“oliver,” his tone something frantic as he trips over his own feet to get to his friend. “oli. oliver. listen,” he holds his beat up phone out in front of him as he approaches. “y’know roombas? little cleaning robots? i just found out about them today but that’s not the point. look.” without hesitance he presses play on the video displayed on his phone. “people put knives on them and they fight each other. like holy shit. why hadn’t anyone told me about this until now?”

“wha- wow. you thought that too?” AMAZING. beyond amazing. obviously not for him - or for her, if she stopped to think - but amazing in at least the sense of having a shared experience with someone, which wasn’t exactly something that gabby was familiar with. “i love it,” she said, excitedly, leaning so far forward in her chair there was a definite risk of her falling as she continued with wild abandon - “were you created in a test tube and raised for murder and torture in a facility, TOO?”

he can’t help his smile as he shrugs, her excitement contagious. “yeah, no your guess is as good as mine on that front. got no fuckin’ clue where i’m from. but i, uh, grew up in a gang. guess you’d call it a gang? group of aliens who got together and robbed and murdered other aliens. like, i’m from space type of aliens,” finch shrugs again as nonchalantly as he can. “but, uh. growing up around criminals isn’t a very... wholesome experience. betting that this facility wasn’t a walk in the park either.”

          gasping dramatically, lyra leaned away from finch. “the horror! writing me out of your will is cruel and unusual punishment.” she’s only joking like she usually does, teasing finch until the batteries were flashed in her face. her entire expression morphed into a mixture of curiosity and pride. of course he had swiped one of the batteries from the milano without anyone really catching him. he was a badass thief after all, her pride and joy. “ oh snap! when did you get your hands on that? i’m impressed.”

“don’t blame me for your bad decisions!” he swallows down a giggle, instead focusing on how she looks at him with pride, hanging onto the feeling and resisting the urge to puff out his chest at the accomplishment. “damn, i think it was like... four years ago or something? didn’t really need ‘em for anything. just thought it’d be fun. and like, you should’ve seen the look on your dad’s face, he thought they’d been stolen by the aliens of the planet we were on, and it was,” only now does he giggle, the sound coming out more high pitched than he means to. “it was so fucking funny, lye. should’ve been there!”

“I’m not an idiot!” the younger of the two male’s loudly exclaimed as he instinctively punched his brother in the arm, his eyes narrowing as he folded his arms across his chest. “There’s no way it’s a real language.” To be fair, he wasn’t completely out of line- it wasn’t the first time his brother had tried to pull one over on him, but he wasn’t going to fall for it. “Really? Another lie? Come on man, tell the truth for once,” he responded with a roll of his eyes. 

“your track record says otherwise, einstein.” finch barely flinches at the punch, more than used to his brother’s roughness. “not even believing sign language is real. c’mon,” he throws his beat up phone on the table they’re sharing, gesturing to it. “google it. i dare you to.”

she sighs dramatically, imagining what it must be to live out there, among the stars, and nudges him playfully. ❝ i’m just waiting for space travel to be commercialized. like in that movie, airplane. ❞ it’s a conversation they’ve had before, and her answer never changes. ❝ but i’m sure aliens exist. ❞ there’s a knowing smirk on her lips.

“i’m sure they do. the universe is too big not to have aliens in it,” finch comments, tongue firmly placed in cheek before he continues on, “and i’unno, jay! play your cards right and i might take you to space one day. show you around.” he points the closed knife at her, tone a little dreamy as he says, “think you’d like that.”

“i haven’t asked anyone in that family for shit.” it was still weird referring to bruce wayne and all those associated with him as his family. he still didn’t necessarily feel super wanted by them all. the other young people were starting to scare him off, if he was honest. besides, he liked his shitty little car – it was dark green and ugly and rounded. he’d called it quasimodo. “fine.” he wasn’t actually complaining at all. “i’ll drive you places, it’s whatever. i mean. ask first, but yeah, it’s– whatever.” the follow up question, however, did take him a little by surprise. “no. no, we’re– my car couldn’t handle it and neither could i.”

“sounds like a waste of a millionaire family,” finch states as if commenting on the weather, tone a little distracted. “and what counts as asking first? like, is there a ten-day waiting period on when you can drive me? gimme the rules, here.” them a scoff as florian shoots down his getaway car idea, “sounds boring but i’ll spare you the heart attack. i swear, you’re like a grumpy old man sometimes.” there’s a shake of his head before he murmurs, no heat behind any of the words as he says, “won’t even help me rob a bank.”

“oh?” he leans forward in his chair, interested by the admission. “so did i. tell you what. i give you my story if you tell me yours. sound fair?”

her moves are quick when she hears a newcomer, simultaneously looking at him upside down and rolling herself gracefully off the table, coming to stand on her feet, knees bent, eyes narrowed… until he complimented her knife. then, her face lit up in excitement, “yeah?!” she stared proudly down at her rainbow knife, twirling it once before relaxing her stance, “I got plenty more where she came from. bet I got more than you,” she said smugly, her head tilting up in pride.

he’s glad she relaxes before he has to draw his knife and things start gettings stabby. but then again... “oh, that’s definitely not a competition you wanna get into, little girl.” he reaches into his pocket, flipping his butterfly knife open with a flourish. with a grace he only reserves for showing off, he flips it closed again, then open again, not looking as he does do. “so, that your handiwork on the table? looks like you gouged out half the wood. bored or somethin?”

compared to this weekend? everything was now BORING. so, she elected to break into a staff room instead. the thrill wore off relatively easily, and now she laid across one of the tables, absently stabbing one of her favorite purple knives on the table as her head hung upside down off the end. [ @recklessbehaviior ]

finch doesn’t make it a habit to check the staff rooms often---sometimes the teachers and hassle isn’t worth it---but he’s been craving that hassle, the trouble lately. the events of the past weekend haven’t rattled him so much as surprised him. as he spots the girl, he raises an eyebrow and speaks from the door, keeping his distance in case the girl pounces just as he knows he would if he was snuck up on like this.  “yo, nice knife. i think i have the same one in pink. and in black.”

Piper rolls her eyes, chuckling. “Yeah well, it’s not attached to me,” she tells him, despite the fact she had a modified tablet in her bag. That wasn’t the point. His signing, though missing bits, was always appreciated, especially in the noisy crowd. “If it’s boring, sure,” she replies. “So you’re the protesting type then? Since you say I’m not?”

"and here i thought it was!” he giggles to himself, continuing to sign as he speaks. sure, he knows ASL well enough but he’s not as fluent in it so as to keep pace with his voice as he speaks. “eh, depends. for the right cause i guess. plus, this fucking registration shit almost made me flunk outta college. now i’m on academic probation or some shit.” he rolls his eyes at his academic woes, making this issue into yet another non-issue---something he doesn’t care much about.

Piper blinks as Finch waves to get her attention, turning to him. “Finch!” Finally. She grins, happy to have someone who got her. “Am I okay?” she laughs. “Yeah, I’m fine. More of the protest online kind but I figured I’d find you or Rom here.”

“yeah, it’s what i’m asking! i almost didn’t recognize you with no computer in sight.” he pokes at her arm, signing as he speaks the next few words, skipping some he doesn’t know the meaning for, “hey, if this rally ends up boring, you wanna cover for me while i start a trash fire in the back? or we can just do it right now.”

Piper wasn’t used to public protesting. In the past, her way of protesting had been more cyber based, and far less traceable to her. But here she was. Maybe this place was beginning to have an effect on her, as uncomfortable as she felt. She had no sign to hold, and was just hoping she’d find someone she knew. Romily or Finch or Elliot even. They had to be here somewhere, right?

it was a conflicting set of emotions that led finch to the rally. he didn’t consider himself a mutant but his powers were still dangerous to anyone who knew them.  and registration was a scary thought to him, so---protesting seemed like his cup of tea, right? so long as a fight broke out he was golden. 

he spots piper over the crowd, brow furrowing has he sees her. “pipes? yo, piper!” he jogs over to his friend, waving a hand in her field of vision in case she can’t hear him. “didn’t take you for the protesting type. you okay?”

utama watches the other with an air of dislike.“kamar-taj” the girl emphasised not resisting the urge to roll her eyes. “it’s a community in the himalayas, a rather advanced one actually,” she sighed, her annoyance at the other’s actions clear. “no i’m not,” she snaps. “but that doesn’t mean i don’t deserve some common decency, libraries are meant for books not knives,”

“advanced society, huh?” he makes a sound like he’s not impressed at her words, turning his gaze back onto his blade, testing the sharpness of it against his thumb. “sounds like someplace i gotta visit. maybe they’ll appreciate me and my knives there.” he looks back up at her, knife loosely held in her direction. “meantime---mind your own business, common decency.”

“i guess, but you’re a weird fuck for thinking it.” florian grinned back, scoffing out a short laugh. it was an affectionate expression, despite how harsh the words might have been on their own. florian didn’t like to admit it, but he could be rather soft sometimes, and finch really brought that out in him if he wasn’t careful. “share the wealth – i bought the cheapest car i could, pre-bruce. besides, you could ask for a ride, you know. conversations are a two way street.”

“yeah, and now post-bruce?” finch has to stop himself from waggling his eyebrows at the suggestion. if there’s anything his upbringing taught him it’s how to act charming to get to the free shit. still, he hopes florian will take it as a joke; he doesn’t want to offend one of the few people who actually want to sleep with him. “hope you know that means you’re my designated driver now---sorry, i don’t make the rules. you’re stuck with me, dude.” it’s then that he winks, a clumsy gesture, but a well meaning one. “just like, one question. what’s your stance on being a getaway driver? completely hypothetical, of course.”
