A Rationale
Sauce
After failing to create a geo-narrative and one data visualisation, I decided to create something simple. I have designed a simple data visualisation based on transport statistics I retrieved from here. Doing so was very simple as the raw data was very basic and consisted of only numbers and percentages. I created my data visualisation using Adobe Illustrator because I feel it is the best software to use when creating a graphic. I began by thinking of the most simple ways of representing numbers and percentages. I tried to rule out the idea of using a chart or a graph to represent my data because it is unoriginal and boring. However I discovered through trial and error that laying out my data in a graph-like format was the best way to visualise the data I chose. I decided to use icons to represent the different types of vehicles as it simplified the graphic and separated it from a basic, boring graph or chart. Because the vehicles are represented by icons, the viewer can easily identify which mode on transport is preferred and which is not. I focused most of my energy in simplifying the information as much as possible. I felt that this particular data set needed to be easy to understand before it looked pleasing. I did however make an effort to add some aesthetic appeal once I pleased with the designs simplicity.
I took some inspiration from the basic data visualisations I found searching the internet. For Example: here, here and here. I also made an effort to give my data visualisation a slightly corporate and basic feel as it is relevant information for anyone who travels to and from work. I feel that the data I chose did not allow for the creativity or design elements that can be found in visualisations I listed above.
My project is not a highly original piece of work, it is however very simple and quite accurate. Many data visualisations chose form over function, mine is quite the opposite. I do not believe that my data visualisation is inspiring or a highly creative piece of work. It does however achieve its goal in visualising data in a way that makes its visually appealing and easy to understand.
I uploaded my data visualisation to moodle but here it is again. Just Incase.

Ok so 14 weeks ago I didn't know what I wanted to do with this blog. The style sheet was all over the place and I only just managed to put a handful of links in my posts. Slowly but surely I learnt a few tricks regarding html and css and applied them to my theme, posts and about page. I started off with one of the ready-made tumblr themes and made it my own by changing fonts, colours, margins and the background. I learnt most of the html/css basics in class and also taught myself a few things researching online. The background picture for instance (real rain logo), was self taught coding. I added RSS feeds with a link in the navigation. Along with an About page containing a link to my email address (also self taught coding). I used the same style sheet for both my blog and my about page
Incase you had not yet realised. No one is really "following" my blog. I did my best to integrate my blog with other websites. I posted my blog on my personal Facebook page with little results and tried to combine my IMDb profile with my blog. Unfortunately IMDb and Tumblr are incompatible. I also searched for and followed other blogs about film to try and gain some sort of recognition, again with no results. I then tried re-blogging popular posts about film at the expense of my blogs consistency with no results. All my posts were accompanied by tags containing the subject matter and the words "film" and "film review". As far as I know there are simply too many well-regarded film review blogs on tumblr and no one really wants to follow another one. I did incorporate Vimeo clips into my blog posts as they seemed to match my theme best. All the Vimeo mini players are linked to the original author. All my images have a link directly underneath titled: "Sauce". This is the link to the webpage I found the images. The source.
I should also add that I did post a widget and it can be found here. I tried to make the widget as subtle as possible as it is awful and detrimental to my blogs overall style. I could have included more (it's not hard) but really I didn't want a clock or tag cloud hovering over my posts. I did use Google Analytics and found it very useful. Here is the results. Like I said before, not much action here. I for one thought my blog was pretty good.
A Foreign Gem
Sauce
Four and a Half Stars
Foreign films are usually great. Mostly because the only ones you hear about are the good ones. The Intouchables was definitely one of the best foreign films I have seen. It was one of those rare 'perfect films'. Complete in every way. Ive never heard of or seen the actors in this film but Omar Sy was in a Jean-Pierre Jeunet film, which certainly cannot be a bad thing. Both actors were incredibly good in this, however.
The Intouchables is about a poor black man named Driss (Omar Sy) who walks into a job interview with the intention of not being hired. He needs to apply for one more job to get his unemployment benefit. The job interview is being held by a former aristocrat named Phillippe who recently became a quadriplegic and needs a new carer. To Driss' surprise he is hired and begins taking care of Phillippe. The two quickly become unlikely best of friends. I know this sounds cliche and boring but it is so very, very far from that.
It's a simple storyline with a lot more drama than plot. But it is in no way a bad thing here. The film is really funny and uplifting, it is the definition of a 'feel good'. The two lead actors do an outstanding job and work so naturally together. It's hard to imagine the two not being friends. I should also add that the french subtitles are super easy to read and not at all annoying to follow(as it can be sometimes). I can't say much more than that. Go out and watch it and feel really good afterwards. It's better than Rain Man.

New Oliver Stone
Sauce
Three and a Half Stars
Oliver Stone is back. And his latest film was very good. I was never the biggest Stone fan, I always found him to be an inconsistent director. His films are very jumpy, which is not particularly bad, it just doesn't work all the time. Savages, however was a great film for Oliver Stone. His style worked really well with the narrative. Just like it did with Natural Born Killers. Also, it stars Benicio Del Toro and John Travolta (about time they did something half decent again)
The film is about two marijuana growers and dealers, Ben(Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Chon(Taylor Kitsch). They both share a girlfriend called 'O' (Blake Lively). They eventually have to face off against Mexican drug lords after they refuse to partner with them. The Mexicans take 'O' and Ben and Chon find various ways to get her back.
The plot is a lot more complicated than that but, you know, spoilers. Benicio Del Toro plays an absolute menace with no conscience, really well in fact. John Travolta's character sort of reminded me of Ari Gold from Entourage. He played the 'scumbag' character like gold. I don't really know what to say about the rest of the film. I know it was extremely entertaining and I didn't want to leave my seat. There was nothing wrong with the film, there was just nothing amazing about it. It just sort of happened and I was finished with it. If you're looking for entertainment or a good 'easy-watcher' I couldn't recommend this more. But if you're after something a little more, this will not deliver.

The Horror Post//Remakes
Right, so seeing as a remake of Evil Dead is coming out in a week. I went out and got a handful of horror film remakes, for some reason. The remake of Halloween was god awful and excruciatingly long. The remake of The Thing was a punishment and a joke. And the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street was so very bad I am surprised I managed to sit through the whole thing without falling asleep (pun intended). Im keeping my fingers crossed for Evil Dead but I don't have high expectations any more. Originality in horror movies is dead. If they remake The Exorcist I'm going to lose my mind.
Sorry, I had to

Five Starts
Yep. Thats right. Five Stars. Woop!
I actually saw this film a while ago but I was waiting for it to come out for a long time. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Wes Anderson has a pretty flawless filmography. Even his animated film, Fantastic Mr. Fox was excellent. I will also mention that The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favourite films of all time. Ok, so maybe my opinion is a little bias here, but Moonrise Kingdom really is that good. Incase your reading this (not that anyone actually reads this blog) and thinking 'yea right, what does this jerk know about movies'. I'll give you another reason to go out and watch it. Moonrise Kingdom stars Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman and Frances McDormand. Still not interested? Click Here
Ok so the film is about two 12 year olds, Sam(Jared Gilman) and Suzy, (Kara Hayward) who live on a small Island off the coast of New England. They are pen pals who meet each other and awkwardly fall in love. They both escape and run away together, and find their way through the wilderness. This in turn worries the small island community and they form a search party. The situation escalates quickly and completely disrupts the entire town.
The film is shot beautifully and the cinematography is outstanding. You wouldn't expect any less from Wes Anderson. The two young actors who play Sam and Suzy are extraordinarily good. And they were both 12 years old in real life. Its a real accomplishment to get performances like that out of children that age. It's also quite a funny film, its all its delightful quirkiness. You can't help but chuckle at the films openly self deprecating humour. Edward Norton plays this scout master who is a complete moron, and it was really good to see him in such a different role. The first few scenes of the film are text-book Wes Anderson. It really brings a smile to the face of a fan. It is different to his earlier films however. In that it is uplifting, and really quite a cheerful, light story. All of his previous work (besides Fantastic Mr. Fox) is really complex and depressing, in the best way possible, of course. I can't really say anything else about this film. I've watched it twice now and could easily watch it again. If you like any previous Wes Anderson film or feel like you should give one a try. Or maybe you just want to watch a really good movie. I recommend this. Highly.

Your New Favourite Commercial Director
So Wes Anderson has been doing some brilliant work with television commercials recently. He is one of my favourite directors of all time. I think I will do a review on Moonrise Kingdom next (and give it 5 stars).Watch some of his ads and be bored by every other commercial you ever see.
The Perks of Being Emma Watson
Sauce
Three and a Half Stars
I would like to only be writing reviews no one cares about on art house films no one cares about. But unfortunately not that many have come out recently and it seems pointless to review films that aren't that recent. Anyway, here goes. I was really ready to hate this film. Teen movies seem to be getting worse and worse. But The Perks of Being a Wall Flower wasn't that bad. I'm sad to say I kind of liked it. The acting was pretty good. Ezra Miller who also starred in We need to talk about Kevin is a young actor to keep an eye out for. Emma Watson was stupidly good looking, her acting was probably pretty good too, I'm just not sure I was paying attention to that.
Put shortly (I'm sure most people have already seen it), Its about Charlie (Logan Lerman), a very shy and somewhat depressed freshman. He is befriended by Patrick(Ezra Miller) and is introduced to his friendship group (consisting of other 'troubled' teens and Sam (Emma Watson)). He instantly falls in love with Sam (why wouldn't you) and gets put into the 'friend zone'. Throughout the rest of the film he tries to wiggle his way out. Classic plot. But it's done pretty well to be honest.
All the characters are pretty troubled emotionally, but there is good balance between drama and plot. It seems to be in touch with every girl and boy out there with instagram and a pair of ray bans. I'm actually starting to think that The Smiths have some sort of product placement deal with films these days. The words 'I love the Smiths' seem to dribble out of every cool, awkward character in these sorts of films. But yes, it is what it is and I didn't hate it. Recommended for fans of 500 days of summer and Emma Watson's face
Here is one for the boys, its going to take up a bit of space here on this page but I could care less

Recommendation
Sauce
This is just a recommendation, so no star rating (I apologise to my 6 current followers). Generation Kill is a mini-series about the war in Iraq in 2003, by the creator of The Wire. It followers a Rolling stone Journalist and the group of first recon marines he in positioned with. Basically if you really liked Jarhead then you will love this. It's really gritty and grim, not that much happens to the marines, we sort of watch them travel around Baghdad, talk to each other, eat, and deal with the many problems that arise. There is no music, except for the songs the marines sing whilst on the road. So again, the same sort of take Jarhead had on modern warfare.
It stars Alexander Skarsgard, as the main character. This is a very good thing. The rest of the cast are mostly unknown but are undoubtedly brilliant in their given roles. So if you like mini series', war, Jarhead, Skarsgard etc. Watch Generation Kill.
