Realism killed the Video star

Humanity’s fickle interest on realism is adorable. It really is. But if you want realism, you need to be prepared to pay the labor, monetary, and research cost of being fully realistic. I don’t mean ‘getting every nook and cranny’ right. I just mean you need to treat being realistic as a story. Not treat stories to be realistic. 

To be a strawman for a second, who would read a book about filing spreadsheets cell by cell? Who would watch a movie where nothing is projected because it’s a realistic display of medieval technological progress? 

Now this is a strawman argument, but you get the point. In fact, these movies and stories might even be better than aiming for a ‘realistic’ story in a budget detached from their source. It’s an insufferable action to treat creative media as a simple commodity.

Creative media is not food, water, or homes that can be quantified. Appreciation is the art. Medium that depreciates loses their control on creative media. It paves for new stories, but what if those stories are made from the same rot—cloth. Cloth. I meant to use cloth idiom there.

Of course, humanity shouldn’t be concerned. If your metric of success is paper bills, then you’ve succeeded, temporarily.
