What if Luigi, for whatever reason, did not realize that Daisy is also a princess like Peach when they first met?? (There could be any reason for this, maybe no one thought to mention it; I feel like Luigi’s the type to be accidentally left out on important information like that)
And he’s talking to Mario later like “wow that woman is so crazy and beautiful and gosh she intimidates me but I kind of like it??” and both the bros are useless, hopeless romantics who need some love in their lives so of course Mario is like “go for it!”
So Luigi attempts to win Daisy over the only way he knows how– subtle flirting with nicknames. Because he’s classy, not brash.
“Princess.” Or, the Italian, “Principessa.” (which sounds similar enough)
So the next time he sees Daisy, he lays that nickname on as much as he can. Lathers it to the end of every sentence, every compliment, even begins to address her purely as Princess and not even with her name, because she is the sole ruler of his heart. He’s head over heels for her. She makes those butterflies bloom in his belly unlike any woman he’s ever met before.
But for some reason, his nicknames aren’t getting through to her?? She doesn’t appear to react to his nicknames at all, though she is interested in the Italian word. She’s so fascinated by his first language. But his attempts to flirt with her don’t seem to be getting anywhere. Granted, he is very nervous and a little clumsy, but surely she notices how he won’t call her anything but Princess??
He comes back to Mario later after overthinking way too much, dejected, thinking maybe she did understand and she was ignoring his nicknames on purpose.
But as soon as he admits to Mario what his methods were, it takes every ounce of Mario’s self control not to burst out into a fit of laughter because his poor little brother was addressing a Princess by her own title in an attempt to flirt with her. That shit’s adorable. Of course, Mario’s a good big brother and he won’t tell anyone about this, but he can barely maintain his composure long enough to explain why it wasn’t working.
Once Luigi does understand, they both lose it and start laughing. Luigi’s so silly. He’s gonna have to find a better nickname, but luckily, there’s no shortage of Italian endearments he can use.
