Paradigm City.

City of forgotten memories.

Right now? I’m haunted by a memory that I wish I could forget.

Usually, I’m the walking definition of a gentleman but in the case of @rdorothywayneright, I’ll admit that I fucked up pretty horribly.

Let’s just face it.

It’s wrong to put a woman into jeopardy in order to save your skin.

It shouldn’t matter if the woman in question is real or a machine.

It’s wrong, even if you knew she was a robot beforehand and it’s wrong even if you own a gigantic robot that can take out an entire city.

Hell. It’s wrong even if you have a car in range that’s capable of launching its own missles.

It’s just wrong.

So yeah. I’ll admit it. I failed miserably. I used Dorothy as a decoy so that the two of us might both live to see another day. And still, even though it went brilliantly, I have to say…I feel a fair amount of remorse over my actions, especially when she looked at me and called me a louse.

“Make yourself comfortable, Miss Wayneright. Mister Smith will get to you in no time.” With a small bow, the old man that had opened the door to let her in and lead her up here in what seems to be the mansion’s drawing room withdrew through the door they had just used to enter, silently closing it behind him.

Dorothy let her gaze slowly wander over the interior, less out of curiosity but more to get an overview over her environment. The whirring of her mechanical jolts broke the silence as she made her way across the room. But instead of heading towards the couch to take a seat as most visitors would probably have done, she walked over to the large panorama window that formed most of the opposite wall. There she stood still again, staring through the glass at the scenery outside. Paradigm City on a cloudy day.

But were there even sunny days here in this city anymore?

There are rules in this mansion. Only lovely young ladies are allowed in without an appointment.

Norman, my butler, was apparently in need of glasses.

Then again, hadn’t I been guilty of the very same mistake?

“R. Dorothy…” I muttered her very name in disbelief.

“What are you doing here?”

There was a moment of silence between them as the petite figure just stood there, rigid and still, with her eyes fixed on his face. The look she gave him became strangely intense and pervasive. Maybe it was because of the fact that androids didn’t blink?

Finally Dorothy broke the silence speaking in a calm and soft tone: “I’m afraid to tell you that the case isn’t closed yet. Those men are still out there and after me for a reason I don’t know.” This was both the truth and another aspect of this whole affair that made her feel strangely uneasy. “And at the moment I have nowhere else to go.”

After a short pause she added: “I need you to protect me, Roger Smith.”

“You need me to protect you? But you’re a r…”

The words hung in my throat. Dorothy knew she was a robot. She came here for my help. Wouldn’t it be hypocritical of me as a negotiator to deny a paying client?

If she was a human, maybe she would have grimassed at his unspoken remark or at least frowned. But Dorothy was no human, so she just kept staring at him, expressionless and silent. Yes, she was a robot and yes, she was stronger, faster and more resistant than any regular human being, but still... As long as she had no idea who those people were and why they were after her, even she would need help. His help.

When he finished speaking, her eyes slowly wandered down his figure and back up to his face as she examined his attire. Finally she gave him a brief and somehow stiff nod.

“Understood”, she stated drily after another pause.

She was indeed not possessing any money, so helping him as a form of payment for his services would only be fair. It was logical. What had made her hesitate to agree right away, though, was his statement about the dress code in his house. Was this meant to be a joke? Apparently not.

She would comply with his wish, yet couldn’t help a snarky reply:

In his tenure as a household robot for the Martin family, the NDR-114 known to those he cared for as “Andrew,” noticed many of his kind assigned to their own respective families, venturing forth about their daily chores.

@rdorothywayneright was something else. He recognized her immediately as an android; one has a tendency to recognize its own kind. However, what baffled Andrew was how human her appearance was. There was a grace and fluidity to her every movement.

Andrew wondered: who was the master craftsman who formed this android? Could he himself be upgraded in a similar manner? What changes might that bring for himself and his family?

Dorothy was indeed unique in both her appearance as well as her programming. She was one of a kind and she knew that. Yet she herself wasn’t quite sure why.

As she noticed the other android’s gaze, she slightly turned her head to face him. While doing so her body remained perfectly still, a movement so unnatural it immediately gave away her inhuman nature.

She gave the stranger a short nod as a greeting.

While she was waiting for her host to arrive, she couldn't help asking herself again why she had chosen to come here - to him. Truth to be told, she didn't have a clear answer to that, a status that made her slightly uncomfortable. Again she tried to convince herself that it was a purely logical decision. They were still after her and he was probably the only person capable of helping her for he had both the necessary skills and the knowledge of her personal situation. But still... Deep inside she had to admit that this was not the main reason for her to come here. She was here because it just... felt right... But was an android even able to feel?

A sonorous pling from across the room told her that the elevator had returned to this floor. Confident steps approached her, so Dorothy turned around again to face the man dressed all in black.

“How do you do, Roger Smith?”, she greeted him in a neutral tone.
