It's so dope when you meet people who you look up to and they're even better in person. @missjulee is just that. This woman, y'all. So genuine. Supa dupa fly + woke. Today is the day the LORD has made let us rejoice + be glad | The dopest change makers I've ever known are gracing the @ted stage in a couple and I along with 100,000 other women are rooting for them. Thanks Mo and V, for showing thousands of women what goes down when women walk. When women see injustices surrounding them, we don't sit down and watch, we make change. Thanks, Morgan, for telling me I need to eat more apples and greens and to, Vanessa, for singing "that's what sisters are for" upon that mountain top in Utah a couple months ago. "When you have more than you need, build a bigger table not a higher fence." | When Jas and I set out to celebrate our 21st birthday, our main intention was to give back. To pour into others. We grappled with different ideas on how and who to invest in. That's when The Feed Project apperared (@feedprojects). Our family is fortunate enough to have never gone hungry, despite the circumstances we've faced. "Approximately 795 MILLION PEOPLE around the world are hungry. One thing I know for sure is that patience + faith is the key to manifestation. @jasminedarby and I have always dreamed of hosting our own supper outside in Grand Coteau. #21in11 is what patience and faith gifted us. We've had the idea to celebrate our 21st Birthday this way since January, but didn't act on it until two weeks ago. Not knowing how it would manifest or what it would look like took absolute faith and patience. We wanted to be surrounded by people who loved us and whom we loved even harder. The inspirational people in our lives. The people that never gave up on us, but always gave us a seat at their table. The people who have been patient with us. The people who have let us be ourselves and nothing less. We sat around a supper table. Letting each other just be. We ate Gumbo cooked with nothing but complete Love by the most important woman in my life, my momma. (Y'all she Zydeco'd in the kitchen the whole time.) We affirmed each other standing hand in hand in the cool air under the stars. It was breathtaking. I secretly cried whilst watching my little sister and my little cousin affirming themselves because self-affirmation is key and should begin at a young age. Shed tears of Joy watching both of my grandmas having the time of there lives sharing the deepest of laughs with one another. Currently holding back tears because this is what patience and faith gives you. My grandma's Nonc used to tell her all the time, "Y'all pray hard, but play hard too." Imagine this with a Louisiana French accent. It sets the mood, I promise. Turning Twenty-One off of #Exit11 in Grand Coteau was the result of praying hard. One thing I know for sure is that everything that is for you will come to you. Have patience. Have faith. Love every single part of yourself through it all. Two weeks left until #21in11 and what I have I learned about myself this past year? I'm pretty terrible at sending emails, especially figuring out a proper subject line. I can't make banana bread because I'm usually too busy dancing in the kitchen or laughing at confusing recipes. But one of the most important lessons I've learned this year is that my gift can't be measured monetarily or with a certificate or a trophy. My gift is how horrible I am at small talk. It's a gift. Or at least I think it is. . . . I have realized this year is how much I despise small talk. Meaningless conversations. Breath with no spirit. It truly takes so much out of me when I talk to someone without pouring myself out into them. Makes me feel insignificant. Sick. Small. I find so much comfort in words and sharing stories. Letting myself be one with the person I'm speaking with by asking deep questions and learning why people are who they are whom they pretend to be. I'm beginning to appreciate "time-wasted" delving into people's lives and vice versa. I've become exhausted with the real "time wasted" on conversations that aren't inspiring growth. . . . I'm obsessed with having conversations with meaning. Ones that help me check my mic. Ones that won't make me tense up with fear of what to say next. Obsessed with meaningful exchanges and meaningful breaths full of silences. . . . It's a gift to despise small talk. So, whenever you get stuck on how everyone else seems much more gifted than you, first take a deep breath and stop comparing yourself to others, then readjust your definition of gifted. Sista-hood: Coming from a family full of sisters, sisterhood has always been important to me. There's absolutely nothing like women supporting women. From blood sisters, to sisters in Christ, to sorority sisters (@alphadeltapi) and now #GirlTrek sisters it feels amazing to have people to help you on your journey. To pick you up. To pray for you. I usually always have the #carefreeblackgirl spirit, but because of what has been goin’ on in our world, let’s just say that spirit has been a lil dim. Luckily, I have a safe haven I can always retreat back to: Good ole Grand Coteau. GC always fills me up with inspiration. The way the sun shines here. The way the breeze blows. The way my ancestors speak through the trees. Grand Coteau is so sacred to me and always reminds me that, although our world may seem dark, there is always light.
