How is feminism still relevant in the western world?

I sometimes see current feminism as a movement which has already achieved euqality of opportunity between women and men, and is now currently fighting for continued relevance. I don’t understand why people continue to identify themselves as part of a movement which seems to be irrelevant in many parts of the world today. In short, can you please let me know how feminism is still relevant in today’s western society? Cheers!

Hey, I’m not sure if you are trying to dub feminism or are just genuinely curious, but here is some reasons (& statistics) of the main reasons that came to mind. Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year. Feminism is about women supporting other women, and highlighting rape awareness. Of course, as highlighted above, rape is something that happens to men as well. That can not be ignored, but women are 7 times more likely to be raped by me. 1 in 5 women aged 16 - 59 has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16. Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police. This means that there are probably way more than 85,000 women raped per year- and equally more men, but this is starting to become a significant figure, don’t you think? A third of people believe women who flirt are partially responsible for being raped. (Above statistics from: http://rapecrisis.org.uk/statistics.php). There are literal websites, and hate groups, that hate on women for having abortion. Feminism is there to support them. An example: http://www.tfpstudentaction.org/politically-incorrect/abortion/10-reasons-why-abortion-is-evil.html Domestic abuse will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime. That makes 35 women per 100 (and 16 men per 100). The statistics for men is still high, we acknowledge that. Feminism is about equality, right? Therefore, western feminism wants to decrease that percentage until it’s at least as low as the male percentage. This leads to, on average, two women being murdered each week and 30 men per year. That means 104 women are murdered per year, because of domestic abuse. (Statistics above are from http://www.lwa.org.uk/understanding-abuse/statistics.htm ) I hope that is enough to sort of help you understand what western feminism is for. Of course, it is no where as necessary as eastern feminism (which is why many people are intersectional feminists). However, these issues still need to be highlighted, don’t you think? Hey @lonelydaydreamer, thanks for responding. I’m just curious about feminism at this point. Yes, sexual assault and sexual violence is an issue in current society, and we should do everything in our power as members of our society to reduce these crimes to the smallest number possible (preferably 0, though I somewhat pessimistically assume that it is impossible). Sorry for seeming a bit daft, but what does this have to do with feminism? What are feminists doing to ensure that the number of sexual assault and violence is reduced in the western world?

Many people, like your rebloggers think that it’s pointless. I’m sure it’s a matter of opinion, but I’d like to think that it is not. Well, firstly there’s the obvious point that they point out what is unequal (and quite often complain or ramble about it). Although you may not see this as useful, it does bring awareness to issues. Secondly, I don’t think there has to be a reason. It’s a movement made by women to support other women. If a woman sees someone, declared a feminist, (who is not radical) she can ask them for help and support and know that she will receive it. Most importantly, I think, is the fundraising and the rallies. Personally, I tend to stick to the fundraising because it’s easier to do when I’m in school. I fundraise for hostels for women who have fled domestic abuse, rape awareness companies, binder charities (for trans boys and non-binary people). One of my favourite charities is for an all girls school within the Middle East, because western feminists can still support middle eastern rights. Western feminists can also, at risk of being arrested, protest inside some radical countries in the east for women’s rights. Places where women are not allowed to drive or go to school. However, when you begin to do things like that you risk becoming a political prisoner. I think, personally, that all of the above are valid. I don’t think you could ever say the movement as a whole is useless. @redundanttautology
