It’s a funny question, all things considered. As if Jason could be replaced. As if the mantle was a gift. As if this young brilliant boy didn’t barrel into his life knowing who he was and what he stood for all on his own. 

It’s a childish question. 

     [ ₁ ] A child’s question. 

And he hears it clearly in his voice. The slight tremble. The uncertainty in his chest. And he looks down at him again for a minute. 12 seconds to be exactly. And then back out onto the streets. 

“ No. “ He answered firmly, resolutely, coming to the conclusion himself that it needed to be said. “ You’re not Dick. You’re not Jason. But you are robin. “ 

A light clasp of his shoulder. 

“ You saved me, son. Or did you forget that already? “

Oh shit-- he actually heard that. Tim cleared his throat nervously. Was it the pain meds making him dizzy or did he suddenly feel like fleeing. It wasn't until Bruce his hand on his shoulder when he felt reassured. He sighed, before softly smiling.

"I wouldn't say 'saving'." Even though he technically did. Bruce was a mess after Jason and he needed a Robin to keep him from spiraling down even further. But he didn't want to pour salt on the wound. "I just stirred you in the right direction."

“ You’re brooding. “ He repeats, stepping up to where he hovered near a ledge to sit down as well and get comfortably. Too hunched figures overlooking a city finally on it’s way to sleep. The quiet again before the storm. Or the reprieve from the after.

The events of that day replayed in his head. He woke up from the beating Jason gave him and he couldn't shake off the words the previous Boy Wonder said to him. It made him wonder if he could-- SHOULD-- continue being a hero. Recovery was slow, and hard, considering he leaped back into action. He learned to ignore the side effects of the strong pain meds given to him by Alfred.

'Is it true? Am I a replacement?' he said, to himself. He didn't want Bruce to think he was incapable of doing his job. The question festered in his brain, sowing seeds of self doubt.

He sighed.

"I'm just exhausted."

I will be online for like 30mins. I’m going to slowly introduce rping so I don’t burn out like always. I’m still recovering from food poisoning (I drank orange juice and my stomach is messed up again) so I’m trying not to overload my brain with too much.
