Bottles under the bed, the smell of alcohol in the air. The aftermath of a party or the distant memory? Both. Both is right. Her head spins as she stares at that bottle, the culprit who broke a vow. He lays there on the floor, and one more in the hand. He stares at her, tells her that she couldnât do it. She knew that, but it hurts to hear.
She canât feel the pain of it anymore as she screws the cap back on and drops the half empty bottle to her bedside. Someone speaks, says that they are leaving. Again sheâs alone.
Alone.
She likes it that way, less stress. Sheâs happy. Music fills the room, and her heart canât be heard thumping over the sound of the piano and guitar. One beer got her here. One simple drink, one sip of something that doesnât even taste like itâs safe to drink. It crushed the ideal.
Sheâs happier this way, smiling even, as she sings along to the words that play over the speaker of her phone--just loud enough for her room to hear.
âNow you're free to be the lonely life of the party. Go, you'll see, but let's get one thing straight. You're gonna regret you left me.â
Dare: Spidey was too easy, time to really test this feline. Seduce MJ ;)
The surprise passes her , grin already grazing her features as her emerald hues glance towards the red â head . â YOU KNOW , MISS MARY JANE , YOU & I WOULD MAKE AN PURR â FECT COUPLE , DON â T YOU THINK ? â She easily fakes the innocents in her tone . â You , me , a little get away to an island or fancy hotel , can â t you just picture it ? â It isn â t the first time the feline has teased the red â head / but it is the first time there is a motive there : & perhaps just a hint of curiosity . // @redhotxredhead
Now Mary Jane was not above playing along, but certainly she hadnât been expecting that. She blinked, green eyes scanning for any inkling of falsity in the words. âW-what a tease Felicia.â Her teeth bite into her lip, because now she is thinking about it--and what if she was serious? âIs it too late to claim you during spring break?â

Sorry I havenât had a chance to post, Iâve been working a lot more hours. Iâm taking a hiatus since Iâll be overworked (apparently) and out of town for the next week. I am completely willing to still do things on discord while Iâm away, but keeping up with the dash is just a little too much for my very short bursts of time at home!
Iâll be back on the dash in the new year!! (maybe slightly before that, but I wounât be back from my trip till New Yearâs Eve.)
A Drop in the Ocean | Self Para
Mary Jane was nothing like that, wouldnât cave in or do what others asked. No, but she would do what she wanted, and what she wanted was to lose herself. She didnât want to feel, or think, or exist. She just wanted to float. To imagine that for some small moment of time she was less of a friend to others and more of a wave in the ocean. Gentle, ebbing, free.
One pill turned to two and after a while she began drinking. The liquid burned--she didnât bother asking what it was. Anything was better than beer or water. Even wine didnât make her feel better anymore. This was thicker, warmer. Maybe it was hot. She rolled up the end of her top, cropping it with a spare hair tie from her wrist.
A slower song started, still think with the harsh beat. Mary Jane made her way to the living room that had been cleared so the floor could be used for dancing. She was an hour away from Annaâs house, somewhere she wouldnât be found. Unfamiliar faces, unknown names. A relief from everyone asking how she was doing. Her hips swayed and caught each heavy beat with a breath.
I donât want to waste a weekend
Hands caught her waist. She was numb. The hands wouldnât last long when they realized she wasnât listening, wasnât paying attention. They would leave her, let her alone in the center of the floor where bodies meshed and banged against each other frequently like bumper cars. For now though, the heat of hands was welcomed--appreciated even.
If you donât love me, pretend
Her body was smooth and she knew she smelt of cinnamon and the whiskey on her tongue made each breath she took more intoxicating. She needed another drink. When the hands disappeared, pulled away by another girl who gave attention and promises of fruity vodka kisses in the back hall Mary Jane took the chance to sway away from the crowd to the bar in the kitchen. Bottles passed through her grasp as she mined for gold. Jackpot. Whiskey washed over cubes of ice, cracking and clanging in the plastic cup. It wasnât long before that glass was gone and another was being poured. She must have looked like a person with a problem--with a past.
Misplaced trust, old friends
Her phone buzzed. She assumed it would be Anna, asking when sheâd be home, pleading for Mary Jane to call her just once that night. She wouldnât call, but sheâd text. Sheâd say she was fine, just studying at so-and-soâs house. Tell her not to wait up because they had a big test. No-- the name on the screen flashed through her mind and in her drunken haze she nearly picked up--nearly.
âPeter...â She mumbled, whiskey sloshing around in her glass as she allowed her phone to continue vibrating in her hand. Her feet were carrying her out the patio door, off to a less crowded porch where her only company was the night sky and the few scattered remnants of furious make out sessions that usually wound up back in the house.
I was praying that you and me might end up together
For the first time in months Mary Jane opened the message, listened to his voice, and numbly closed it out. She stared down his name as if heâd just show up and take her home, drive her back to her bed where sheâd be safe from harm. Silly. She opened her texts, swiped through names until she came to the one she wanted.
Two rings was all it took to get the voice from the other end.
âHarry--â he knew, always did, and as her voice broke over the receiver she wondered if she ever should have told him. â--need you.â It was a shattered sentence, but she knew heâd show up. Heâd make the trip a thousand times if she asked.
Her bare legs hit the cool wood of the porch and she sat there, waiting it out. With Harry she wouldnât have to explain and with Peter there would be too much to say. She could hear him asking where sheâd been, why she wasnât answering, if she hated him. She couldnât take the pressure. She loved him, had loved him, and possibly still loved him. Of that she wasnât certain. She wanted to let him go almost felt like she would need to in order to move on.
Every time she almost forgot how he made her felt he would call, and all over again sheâd fall for him.
Like clockwork.

28. A memory that strains a relationship
Hands clutch her cell phone tight, gripping it and hoping that it will shatter in her hands. Sheâs too weak, always weak. She wants to throw it, watch the screen crack and later fall to pieces as she gathers is from the floor. She doesnât. Sheâd just disappoint Anna. Thatâs the last thing she wants to do. Sheâs pissed. Peter calls again and she ignores it. She watches as each ring takes him closer to voicemail. Again he leaves a message, and again she listens to his voice breaking. This one is different, he sounds like heâs done with her. Done trying.
She wishes she didnât care, but she does.
For a moment she wants to call him back and the alcohol in her system drives her to do it. Pick up the phone Mary Jane. Heâs the first contact in your list. Call him. Tell him how sorry you are. Say goodbye.
The voices in her head have driven her to this before. She takes a long drink from the bottle at her bedside. She canât tell him about this, and she knows heâd ask. Sheâd feel obligated. His voice would make her leave her room and meet him at their spot. From there she knows that the look in his eyes would make her unfurl. Sheâd tell him everything. The drugs, the drinking, the pain. She couldnât do that to him.
So she drank the last of the bottle and hid it under her bed before laying down and watching the stupid plastic stars twinkle on her ceiling.

19. A memory of someone they donât see anymoreÂ
âAunt Anna--â Mary Janeâs voice echoed through the house, shaking the curios that sat on her desk. She stood in front of the full length mirror, dress held up at her chest.
It didnât take long before Anna was standing in the doorway of her nieceâs room, worry knitting her brows. âMary Jane--?â She took one look, and realized that the girl was okay, was safe. She sighed with relief.
âI canât get it zipped.â Mary Jane watched her auntâs reflection move, ending behind her. School dances werenât really her thing, but her friends had insisted on them all going. Or rather, Gwen had insisted. Mary Jane couldnât be bothered with the thought. âThanks.â
Annaâs smile brought a little light into the room, taking MJ into her arms and squeezing her tight. âYou look just like your mother.â
Aside from the red hair MJ could only agree, but still a pang of sadness shot through her heart like a bullet. âCan you...help me with my hair?â
âOf course.â Anna knew that it was something she had to do, for both of them, all of them. Her sister would have wanted to be doing it herself, but instead life had other plans. Life always had other plans.
âI love you.â
âI love you too Mary Jane.â
