:D loved the map and all the voices!! however, armstrong confused me a bit, why'd they speak at the very end? i thought y'all confirmed them as mute?
Hi! Glad you asked! I posted about it on the TLT server and I’ll drop that here:
I’d reinforce that in no way are we trying to make implications around human beings who are mute or nonverbal in the way Armstrong vocalizes, but for Armstrong as someone ‘piloting a corpse’, our solution to having them feel present and player-facing was this idea around expelling air from their body as their limited form of vocalization. In a more visual medium like a cartoon, we may have gone in a different direction - like, for example, gestures or something like ASL - but with the limitations around a dialogue box driven narrative, it seemed important to figure out how Armstrong could make sound!
All that said, Armstrong is not ‘speaking’ in that last line - like all of Armstrong’s lines, it’s an unvoiced expulsion of air, without the use of pronunciation anatomy. It’s just that a “yay”-ish sound is possible with those biological limitations, it only relies on moving air and opening and closing one’s jaw!
Thanks for asking - definitely not a retcon on Armstrong’s corpsey limitations around communication, just a way to explore the very specific circumstances around muteness that Armstrong has, sonically. I totally appreciate the ways in which Armstrong can serve as representation for folks with aphasia, vocal injury, nonverbal conditions, etc, and it was really a decision stemming from not wanting the game’s limitations to make Armstrong completely non-communicative, because we love our big red fella and wanted them as much a part of this experience as everyone else.
