Did you know that the Icelandic horse is a unique breed that came into Iceland with the first settlers from Norway 1100 years ago? Archeological digs in Europe have revealed that it is descended from an ancient breed of horses that is now extinct outside of Iceland, where it has been preserved in isolation.

You should definitely consider this when travelling to Iceland!

Horse riding is a great way to explore unspoiled nature, offering stunning, views of panoramic landscapes and grazing sheep. Riding tours are offered throughout Iceland by various and numerous farms, many of which are only a few minutes outside of Reykjavik. The tours suit all levels of experience and can last anywhere between half a day to ten days. It should be noted that riding is not offered everywhere during the winter. For horse riding in the winter, prior inquiry to horse riding tour operators should help you. Moreover, in September there is a unique way to experience the Icelandic horse besides the typical riding tours. One of Iceland's oldest agricultural tradition takes place during this time, at the annual horse and sheep roundups. Each farming community across the country herd hundreds of sheep and in some places horses together in the surroundings of stunning mountains and isolated pastures.

When you join a tour, you will be provided with glacier equipment, safety gear, and a guide to show you the ropes. The easier tours will explore the lower portion of the glacier and provide an introduction to walking on glacial ice, and the more difficult tours will take you to the icefall or the cap of the glacier and might even include some ice climbing.

2. Snorkeling at Silfra

Located in Thingvellir National Park, the Silfra rift is a fissure that lies between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The water is fed from the meltwater of a nearby glacier and visibility is excellent. Because the water is between 2–4°C, drysuits are necessary for the 30-40 minute float tours through the rift. Diving tours are also offered here, but only for advanced divers as it is a very technical dive.

Did you know that... The Blue Lagoon started as a pool of wastewater from the Svartsengi geothermal plant in 1976. The first person to bathe there was Valur Margeirsson in 1981. He was met with some resistance prior to taking the first dip as people thought he was mad for wanting to bath in a "blue mud pool". He and others soon began to notice the unusual but remarkable healing qualities of the azure waters. Nowadays, The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa found on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland. It is the most popular attraction in Iceland, drawing people from all across the world. The Blue Lagoon is considered to have such notable regenerative qualities because the water is rich in silica and sulphur. A research and development facility on site finds cures and remedies for skin ailments, and silica mud is available for free on the sides of the pool for guests to enjoy a face-mask.

Arctic Fox The Arctic fox is a carnivore animal that lives inland. Their usual diet consists primarily of lemmings, but sometimes they can hunt for smaller animals like sea birds, fish, and other marine life.
