Evaluation Of ‘The Future’ Project

Throughout this project I have researched a little bit into solar powered inspired fashion items and concepts such as, jewelry generated with energy by the human blood flow which I think is an absolutely incredible idea. I have also looked at different types of fashion garments and jewelry that look/are solar powered. However, I feel I need to develop my research further into more designers and items that are solar or energy powered to back up my own sampling pieces and for further inspiration. Through my artist research I have developed my understanding and ideas to create some samples of headpieces and jewelry. My strengths through my research is in this project I have done more artist research as well as more time based research. I have tried to create links between my research and the sampling pieces by developing the research and keeping similarities between them. I would like to improve the time based element of the project in the following project by looking further into researching and experimenting with film. In the next final major project I hope to create a fashion film of some sort.

In this project I believe I have been fairly organised and prepared as I have made sure all my posts on tumblr and all of my pages in my sketch book are all in the correct order and that parts of the project aren’t missing. I did this in the last project which if someone else looked at my blog/book it could be confusing as it didn't connect or link smoothly, however in this project it did. I have also been more prepared in organizing the photo shoot for the sampling piece I had made. To show my organisation I have used different ways for instance, spider diagrams to show initial ideas that are then later developed. I have used dawn images or photographs with descriptions beside them. I also used ‘to do’ lists to help me collect ideas and things that I had to get done and when by. I could improve my organisation by maybe showing evidence of the ‘to do’ lists that i created in my sketch book.

I have created similar 2D, 3D and time- based elements as the last project, as to why I would like to explore something different in the next project. One difference in this project to the last, is I designed and made some headpieces/jewelry for a photo shoot after. I found this really exciting and it was good to explore a different aspect of styling. I created mood boards for the 2D element and the photo shoot for the 3D element. Using the same type of time- based element as the previous project, I also had a different idea for the video. I originally filmed the photo shoot which was going to be a time- lapse however, it wasn't able to transfer over system to system so I used a back up video I luckily filmed. I could improve the 2D part of the project by developing my designs further, and the 3D by doing 2 or 3 more photo shoots to experiment with props, lighting, locations, styling for a final photo shoot. my time based element but experimenting in a longer video. Hopefully a fashion film as mentioned above.

Overall in the project I believe I have experimented with different sampling, I experimented using a studio style shoot in the project whereas in the last I used a location and natural light. This has helped me develop my lighting and studio equipment skills as well as helping develop my problem solving skills.

I have taken some small risks in this project such as trying to develop my skills doing a different time based film and taking the risk to learn how to edit it as I hadn't done it before. This has helped as it has helped me develop my skills as well as in the end having a different product to show.

From the start I have been developing my understanding of problem solving and looking further into different solutions of problems that occur but also thinking of alternative solutions just in case there is a problem. I have done this by 1. filming two different videos just in case one didn't work and luckily I did film two as one didn’t work in the end. This problem solving technique was really effective because it saved me a lot of time and worry as I had something to fall back on just in case. As the first video didn't work it saved me a lot of time which I could use productively on other parts of the project.

I haven’t really explored the environment in this project. I explored a little bit right at the start of the project in my’lush’ blog post and whether sardines and fur are sustainable. We had a 30 second pitch which was interesting as we were able to listen to everyone's views on whether their product was sustainable or not. This helped my understanding and viewpoints of the different items. Other than this project I haven't explored much else. I would like to explore it further next time.

In my opinion I think I have communicated solar energy well in my work for the project because I have researched different artists and products that use solar energy in their work as well as trying to communicate solar energy in my own sampling pieces and explaining my concept. I think I need to improve next time by looking at other issues that affect the environment and link that to my work as I haven’t done that too much so far in the project.

In this project I have tried hard to do my best and to develop my skills further than in the last project. My sketchbook and blog show this because I have looked more closely at the quality of my work and to do further research which has helped develop my final photo shoot and final part of the project. I am proud of what I have achieved in this project because I really like the work I have produced and it has turned out slightly different to what I imagined but I am happy about that.

In this project I have learnt that sometimes it is quality not quantity so I have been trying to make sure my work is better quality rather than not trying to rush things which helps in the long run because I wont have to do it again and it will be good enough for portfolios and to take to interviews. I would also like to develop my time based and artist research and linking it to my own work in the final major project.

Time -lapse Research

Looking further into different types and styles of time-lapse videos, I have found some that I like and inspire me.

The first video is quite a relaxing video which shows the beauty of nature and how flowers form and develop. This is such a lovely idea and I think the video is really beautiful. The creator has used calming music which really fits the concept of the video as flowers bloom slowly so if it was fast music it wouldn’t be as appropriate. As in the second video different scenarios have been used which keeps the viewer engaged. I believe this style of time-lapse video can inspire my time- based video or film because I could use the idea of using a video to show the development of something. Whether it being the process of organizing things for a shoot, the actual shoot, getting ready for a shoot, behind the scenes, making accessories/garments or the editing process. there are so many ideas that I could use to show the development and planning of something.

This video is of a busy city in America. I like how this video shows lots of different clips of different scenarios which gives you more of an insight. It also keeps you more engaged to watching the video as you are unaware of what the next 10 seconds will be like so you carry on watching.. then you’ve watched the whole video. So this video is very engaging compared to the first video. Different effects were also used in the video which was really cool. This video inspires my work for the time-based element of the project because I could use the idea of using different scenarios to create the video. I could also experiment in my next video to use some frames black and white or another effect/ transition.

Thirdly, this video is set in a different scenario compared to the other 3. The time- lapse is set around the set up and duration of a fashion catwalk. I think it is really interesting how it shows the whole event but in a short exciting way. Again I think it being a time- lapse video really fits the event because if it was to be slow and be a longer video, people would get bored and would not want to watch the set up of it. I could use this type of time-lapse to inspire my video next because I could use my video to create a time- lapse of the duration of a whole day or a week etc, like this clip has.

The last video is slightly different to the other three but has its similarities. It is different as it shows a different event of a photo shoot, which I really like. I like how it captures natural moments through photography. Although the music is slower and the video is fast, he music fits well. As mentioned above I could use this idea to inspire my next video for the time- based element to show an event that shows the duration of behind the scenes of a photo shoot.

Short film to go with the ‘Chasing Light’ editorial.

Towards the ‘Chasing Light’ magazine editorial, I created a short getting ready film that will goes towards the time based element of the project.

At first, I originally filmed the whole photoshoot which I was going to edit and make as behind the scenes fashion film however, I had problems with transferring and sending it on the computer to my hard drive. Luckily I also filmed a short video of myself doing the models hair and make up.

I created a short edited video after having a tutorial on premier. I learnt a lot from the tutorial which helped me successfully edit the video. I really enjoyed editing the video as I could control how I wanted it to look, how fast I could speed it up and what music I wanted in the background. I edited the video quite quickly from learning the steps but I did overcome a problem which I managed to sort out. The problem was that I has saved the video to the hard drive on the computer then I went to edit it some more on a different computer and the video wasn’t there. What I didn’t realize is that it only saves to the exact computer that you are on so I had to restart and edit it fro the beginning which was no problem as it allowed me to refresh and practice the skills I had just learnt. Next time I would like to improve by having more time to look at and practice different effects and transitions. Also to practice different text layouts and transitions.

Fashion Editoral Magazine

For the 2D and 3D elements of this project I chose styling again where I decided to create and style and editorial photoshoot. I used the base of the photoshoot reflecting on the headpieces I designed and created. I also experimented with lighting on the photoshoot where I used ‘loop lighting’ with an additional reflector. I am really happy with the outcome of the images. I love the expression on the models face and the images look very natural which fits my concept. I wasn’t sure before hand whether the headpieces would look okay in the photoshoot but it turned out they did look good. I am really happy with the lighting of the photoshoot (which I was assisted with) as it has a few shadow but not too many which shows a lighter appearance which reinforces ‘light and free spirited’ from bohemian. From the photoshoot, next time I could improve by trying da few more different pose to enhance the concept and style.

After the photoshoot, I created a fashion editorial page for a magazine. I really enjoyed this styling concept and designing, arranging and creating the pages. The pages went well with some help on indesign. To improve, I could try practice doing another fashion editorial for a magazine to develop my skills further and more independently.

Julia Sarr-Jamois

London based stylist and editor for fashion magazines Wonderland and I-D, Julia Sarr-Jamois she is also a contributor for Teen Vogue, Vogue Italia, Self Service, Double and M Le Monde. She works close with photographers such as Angelo Pennetta, Theo Wenner and Oliver Hadlee Pearch.

Jamois plays alot with idiom and texture which has won her top commerical clients.

Although she is not a photographer or designer, her works still comes under the art and fashion industry. Even though people may not look directly at magaxzine layout or the editing of a magazine, a magazine just wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t edited. Everyones work will all work together to create a final piece. I have been looking at some of the piece Julia had style/ edited and it inspires me because the layout is sometimes wacky and very funky but sometimes has minimal features which I like about it. I like the style she uses in different magazines such as, the text over the image, text rotated, simple but bold text and also the layout of images.

Emily Soto

Emily Soto is a New York based fashion photographer who plays around with ‘romantic style characterized by a perennial stream of emotively captivating’. She mainly sticks with fashion but alternatively works on art projects which she enjoys. She has been published in magazines such as, Marie Claire, Teen Vogue, Nylon, S Moda and Allure. As well as being in magazines she has been in recent exhibitions in Berlin, New York, London and Paris.

I absolutely LOVE Emily’s work. I love everything about the style, concept and the garments she used in her fashion photography. I have followed her Facebook page for a long while now and I always get lots of inspiration from her shoots to style my own photoshoots. Her work really inspires my own work because of the high- end fashion look she creates. I also think that the recent short fashion film she created was incredibly beautiful. Soto uses simple yet beautiful ideas to create them into something big and amazing which I really like.

Time lapse incorporating light

Towards research for the time based element of the project we looked at 5 different time lapse videos where there is light and shadow captured in different ways.

1. Basil Plant

The first time lapse video is simple but it quite effective. I like the idea of how they have used a simple object such as a plant and created a video to capture its natural state of how light effects the plant. i think it is interesting however some people by find it boring as it looks continuous of the same actions. I believe this video would need a lot of footage to complete the time lapse as you would need a whole day then it sped up or narrowed down. The music really adds to the video as it makes it more atmospheric and less boring. This time lapse inspires my own work because i could use the idea of using something so simple or a simple object to create an effective video.

2. Clock

I was as interested in this time lapse video as there wasn’t much to look at or really imagine. There wasn’t any music on this video which meant you were only really focusing on the clock. This video doesn’t really inspire my work because I found it boring to watch after a few seconds as it was exciting.

3. City

This video was really exciting. I really liked many aspects of the video such as, how it is all in black and white and how it shows more than one scenario. I think that makes it really effective and interesting to watch. It inspires my work because it was really exciting and I found it really interesting to watch. I could use the idea of using different scenarios with shirt footage to create a time lapse video.

4. Plant shadow

The fourth video was again simple but I think it was really effective. I like the simple idea of capturing the shadow of a plant and how the light effects it. The music in the background of the video is really relaxing which really give a calm mood to the video as you watch it. I believe this video could inspire my own time based element of the project because of the simple idea and I can use calm music to reinforce the mood depending on what my video will be about.

5. Movement of people.

The last video we briefly watched was a scenario of a barn or farm yard where the video is focused on capturing the light coming through the holes in the door. I think this looks quite effective because it shows how light changes throughout the day and how at the start there is less light than later in the day. This could inspire my own time based video for the product because I could use the whole day to capture light through objects or shadows or something similar.

Telephone Pitch

Towards English skills, we did a telephone pitch for 1 minute. We talked about our ideas, how it its to the brief and why we should win the live competition.

The pitch I did went well. I managed to introduce myself, say why I was calling and what my ideas were. I was nervous about making a phone call but I managed to try do it. On the other hand, to improve I think I need to speak a little bit slower. I also forget to mention why I should win/enter the competition so next time maybe make more short notes that are easy to remember.

Time lapse video capturing light.

Creating this time lapse video was exciting and I liked my concept of how I wanted to create the video. I wanted to create the video with images parts of the necklace and headpiece being reflected through the light by shining a torch on to it. Throughout making the video I experimented with different colour backgrounds and inside and outside to see what showed the best results. I found it difficult to get the light to reflect so in the end I used an led light (which was very bright) on a cork background to create the reflective lighting changes. Next time to improve I could use the led light and move it around more to create different reflective tones on the model and jewellery.

1. Go in a dark space and shine light on the necklace and headpiece slowly, bit by bit.

2 I could get Niamh to walk outside and capture different angles that catch the light.

Solar Fashion

Looking at the power point I have picked out two designers that use solar energy in fashion. These are two that have caught my eye and have inspired me.

Firstly I have chosen, Atelier Teratoma because of just how amazing this bag looks. I love the different details and geometric shapes used. \With the minimalistic style and neutral colours it stands out a lot and works really well. Again it looks very robotic like which I really like about it. This really inspires me to use different geometric shapes in this next project.

And secondly, Hussien Chalayan because I love how magical the garments look. I can see some resemblance in solar energy and technology in the dress which has been created to look robotic. The many layers on the dress looks very technical and as if it is electronic pads in computers. Lastly, I love how different the garments look and how they form so well. Hussien’s work could inspire my own work for this project because I could use the idea of concept to help produce my work.

The Future

So another new project starts, ‘The Future’ project. For this brief we are working towards another live brief which is asking me to choose a category between past, present and future to respond to solar energy and fashion to develop ideas to use this power. We will be using the 2D, 3D and time-based elements.

This project brief sound really interesting. I feel intrigued into how we can use solar energy to create fashion and how to utilise it. Looking at the designers from the power point, I feel inspired about more within fashion and sustainability.

I have absouletly love Lush for some time now and I have tried many products which I haven’t been disapointed with. I really look up to Lush for their ethics and morals against animal testing and being more eco- friendly and sustainable. I really believe in what they do and the beliefs in their cruelty free products.

How do artists and designers respond to the environment?

Being vegan, I have tried to minimise the amount of waste I use and cruel animal products that I use. After looking at the slideshow with the different videos showing the animal cruelty I definitely have an even stronger view and hate against animal testing and cruelty. Especially seeing the lush video, I feel horrified after the visual graphics I have witnessed. I believe it is not morally okay to use animal products or test on animals just to satisfy customers. There are many other products you can use rather than cruelty materials.

What makes a good persuasive argument?

Writing a for or against argument be really persuasive by including the following things:

- visuals

- emotive language

- rhetorical questions

- strong points and facts about your argument

- statistics

Sustainability

Sustainability is how economical materials, products and the things we do are to the environment is. I believe sustainability is highly important for now and the future because all the little things we do or waste are affecting the world much more than we think. Being economical allows us to respect the environment whereas wasting more produce that is costing more money, more effort and more time. If we don’t be sustainable we end up carrying on with the vicious cycle of damaging our planet which will impact the future generations.

Time-lapse of style flats

After experimenting with different time based platforms, I decided to respond to artist research and pick one a platform to create. I chose a time-lapse of me creating a style flat. The stye flat consisted of items and pieces of clothing that represented a specific gender. So I used items of clothing like a boys suit, ladies night shorts and then perfume bottles necklaces and watches. I really enjoyed this task as it was exciting and as I am a very organised person and love arranging things, I loved arranging the items in different looks and taking photographs of them. The style flats came out successful because they fit the brief really well and I am really happy with what the final stye flat looked like. I also think the time-lapse video I made after looks cool. Next time when I create style flats, I could improve by trying a few layouts and getting images of those as idea developments.
