your art style reminds me of almost 1900-1930's era halloween cards and such, it's almost logographic (might be the wrong word) the way the shape language is used. do you have any tips about this? I tried to entirely alter my art style long ago in favor of some of these elements and failed :V

thank you! i suppose my biggest tip would be to think about balance and simplification.

balance is tricky for me to explain, since it's something that i've just kind of gotten the hang of. i try to fill in space (or leave it blank) intentionally, giving the eye a lot of places to move around the drawing. this is easier to see/do with characters that have a lot of bits hanging off or things that i can mess around with, like billy or ivy. think about tangents, think about the invisible lines of action.

something else that takes work is simplifying characters or exaggerating aspects to make them read easily. they may not be accurate to the actual design but in context of the piece (knowing the character, knowing what things 'generally' look like) they work. you can easily go too far with this which can either be fun or a disaster. this honestly comes down to how you choose to draw things, how you see aspects of the world and want to translate that to other people.

observe the goat: the horns are not anywhere near what they look like in game. i've exaggerated their individual lengths to fill in the space behind the collar in a pleasing way, leaving little negative space. all of the nails in his horns + the bat are also somehow positioned so you get the whole 'nail' shape. this is all meant to just be read, not thought about. characterization sometimes plays in too. this in your face, cluttered look is very "billy".

stylization takes a lot of practice and is a hard thing to measure anyway. i think what's most important is being able to recognize what you like in others' work and what you want to do. not only goals wise, but what part of the process you enjoy most and feel most confident in. if you focus on that you'll find yourself happier with your style sooner

thank you :D there's too many to name, but i think some artists that i draw pretty directly from are illustrators like trina hyman and leo + diane dillon. natalya bukanova has also been a big favorite for awhile... and andrew maclean's headlopper... and goran gligovic... and so many more...

i also look at a lot of painting and design for theater, opera sets, puppetry, etc.

hi hi, ive never sent an ask to anyone ever but i have to tell you that i love your art so so so much. the dark lines are so cool and i get excited when i see another character youve drawn. the drifter doodles are so perpetually ingrained into my eyes that i see them when i play deadlock now anyway you dont have to respond to this or anything i just wanted to tell you haha thank you for posting your cool works
