The Living Tombstone – Webster Hall – October 7, 2025

The Living Tombstone began as a solo project for Yoav Landau to make remixes of songs from My Little Pony and then producing songs for video games. He moved to NYC nearly a decade ago and teamed up with singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Haft. Together, the electronic duo has continued making video-game music while also putting out original work, like their second LP, Rust, which brought them to a sold-out Webster Hall on Tuesday night.

Hi Sam! I saw you guys in Boston earlier this week and it was awesome! It was great watching you guys play and also just mess around on stage, and I appreciated the shoutouts you gave to the rest of the crew. You all really seemed to be having fun, so I hope that was the case and the tour run hasn’t been too hard on you all!

I gotta ask…how well can you guys see in the costumes?? Are the others basically playing their instruments blind? I assume you and Yoav must be able to see through the light display or have cameras?

(P.S. If you saw someone with a homemade Rust helmet that was probably me)

Lmao honestly we can’t see at all - we see through small eye holes, through dark tinted glass. It’s a miracle we can perform!

Can we get any insight on some of the themes that might appear in the upcoming Rust album? I’m really interested in the character as a whole and I’d love to hear about some underlying messages within the songs that align with the character! I know that there’s some reference to fascism here and there, anything else you can share? Thank you!!!! (I’m super excited to hear what you and Yoav have been cooking up)

Absolutely! I think it’s best described by contrasting it to zero_one, as I think of them as foils for each other, just as the characters are:

zero_one is a character that represents change and personal evolution. zero_one was very much an inward-facing album about self-actualization and its opposing forces, i.e. the obstacles in one’s own life (and in some cases in one’s own psyche) that prevent it. It is framed - with regards to canon - as a semi-concept album, around a person’s growth into the person they would become thru the lens of being ‘chosen’ to be zero_one.

Rust is the reverse! Rust is a character that represents rebellion and uncompromising principles. So Rust is an outward-facing album about society and social issues, particularly those around how fascism takes root, drives people mad, and numbs them to horror. It is similarly framed as a semi-concept album, about an authoritarian dystopia into which Rust’s message of revolt and hope takes hold.

I’m SO proud of this record, it’s very personal and in so many ways an expression of a sort of anger - and grief! - that I feel deeply inadequate at processing outside of art. It’s some of our most sophisticated work yet and Yoav has poured a tremendous amount of musical genius into it.
