WTD gripes

- there is an all encompassing disrespect to the losers club. the book is so so insistent that this group of children are special. their ka tet is undermined by the joining of their predecessors in the fight against IT! yes i understand that this is a tv show meant for a wide audience and we need good guys and bad guys and a victory, yes i understand that the vast majority of people who watch welcome to derry do not care this deeply about the source material, but there’s something disrespectful about it. i love those kids and it just seems too much like trying to recapture lightning in a bottle.

-they overuse the deadlights! its a joke online that “big p is spamming the lights” and yeah i agree! the only person who had a normal reaction to the deadlights was ingrid! there is no way that will and the entire underclass student body would have just shrugged that off. audra denbrough was a vegetable after her exposure and it took a lot of time for her to even begin to recover, how is will snapping out and then partaking in the boss battle???

-i was so sad that we didn’t see a single pop culture monster that IT took the form of ESPECIALLY IN THE 60s!!! THE HEIGHT OF THE MOVIE MONSTER CRAZE THAT DIRECTLY INFLUENCED KING TO WRITE THIS STORY!!! yeah im aware of copyright issues but still!! mandi bossard on tiktok says it really well: “andy muschietti has made it that all these kids see fear as their deepest trauma, where in the book, these kids have experienced horrific trauma but they see IT as the monsters that they’re scared of from the movies”

i really think that’s what’s so powerful about the book. whoever said stephen king doesn’t write about scary things, he writes about people being scared is so correct. the way he describes the creature from the black lagoon is so viscerally frightening because it’s how the child is seeing it! the creature is rewritten in our mind filtered through his description. having “IT becomes the creature from the black lagoon scares kid” wouldn’t translate on screen to a modern adult audience. It’s a green fish guy who cares. so they have to cater to the adult audience with more adult fears.
