders. The first thing that I did was edit the record an Audio Book copy of Catching Fire. There were two copies of Catching Fire, with a record for each, so instead of there being a record for each copy, the library want both copies to be under the same record. Leslie walked me through the sets of editing the records to show that there were two copies, I then deleted the excess record. After this was complete, we moved on to updating book information, including seeing if the book was a part of series. We did this by looking up the Author’s information on http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/. Leslie showed me how to edit the books information in Workflow, which is the library’s cataloging system. Once I completed editing the item in Workflow, I would enter the items call number information in word document so that shelf label could be printed. The final thing that I completed with Leslie was ordering a cataloging record through CLEVNET. Since the Hubbard Public Library is part of the CLEVNET system, catalog records are by the created by CLEVNET staff and not by the individual libraries. If the individual libraries happen to create a catalog record then the library is charged, but if the record is created by CLEVNET then it is free to library.
After I finished working with Leslie, Sandra showed she processed the new book arrivals. The first thing that I did was place the call letter labels on the spine of the book; these were the same labels that I previously made with Leslie. Once the label was placed; I placed a cover on the barcode that Sandra had previously placed on the book. The books had already been put into the system before I started working with them. I next stamped the back inside cover of each book before I moved on to my next step. The next thing that I did was place a plastic cover on the book jacket of the one book, and a Kapco cover the paper that I was working with. Once the covers were placed on the books, each of the books got a “new” sticker and was scanned into the system. We then took the books over to Circulation to see if there were any holds placed on them, since there were no holds; the books were then placed on the New Books display. Since Leslie was going on the homebound deliveries today, there was nothing else that they could show me, I returned to my scanning, I then spent an hour in Children’s so that one of the librarians can take her lunch. Once she returned from her lunch, I went back up stairs and completed another hour of scanning.
