"he has the kind of love for her that you and i once had."
❛ you’re late again. ❜
( @laytheweddingtable )
persephone sighs, wrapping an arm around eurydice's shoulder. ❝ yeah, well... believe it or not, that wasn't my choice... ❞ she gives the girl a pointed look that says eurydice should know exactly whose choice it is instead. ❝ i keep trying to tell him that's not how it works, but does he listen to me ? noooo. ❞ cue an exaggerated eye roll. ❝ i'm jussayin', if he and my mama end up in some kind of... god war, i'm not getting involved. they can sort that out themselves this time. ❞
Eurydice exhales, leaning into Persephone’s arm slightly. “I know, I know,” she sighs, tipping back the cup she held in her other hand with a quick grimace. “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. Spring just got here — we don’t need anything dying too soon.” Winter will bring hunger, cold, starvation. They’ll need food and firewood, and there’s no guarantee they’ll get it. Thankfully, the flowers still bloom and the birds still chirp. As long as the world’s alive, Eurydice thinks, they might be alright. “He’s not planning on coming and getting you anytime soon, is he?”
Persephone's gaze grows distant. She looks towards her feet for a lingering moment and gives Eurydice a tiny, crooked smile. ❝ Hope not. ❞ How many times have she and Hades had the same argument: She can't just leave early on his whim, there are consequences... And yet he doesn't listen. The goddess brightens her smile, wrinkles her nose good-naturedly. ❝ Enough talk about the grumpy old man! Tell me what's been going on up here! What have I missed? ❞
Eurydice gives her a small nod, wholly understanding. Her husband isn’t too popular up above, so she can only imagine what Persephone goes through down below. A frown pulls down her features at the question, and she sullenly answers, “It’s… been hard. No storms lately, thankfully, but… I don’t know. It feels like the wind’s about to change.” She pulls her coat tighter around her shoulders, shaking her head at herself. “It’s not all bad, though. The flowers are back now, and Orpheus,” a tiny smile lifts her lips up, “has been working on his song here and there. Still — we’re all glad you’ve returned.”
Persephone beams when Eurydice mentions Orpheus. She pulls the girl into the nearest booth and makes a gesture. Drinks quickly appear at their elbows. ❝ Ah yes. Orpheus. ❞ She lifts her glass to her lips, an excited grin behind it as she watches Eurydice acutely for her reaction. ❝ And how is that going ? ❞
Eurydice blinks, startled, but takes her drink nonetheless, tipping it back and swallowing the liquid to try and hide the smile shining out from her eyes rather than her lips. “Well, I think,” came her muted response, a casual nonchalance lifting and lowering her shoulders in a shrug. “He’s…” This time, she couldn’t help the tiny grin that quirked her mouth up. “Yeah,” she finished, still smiling to herself as she took another deep sip. “Anyways. Have you seen Mr. Hermes yet? I heard he was looking for you, too — ”
Persephone chuckles, watching Eurydice with a knowing light in her eyes. ❝ Ah, I know that look. So it's going well, then. Good. Glad he's still earning his keep. ❞ She offers the younger woman a playful wink as she tosses the rest of her drink back. ❝ As for Hermes... ❞ A deep, beleaguered sigh. ❝ He can find me. I'm enjoying your company much more right now. ❞
Eurydice’s eyes rolled upwards, playful. “He’s doing alright,” she returned, half grumbled. She couldn’t let her reputation melt away completely, even in the warmth of spring. “It sounded important,” Eurydice began, before she registered Persephone’s sigh. Another shrug rose, and she nodded, humming, “Okay, maybe not that important. What are you planning to do now that you’ve come back? The seasons are finally looking somewhat normal.” It was strange to experience, though not unwelcome, much like Persephone’s presence.
Persephone nodded. ❝ I'm glad they're starting to look that way. It's been... ❞ She stared into her cup for a moment, something that looked like... Relief ? Nerves ? A bit of shyness ? Coming into her gaze. ❝ It's been a process, that's for sure. I suppose I'll have to go visit my mama at some point... ❞ Persephone looked like she wanted to do that about as much as she wanted to cut off her own arm. ❝ Until then... not too sure. ❞
"what do you want from me?" @reachingfcrthesun
“I want to know how to go back.” Eurydice’s face was tear stained, her voice cracking with every other syllable. “I can’t — I can’t stay here. I have to go back. How do I go back?”
Persephone had never missed the alcohol more. Eurydice's words hit her right between the ribs, and she wanted nothing more than to kiss the younger woman on the forehead and wish her well. For a brief moment, she let herself consider it, let herself think about taking Eurydice by the hand and leading her out of the dark...
But it was the middle of fall, and despite everything, despite her desire for love to prevail and for happy endings to triumph, Persephone also knew that there would be consequences to a soul leaving the Underworld. So instead, her hand just landed on Eurydice's cheek. ❝ I know. If I could tell you... I would. I know it's not the answer you're looking for, Eurydice, but what I can promise is that your soul will be under my protection. ❞
Mr. Hades is a mighty king Must be making some mighty big deals Seems like he owns everything Kind of makes you wonder how it feels

word to the wise and doubt comes in for the hadestown asks!
word to the wise: what’s the best piece of advice your muse has ever received?
ooh interesting... y'know... i like to think that demeter accidentally pushed her towards hades when she was younger by giving her some 'i really love my daughter and want her to have a good, loving relationship when she gets older' advice. you know... probably gave her that mom advice of not settling for anyone who treated her like anything less than the queen she deserved to be.
then hades showed up, did exactly that, and demeter was just like 'WAIT THATS NOT WHAT I MEANT HOLD ON'.
doubt comes in: when has your muse succumbed to their greatest insecurities?
gosh i think about this a lot in terms of persephone's culpability in the show as a whole, which is a topic i find FASCINATING. like... seph as metaphor for the allies with privilege. and i think her many ways her tendency to self-medicate shows when her insecurities are getting to be too much, whether it's when her marriage is at its weakest or the horrors of the society she's been complicit in creating is just getting to be too much.
like genuinely i think it's so telling that ( proshot spoilers if you don't want them here ) during the reprise of way down hadestown, who does the camera pan to on the line "a lot of spirits gotta break/to make the underworld go round"?
persephone.
because the nightmare is only a nightmare because of the insecurity of the people in charge and how often they feed it.
;; y'all have literally been so nice and welcoming to me omg i feel so loved <3
