"I don’t know why you messaged me this anon. It seems to me that your going through something. That which I have no knowledge of. Nor can I really help you with. You feel how you want to feel, whether its JTHM, or something else. JTHM isn't everyone’s cup of tea."
my message wasn't just for you, i'm not targeting just you, i don't know how much actually intelligent shit you in particular have to say to me, my messages are for everyone who likes this comic uncritically. I had sent you that message because i want you and other people who like this fucking comic to open their fucking eyes and start understanding and criticizing it's ableist messages. is that not important to you and anyone else here? do the messages and implications of media not matter anymore? it's pretty strange how when it comes to JTHM you don't seem to care about the messages and implications of media and the way that certain pieces of media handles and tries to speak on sensitive topics, yet there are a shit load of posts in your 'likes' section showing people complaining and criticizing some random story (the dragon slayer) over how it handled topics like misogyny and sexual assault. i haven't read that story so i don't know if any of those critiques that you've liked other peoples posts over are valid or not, but it's odd how one minute you seem to care about the implications and messages that people can possibly put out there about serious topics through the art that they create but then when you talk about JTHM you suddenly don't give a shit about any of that anymore. why is that huh? is it because that "dragon slayer" shit deals with topics like misogyny and sexual assault - and to criticize it for THAT would mean coming to defense of women and SA victims, which is very easy and socially acceptable to do - but to criticize JTHM for its messages and intentions that its creator puts into it and for the way that jhonen talks about johnny and the topics that character embodies and the people that he's meant to be parodying would mean coming to the defense of unconventionally mentally unwell people, people who are violent and hateful and disgusting and who lack self-control, the types of people who would have breakdowns in public, the types of people who would seriously consider suicide over not getting a slushie, who would kill their girlfriends? no one wants to defend THOSE people, is that why you don't?
"JTHM was never a manual in morality. Its a dark humored comic about a man, feeding an eldritch horror blood wall, who kills people with sporks. Containing Meanwhile’s of children turning into ancient gods to fight at a crosswalk. From that little bit, I don’t take this comic series all too seriously. Who ever’s looking into JTHM as a golden message on ill people need professional help of their own."
i'm not asking for this comic to be a manual, i don't think all media needs to give out healthy and politically/morally correct morals and depictions of things all the time, but what people SHOULDN'T do is do the exact opposite. media doesn't need to give out correct and positive messages all the time but it shouldn't give out incorrect or negative messages. jhonen didn't make JTHM just because he felt like it, he didn't choose to make this comic about a mentally unwell murderer just because he liked that idea for no particular reason. these decisions that he made about his comic were rooted in offensive opinions and negative attitudes he has towards anti-social people and depressive suicidal people and bullied people, towards people who develop bleak and nihilistic beliefs often as a symptom of their own misery and mental health issues, towards people who struggle to be nice and optimistic and pacifistic all the time. jhonen has said multiple times that he made JTHM because he thought it would be funny, which would have been fine if he had no specific reason WHY he found anything in this comic funny, but it's obvious from the way that jhonen talks about johnny that the reason why he likes laughing johnny is because he looks down on people who act and think like johnny, of which there are plenty of people and those people don't need to be laughed at, they need to be helped and accepted and not have all the blame and responsibility for the way the act and feel put onto themselves solely.
i'm not saying that hate and violence and suicide and nihilistic beliefs should be encouraged, what i am saying is that people who ARE hateful and violent and suicidal and nihilistic shouldn't be laughed at or judged or dehumanized or paraded around like pariahs for "normal people" to gawk at or have all the blame for their issues put on themselves or be expected to fix themselves with ease. we should, at the very, humanize and sympathize with these types of people so as not socially ostracize and isolate them anymore which just hurts them and makes their lives worse. why do they deserve that? because they hurt people? everybody hurts other people to some degree, people just pick-and-choose which types of harm they want to condemn the most.
also, stop saying shit like "You feel how you want to feel" "If you take Jhonen seriously, that's a YOU problem." "hes a celebrity who has no affect on my life. And Has no affect on your life. unless you allow it to.". people don't choose how they want to feel all the time. i'm not choosing to be angry, i just AM angry, but i would at least be a little less angry if other people agreed with me and didn't just let jhonens ableism slide. I've been hyperfixated on this comic for probably a year now and it's caused me almost nothing but stress. if i could just turn that off i would, but i can't. the least i can do is try to get people to stop just accepting everything this shitty comics creator says and does. i was drawn towards this comic when i read it for the first time because i thought that it was just self-indulgent revenge fantasy stuff, which is the type of stuff that i like. i thought this comic was trying to empathize with people who have homicidal thoughts and give them a safe, non-harmful, self-indulgent, and non-judgmental piece of art for them to use to their liking. at first i viewed this comic the way people view violent FPS games, i viewed this comic like a vent post, i viewed johnny the way 2010s teenagers viewed jeff the killer, and for those reasons i had liked it at first. i thought this comic was on my side. but when i read into this comic and when i looked into the words of it's creator more that's when everything went downhill for me. it feels like this comic cheated on me. it seems like nobody who has read this comic, whether they're a normal casual fan or a more dedicated fan like you, cares about any of this because these people either didn't understand the point of this comic OR they did understand but they agree with its messages and implications so it doesn't bother them. it SHOULD bother all of you.
Oh gawd, were really comparing a dark humored comic from the 90s to the dragon slayer. An online horse web comic, very VERY loosely based on the greek myth of Percy, posted last year-ish online.
denied that multiple characters were SA-ed.
Made a comment joke about “he bit the butt” in the middle of an incest attempt rape scene.
A dad of the main character jokingly named their kid “pierces”. Because his dick pierced her mother. (said mother who was in the attempted incestuous SA earlier. And this is 20 pages into the comic.)
author complained that people wanted proper trigger warnings. (note that author made kid friendly content for years right before this dark topic jump in the pool.) (at least Jhonen fucking cringes when he hears kids got into JTHM after seeing invader Zim.)
this comic on average has a talk/ threat/ or attempted SA scene every 12-ish pages.
Author dismissed criticism multiple times. Including hiding comments noting that the jokes weren’t funny. Ran from one website to another to complain about said commentators.
The difference is JTHM, doesn't deny when a character is SA-ed. About 99% of the time its not to be taken seriously. Meanwhile the dragon slayer WAS trying to take itself seriously. May as well complain about the scary movie franchise not being like a P.S.A.
“Jhonen didn't make JTHM just because he felt like it, he didn't choose to make this comic about a mentally unwell murderer just because he liked that idea for no particular reason.”
He did though. JTHM was first made when he was a high schooler, and published the books at 19yo and up across some years. Meanwhile, the dragon slayer was made by a late 20’s to early 30s women online.
No one has to agree with you. I’m certainly not going to agree with you. Calling me and everyone else in this fandom stupid isn't going to get you anywhere either. People like the books for various reasons. Stop reading the comic, stop looking into Jhonen. You don’t like it. Move on to something that makes you happy. YOU choose to come into my asks and rant. No ones reading JTHM or what Jhonen saying and going “yes, lets absolutely hate the mentally ill.”
YOU had an idea what JTHM was, when it wasn't that at all.
The rug can't be pulled out from under you after an assumption on YOUR part. A lot of people like it because its fucked up and stupid. A lot of people find comfort in the fucked up and stupid Johnny C. I don’t know how many ways I can explain that people aren’t taking a dark humored comic involving aliens, eldritch horrors, a psycho with a 50+ floored house, seriously.
Clearly this isn't your space, not your kind of people, leave us clearly stupid people alone.
