In praise of noisy Australians

Being a good citizen is not the same as being a compliant one.

To stay silent while our country is incinerated, people are killed and houses are lost cannot be justified.

If anything deserves to be called unAustralian, that does.

The internet is also a hotbed of angry debate. This constant noise can be annoying, even unsettling, and sometimes downright intimidating, but make no mistake, the desire by those in power for a “quiet” citizenry is an authoritarian impulse.

“Noisy” Australians don’t just criticise those in power, they also criticise one another. They don’t all agree on what to do, or even what is right and what is wrong. But surely, in a vigorous democracy, the debate on the best and wisest course of action is as much the point as the inevitably imperfect solutions we cobble together. Democracy is messy and argumentative. Anything else would be a cult.
