Izana's growing up fast; soon Karen would have to take him shopping, though they might have to rely on takeout for a period of time following the trip... but she's not too worried this time. Laying down in the futon with Izana tucked comfortably against her side and Emma sleeping in her crib, she plays with his wisps of silvery hair instead of paying attention to the night news playing on their old tv.
She thinks about asking him what he thinks about getting a new dad, but figures there will be plenty of time to introduce him to Makoto in the future. Instead, she asks, "Izana, do you like puppies or kitties? What would you name it?"
Getting a pet had been an impossible dream before, but... she thinks they're allowed to move from dreams to plans, now.
Izana fights against sleep.
It is the villain of the night, with its slow, but ever encroaching strength. It isn't always his enemy, but right here, right now, it is as its tendrils slowly pull him away from spending more time with his family.
It isn't often that Izana gets to spend time with his mother at night. He knows she's very busy, and must work very hard, but it doesn't stop him from missing her. He knows other kids go home to their mothers and their home-cooked meals every day, but Izana still thinks his mom is the best. In the quiet moments listening to her voice and the steady breathing of his little sister he ponders the questions.
He likes dogs very much, they're very loyal, and it's nice to have someone who is always ready to play. Cats are very cute too, and he loves touching their paws and watching them walk as if they own the world. Izana wants both, but never asks for either because he knows they're expensive. He thinks a little more, and finally responds "How about Hachiko for a puppy? When it grows up it can protect Emma and you."

this whole comic has me on the floor, especially the part with karen... izana calling her a liar, not because she's not his mother, but because she said "you'll be alone from now on"... him going back to tenjiku right after that bc he, in fact, has never been alone....

oh my god today is the 2nd year anni of this blog. 2 years since shinichiro sano ruined my life.
honestly i always saw shinichiro's "i'll pass the BD to you and then to manjiro" as something pretty reasonable LOL
the BD is shinichiro's life. he worked so hard to keep it a gang that has morals and does not prey on the weak. even when they were the strongest, even when they had the most power and influence, he didn't let it get corrupted. when he thought they had reached their peak, instead of looking for MORE power (which by that point they would only get by getting into real crime) like takeomi wanted, he stepped down and let the next generation take over, and they honored his legacy by doing the same. eight generations in five years means none of the leaders stayed for long, which makes me think they were older and stepped down at 18 like he did.
i'm pretty sure he wanted that for izana and mikey. izana raises his own generation, and when they reach the top, he passes it on to their little brother, who then raises his own generation and passes it on to the next when he reaches the top. in shinichiro's eyes, they're only meant to lead the BD for a couple of years, and then move on to adulthood. to spend their teenage years being young and stupid and reckless and make lifelong bonds. to make memories to look back on fondly when times get hard.
seven (and then eight, with izana coming into the picture) generations means he didn't even mean to give mikey the BD immediately. he waited until he was older, even tho most gangs we see in the series were formed when the leaders were 13/14. a big theme in tokyo revengers is how painful lonelines is, and i know shinichiro was lonely too, considering how messed up his home life was (this not even taking into account the whole time leaping thing). it's part of why he even made his own team to begin with, so him passing it down to his little brothers is him making sure they grew up well and surrounded by people who they could rely on, so shin spent years making sure the black dragon could be that safe place for his family. i can only imagine how heartbroken he was to see that very same team get corrupted as badly as it did.
shinichiro really sees any sad lonely kid and goes "yeah i'll adopt you too why not"

Mikey's steps slow to a halt as he listens to Shinichiro. The sensation of fear hadn't cross him for a long time , not when a gun was pointed to head , and when his own hands were stain in red.
Yet , there's something utterly haunting about the way his brother speaks of this as if it were his reality , a stream of words without pause detailing a world that doesn't exist. ( or perhaps never came to pass ? ) Mikey had never once considered what it would be like to be bound to his own flesh , just a shell to watch the world pass by.
" Hey — ? " he places his hand on Shinichiro's shoulder in support. He's too fragile to think of such things. It's Mikey's turn to protect him , even if it's from his own mind. " I'm right here. " but just as suddenly as the story was recounted it seems to stop.
Quietly Mikey brings them to a shaded spot beneath a tree where a gentle breeze passes by carrying a wave of fresh air without the chill of the outdoors. Tentatively he gazes as Shinichiro from the corner of his eyes." Is that the dream you were having ? Were you in a place where I was hurt instead ? "
It was painful to think that not even slumber would show mercy to the man who only knew how to give. A bad dream , Shinichiro had said. Then what this waking world be ? A nightmare ? No — he'll bury anything , anyone , he needs to.
this is not shinichiro's body, and this is not shinichiro's brother.
shinichiro knows dreams, when he is awake and when he is asleep. when he is awake, his dreams are ambition to shout into the winds above the sound of his cheering comrades. when he is asleep, they are naive but hopeful futures, with three siblings instead of two, with two parents instead of none, with a home full of laughter instead of echoes of what should've beens. right now, he is not asleep, but he does not feel awake, eitherㅤ───ㅤhe's stuck somewhere in between, like the lull in time upon waking up late at night, lost and disoriented, lights off with the television tuned to static, wondering if the world was still breathing, fearing he was all alone in the universe.
manjiro is here, but it feels like he shouldn't be. shinichiro's here, but it feels like he doesn't want to.
something's wrong. something's wrong, something's wrong, and shinichiro feels like he's falling down, feels the biting wind on his cheeks that had once felt like a guidance, feels the freezing waters of a turbulent storm. feels his lungs turn to ice, feels the peace of a misery drowned, weighted down by a soul heavier than the world on his back.
