I was actually pretty excited when I first saw this post. Wow! Mute representation in a video game I adore?? I can’t believe I never found out about this! Let me learn more! And I go to look it up and…not a single goddamn thing where this is said. Not an article, not a wiki page, nothing. Google brought up absolutely zero sources on this. Nothing about magical sign language, nothing about canon muteness, absolutely nothing.

Headcanons are great. But don’t give false hope for representation by claiming something is canon, okay?

I'm going to throw in my two cents because I can. I'm about 40% deaf in both of my ears and I feel like people like to lump together the deaf and mute because they're both communication blocks, w/e. But it gets super frustrating when people get annoyed at you and sometimes don't even bother trying to communicate with you because you can't do something they see as simple as hearing/talking. So having such an iconic character with those same problems really makes me feel nice. And I really fucking hate it when people tell me

Well I'm so glad you think so. Because it seems so stupid to you to have a character who's mute or deaf because it seems so weird. But I get to live it. I don't get to turn my senses up and down. My ears don't work right. And the fact Link has to use sign language to communicate makes me feel like I'm not alone in the frustration and that people will have to pay attention to me at some point. It's sappy, but idc.
