Release
It is undoubtedly a universal reaction that, in times of struggle, one looks for coping mechanisms that offer relief from routines and obligations of everyday life. Sometimes these mechanisms are successful in taking care of the self, but other times they become a new problem in themselves. In my experience, these forms of escape morphed into a disordered thinking that began to shape my identity, and I began to to build this new reality around myself. This cage that I quickly became bound to.
There was an overwhelming perception of feeling as though I was unable to change, while all along I remained aware that changes in self-perception and self-stigmatization had to occur in order for me to make progress. I stood static for quite some time, frozen in the realization that I was allowed to release the reigns on this part of my identity. Fear came from the idea of losing something so familiar, but relief came in the understanding that I could be free of these painful thoughts and behaviours which I had long ago absorbed as part of my identity.
Breaking free from this cage marks a turning point in my life. One that involved so much effort and time, as well as such hesitation. Where I am at now, is a place that I was sure I would never reach.
This project has allowed me to visually express this pivotal time in my life. This release from a state of mind is something I’m sure others have felt just as clearly, for entirely different reasons, as monsters are born from so many different experiences, in every walk of life. This is about acknowledgement, and understanding that it is okay to move forward, to let go.
