A few years ago I had a boss that said “you need to stop being a bitch. If you need to be a bitch, be a bitch to me.” For as long as I live I will never forget that.
It set a lot of things in motion for me. I immediately wanted out. So much so that I was accepting interviews for significantly lower pay - minimum wage retail jobs. I thought it through and if I worked 2 retail jobs everyday, I’d be able to make it work - it would be tight, but I could do it.
Then someone left on a different team, so I made a call. And thankfully I got my out… and better pay.
But I still had my former boss’ words on replay… “you need to stop being a bitch. If you need to be a bitch, be a bitch to me.” I didn’t want to be that person so I became the person that never says no - even if it means sacrificing my happiness because I’m concerned that if I say no it will be confused with me being a bitch.
