3D - Weekly Reflections - Week 7
This week was particularly short, but I was able to mull over some things that happened in the time we had class.
Of course, there was when the PhD students came in and led the class. It was a great reminder for how scores can be discovered and used. Even though we still use them in some form in this class, it’s almost as if we have all forgotten what can come of a score as it has been a while since we had taisha’s Dance as Scores class, so for that I’m grateful.
But the one thing that I was particularly interested in was a simple comment you made when we were warming up in Friday’s class. It was just to think of ourselves as a “3-Dimensional figure,” which shouldn’t be all that surprising, but to me it felt like I was being told to think of myself as something else when it’s obvious that I already am a 3D figure. So, the more I thought about it, I was beginning to realize how it almost feels like I am associating myself to be a 2-Dimensional figure because of this continuous lack of utilization of our entire body. We are always thinking about our front--our appearance and where we are going rather than the sides and the back. What’s around us? -But to not think about that in the sense that there are obviously things and places surrounding us, but the fact that we are making ourselves aware that there’s so much of our own person that we don’t explore when we are walking around and/ or getting ready in the morning. Of course, I always think about this when dancing, but when I’m walking? No chance. It’s all about me needing to think about how ‘presentable’ I should be for which day and time and place and nothing else.
Since then, I’ve been trying to keep myself conscious of my other selves(?)/parts(?)/structures(?) that are sculpted around my flesh & bones & brain. It has been a surreal thing to think about, to say the least.
Stealing, Influence, and Identity - Weekly Reflections - Week 6
‘The Self is a constraint from which there is no escape.’
This week was filled with more of rehearsing parts you are familiar with versus finding something new. So, the most I have to reflect on are based on the reading. Of course, you could argue that I found something new when my group did or found this or that, but it did not feel like it was anything groundbreaking that I want to keep in mind for future reference, if that makes any sense.
So, I’ll simply mention things that have been marinating in my head since then.
-------------------
Something I touched upon in my paper for the reading was that it is difficult to even be confident of an original source and that there is taking even when there is credit given to a source, creating this infinite loop of figuring it out where anything came from.
Then, there was a point where Rethorst was discussing the ‘Identity’ aspect of the paper, where the Self is a constricting force, and we are constantly “self-censoring” despite having an individual voice, thus creating “agonies about overinfluence.”
When we discussed the reading as a class, ana said something interesting where replicating work helps make it more original since seeing the original piece is telling one what not to do and even make one hungrier for their own work, rather than the work that they are replicating. This is something I can particularly relate to. I am not very fond of this project because it still does not feel it is our piece. The thought that we are using Cummings’s work as a foundation to create “Quixotic Bear” feels as though it is this constant restraint. Rather than be inspired by it and create whatever work that now comes to mind, it seems as though we still have to set parameters to make sure it still falls under the same category as Chicken Soup, instead of exploring even further and beyond what it gave us. The more I rehearse it, the more I just want to create my own work, interestingly enough.
