serra balikçi / open starter. the rattlesnake bar.
there to indulge in a little liquour and reckless decisions, serra couldn't help but encourage those around her to do the same. particularly where the alcohol came into play. multiple shots lined up firmly upon the bar before her, one in hand with a couple free for any takers. "free shots." the brunette called out, hoping that she wouldn't have to pick up the slack for those in her close proximity. "help a girl out."
typically, the tattoo artist wasn't one to encourage small talk, so this was one way to avoid such tactics that other patrons usually pulled when they were bored or after a specific ending to their evening. instead, she took it upon herself to numb the surface, hindering inhibitions, it made for far more interesting conversations. perhaps even a secret or too.
"i don't bite..." further encouragement as eyes glanced at her onlookers. "only a little nibble from time to time." of course messing, but couldn't help herself.
ciara had claimed a quiet corner of the bar, just far enough from the crowd to breathe. her drink sat untouched for a moment as she watched the room, letting the noise wash over her instead of through her. long shift, longer day. she finally picked it up, taking a slow sip, shoulders easing just a fraction, until the comment caught her attention.
her gaze slid over, a flicker of dry amusement breaking through the fatigue as she lifted her glass slightly. “good to know,” she said, voice a little rough around the edges from disuse. “i’ve had a long shift, don’t think i’ve got the energy to fend off anything more than a nibble.” a small pause, then a faint, tired smirk. “depends though… you offering, or just making promises?”
setting: redford hospital who: open
the er had that steady kind of chaos, phones ringing, monitors beeping, voices overlapping just enough to blur together. ciara moved through it like second nature, chart tucked under her arm, eyes scanning as she stepped into the waiting area. that’s when she noticed them, something in the way they were sitting, tense, out of place, like they weren’t sure if they should even be there.
she slowed her pace, shifting her attention fully as she approached. “hey,” she said, voice calm but direct, stopping just in front of them. “you okay? do you need help, or are you waiting on someone?”
tessa's visits to the southern strand saloon were few and far between these days. it wasn't because she didn't love the place. she did. it was one of her favorite haunts, but... life and, well, motherhood, had kept her busy.
it was funny— tessa had thought that as trevor grew up, he'd somehow need her less, and it may have been true if it weren't for the sneaking out and skipping school. the unending rebellious streak that had taken root in her son. everything was a fight. frankly, tess wanted to pull her hair out.
but instead, she'd settled for a drink.
"unless you speak teenage boy, i'm 'fraid not," tess replied on an exasperated sigh, sliding into the booth beside adelaide. her gaze swept over the women, picking up the subtle tension carried on her face, only detectable from knowing someone their entire life. "what about you? anything i can help with?"
at least the company settling in beside her was one she welcomed. always had been. tess wasn’t just a familiar face, she was the closest thing adelaide had to a sister, to family. and right now, with everything weighing on her, that counted for more than she could put into words.
her lips pressed together at tess’s words, a faint shake of her head following as she let out a quiet breath. “now that, i can’t help ya with,” she said softly, a hint of a drawl slipping through. “teenage boys? whole different language.”
her gaze lingered on her for a moment, something thoughtful passing behind her eyes before it faded. truth was, she couldn’t help but wonder sometimes, what it’d be like to have that kind of family. but that meant letting someone in close enough to build it, and that… wasn’t something she’d quite figured out.
she shifted slightly in her seat, brushing the thought aside. “i was thinkin’, though… maybe we oughta host somethin’,” she added, tone a touch lighter now. “don’t rightly know what yet, but feels like it might do some good.” her brow lifted faintly. “anythin’ come to mind for ya?”
closed starter: jett + adelaide / @redfordmuses
location: decker's ranch
he hadn't meant to go digging. truth was, he'd been looking for something else entirely when he came across it - tucked in the back of a drawer in the old office, buried under paperwork no one had touched in years. it stopped him cold. he turned the ring over in his hand, thumb dragging along the band, worn smooth by years of use. it just sat there, heavy in a way that had nothing to do with weight. jett found adelaide in the hallway not long after, closing the distance without much thought "found this in the office" he said, didn't dress it up or soften it, just held it out between them "it was yer father's. figured ya'd want to keep it"
she still called decker ranch home. even after her father passed, she stayed, held onto it as long as she could. until she was told to leave. she was on her way out, headed for the saloon, boots quiet against the hallway floor when she spotted her uncle stepping out of the old office. her gaze dropped almost immediately to what he held, something small, familiar. “oh… is that” her chest tightened before she could finish. the memory of that last night with her father came rushing back, uninvited. her hand lifted, reaching for the ring like it might anchor her. “it’s hard to believe he’s gone,” she murmured, voice softer now, like saying it too loud might make it real.
setting: southern strand saloon who: open
adelaide sat in her usual booth, the one that let her see everything without really being seen. it was routine at this point, watching people, keeping to herself, staying just out of reach. her mind had been restless since the fair, thoughts looping back to that moment with sebastian no matter how much she tried to push it away. it lingered in a way she didn’t like, settling under her skin, making it hard to focus on anything else. she needed a distraction, something to quiet it, even for a little while.
her fingers wrapped around her glass, lifting it as she took a slow sip of her southern drink, letting the burn sit for a second before swallowing. it didn’t do much, but it was something. her gaze drifted across the room, unfocused, until the shift beside her pulled her out of it.
someone slid into the booth without asking, like they belonged there. she didn’t move right away, just turned her head slightly, eyes narrowing a fraction as she looked them over.
“can i help you?”
lorenzo moretti / open starter. the guilded room night club.
rodeo's weren't exactly lorenzo's thing, alas, he briefly attended the annual shindig that lured so many to it's confines. depending on how you looked at it, the night was, eventful nonetheless. an onlooker to the burning chaos that ensued, mind pondering immediately as to who had sparked such situations. both figuratively, and literally, that is. regardless, enzo was quick to return to the comfortability of his night club, for some respite.
was it normal to spend the night at your place of business? probably not, but this man took great pride in the reputation of the club, and the moretti name. so, if that meant the manager took refuge on the sofa in his office from time to time? then so be it. this morning was one of those occasions, of course, getting caught up in the excitement from the evening prior.
"we're not open for another hour." the man called out, noticing the pitter patter of some footprints approaching the bar that he was currently stocking ahead of the evening rush. "so, what can i do you for?" he later questioned, wondering if this was business or pleasure.
ciara lingered by the entrance for a moment, taking in the quiet before the place had a chance to fill. it wasn’t her usual stop on the way home, but there was a pull to try something different tonight. it was a calmer kind of quiet than the er, unfamiliar, but not unwelcome.
she paused at his voice, glancing toward the bar before stepping closer.
“i just got off shift.” a small breath out. “was hoping for a drink before heading home.”
setting: the redford rodeo & fair when: during the fire who: @ofembcrs
adelaide was too damn close to the start of it for comfort. the second the crowd realized what was happening, everything went sideways, people shoving, rushing, no sense of direction. she got pushed hard, sent back into a tent where the canvas dipped and dragged her with it, knocking her off balance.
“help!” her voice cut through the noise, sharp with urgency.
he laughed, a short, harsh sound that lacked any real amusement. “that’s what this is about? you’re upset because i listened to you?”
sebastian looked at her then, really looked. the rapidly disappearing donuts, the way her gaze was a moving target. it was all a diversion, a way to distract from the sincerity of her words.
their lapse of communication had been mutual, his choice to step aside and respect her decision no less of a choice than hers. “you didn’t leave me with anything to fight for.” he knew it was a lie as the words left his mouth.
then her expression shifted and it was as if a door closed. “careful, someone might get the idea you care.”
damn right she was upset that he’d listened to her. that he hadn’t bothered to read between the lines. any sane, halfway functional person would’ve just said what they needed, but that had never been adelaide. “yeah. i am.”
it wasn’t surprising, the way they’d fallen apart, neither of them ever quite saying what needed to be said. she’d tried, in her own way. met him somewhere in the middle… or at least where she thought it was. his words hit harder than she expected. “good to know that’s all you thought we were.” part of her wished she’d had it in her to fight for it, to not let it slip that easy.
“maybe i’m just warnin’ the next one.” another donut disappeared between her lips.
"i'm not even sure yet. i came in here with no master plan." which was fairly usual for her. "i figured it might all depend who i run into and whatnot." sipping her sweet tea she momentarily checked in on the action again. "how're you findin' the bull ridin'?"
“that’s the best way to do it.” going in with expectations usually ended in disappointment. her gaze dipped briefly to what her cousin was drinking. “you planning on switching to something stronger later?” ciara had the next couple days off, might as well let herself loosen up a bit. “it’s entertaining. i like the barrel racing.”
every single year the annual rodeo seemed to come around faster than it did the year before. and every single year, he never had the chance to actually do any of things that he'd told himself he'd do during the event. probably because he felt like he was still working, since this was sponsored by them.
"geeze," he replied, as his eyes moved down towards the oversized bag, "you plannin’ on feedin’ the whole damn rodeo or just yourself?" he asked as he stepped besides her, close enough to steal one without asking, because he never does when it comes to his siblings and food. "you ever pair this with whiskey?" he asked as he wiped off the powder on his fingers on his jeans, "tastes better than that fried chicken." he admitted, as he nodded towards another food stand.
her nose scrunched and her eyes rolled at the comment about the size of her bag. adelaide wasn’t one to judge how anyone chose to indulge, but that didn’t mean she had to share. her elbow nudged into his side the second her brother stepped in close, already knowing exactly what he was about to do.
she shot him a look that said she’d seen it coming. “there’s a few things i don’t share, cash, and this right here’s one of ‘em.” a beat, a hint of a smile pulling at her lips. “you’re lucky you’re family, or i’d have you laid out flat.”
that smile turned sweeter, just to sell it. “really?"
“but if i did, i know i wouldn’t false start.” seb offered a crooked grin so she’d know he was joking.
her name explained the vague recognition, a trip to the emergency room with one of the rookies coming to mind. “you treated one of my rookies for smoke inhalation.”
enjoying was relative. “what’s not to love about bulls and lassos?” for all intents and purposes, he was having a great time. he’d seen his ex, suffered through a brisket sandwich that had lost its taste, and now was watching grown men be flung around by cattle. “my mother used to bring me to these for the barrel racing,” he redirected, looking over at her. “how about you?”
“you think it’s that easy?” ciara had been on a horse before, but there wasn’t enough money in the world to get her on a bull. she’d heard enough stories from the ones who did, knew exactly how quickly things could go wrong. it was enough to keep her far away from it.
“i do remember that.” a lot of people from town passed through the er, and she did what she could for each of them. “how is he doing?”
ciara let out a quiet laugh. “what exactly brought you out here? i’m starting to think this isn’t your scene.” she’d grown up around it, knew it well enough. “the barrel racing’s my favorite.” a brief pause. “it’s nice, though… seeing the town be civil for once.” the tension was hard to ignore otherwise.
savannah had been in mid-thought, eyes lazer focused on the bull riding event that was just about to start. normally, the loud and large crowds that came with the fair and rodeo would have made her leave by now. luckily, with the help of a much needed smoke break and booze, her social battery wasn't totally drained.
munching on some loaded fries, she hears a familar face and shakes her head. "oh no, i was just sittin' here by my lonesome self," she told ciara. "the hospital gave you enough grace to be able to spend the day here?"
it didn’t take long for ciara to recognize who was beside her by the sound of their voice. she’d spent enough time working alongside savannah in the er. she’d worked hard to earn her place at the hospital, her family name might’ve opened doors, but she made sure she deserved to be there. time off was never an issue for her, not that she ever took much of it.
“it’s been three weeks since i’ve had any time off. i was told to enjoy myself.” three days in a row felt unfamiliar. “looks like you managed to get the night off too.”
as a chef, venturing anywhere near the food trucks and vendors could be an absolute nightmare. in most cases rylee was often pleasantly surprised but fairs were much different. if this wasn't such a hit on nostalgia from her childhood then her insides might have been screaming.
with a little smile cropping up on her lips the blonde shook her head just so slightly. "there's enough sugar in this sweet tea to send me into a days long sugar high... adding that," head dipping to indicate the bag of mini donuts covered in powdered sugar, "could put me in a coma."
there was no judgement, rylee understood indulgence maybe more than most. she'd gotten herself into enough hot water because of it. "do they sell 'em as a single because i could do that... or at least a bite."
there weren’t many sweet things that ever really tempted adelaide. but this was one of ‘em. once a year, and she wasn’t about to feel bad for it. “there’s worse things than bein’ put in a sugar coma for a day.”
she gave a small shrug. her gaze dropped to the oversized bag of donuts in her hands. sharing had never exactly been her strong suit, but she also knew she wasn’t fixin’ to eat all thirty on her own. her brothers were bound to show up sooner or later anyway.
she held the bag out slightly. “you want one, or you just gonna keep talkin’ about ‘em?”
sebastian stopped in his tracks, wheeling on the heel of his boots to face her. he didn’t bother to disguise the way his brows furrowed, couldn’t even muster the thought to try.
“you can’t put that on me.” she was many things, but indecisive wasn’t one of them. she’d been very clear about what she wanted when she ended things, and for once, he’d listened. he understood it. her father had died, she needed to put her family first, and that meant cutting him out. he didn’t belong in her life; plain and simple. “not when i stayed away because you told me to.”
he took a step towards her. “you ended things, addie.” the slip steadied him, and his voice dropped on instinct. if their relationship had existed in shadow, there was no need to draw attention to it now. “don’t blame me for not being a mind reader.”
he had a point. adelaide couldn’t put that on him, and yet, she did. everything in her life had flipped upside down, and pushing him away had been her way of keeping him safe. keeping him from seeing her fall apart. didn’t change the fact she’d wanted him there anyway.
“since when have you ever listened to me in the first place?” her voice dropped, low enough not to draw attention. she popped another mini donut into her mouth, like this was just another easy, passing conversation.
“you didn’t even fight for it.” it didn’t matter that he’d done exactly what she asked, that he’d given her space. there was still a part of her that hated the quiet that followed, hated not having him there, not having the way he grounded her.
a moment passed before she looked off, letting whatever flickered in her eyes settle before finding him again. “maybe you’ll find some… pretty little thing to take home tonight.” a small pause. “seems more your speed.”
