This book is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read and can’t believe it took me this long to read it. Finally got the tattoo I've been wanting to get for awhile! Not many people know this about me, but I have struggled with mental illness for almost my whole life. As a child I would have panic attacks so frequently that I went to counseling at school to help ease them. But it all really came to a head when I turned 18. My grandma, whom I was very close with, passed away, the same time I moved away from home to go to college; not to mention the roommate from hell. College is no joke and my anxiety shot up to extreme levels. My panic attacks were back (anyone who saw me around a spider back them could attest to this). But I grew up in a world where mental illness was a weakness and people will judge you for admitting you have it. So I never did anything about it. Never told anyone what I was going through. For four and half years, I struggled to stay above water, but I was drowning. If it wasn't for my mom and Jacob, I probably never would have gotten help. I was then diagnosed with everything underneath the sun. Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Arachnophobia, Persistent Depressive Disorder...But I was finally on the right track to getting better. I was not magically cured by all means, I still had some really low points where I considered doing the unthinkable. But I never went past a thought, because I know from experience that suicide doesn't just affect you. It affects the people around you. My dad and uncle may have ended their own lives, but they both truly saved mine. I chose this tattoo to have because a “semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.” It is apart of the @projsemicolon I wear it for my dad, my uncle, my mom, and for me. The whole point of this long post is to help spread awareness about mental health. I want my children to live in a world where they can openly talk about their mental illness, just as a person with cancer can. The more people talk about it, the more people will be open to getting help without feeling judged and the less people will feel ending their own life is the only option.
