10 week - Thursday
All this day I’ve spent on filling this blog. I think it’s also a big deal, because it means for me, that I’ve finished my past tasks. Now I can finally go further.
A debt is paid.
One thing is that I also wanted to compile all my thoughts from my notes in order to see, what I can try out tomorrow in a printshop.
10 week - Tuesday/Wednesday
on Tuesday I came to my family and got a brief relax remedy.
on Wednesday I didn’t come at the printshop again. It’s kinda crisis. Real crisis. Don’t see any new directions.
One psychologist suggested me to change a media. There is a trick - if you are stuck and feel, that go round and round, change a format of your process. Eg make a figure out of plasticine (about your topic, of course), or build something. Probably, I need it.
But firstly, I have to summarize all my thoughts in one place and see, what I’ve got at this moment.
10 week - Monday
I had an “appointment” in a printshop. Bu I did;t com. I just want to sleep. And don’t do anything. I have a crisis, I realize, that I’m doing the same stuff. Once there was a break-through, and then it is turning into an identical similar work. I have no thought about pushing it further (am I scared? am I tired? also, I’ve been not sleeping properly for several months - I wake up every two hours). So, I just didn’t even go
9 week - Saturday
Tonight I’ve visited an opening of School of Vocal Improvisation. They’ve made a huge gig with a number of performances of course leaders. The main thought was “Allow yourself to make mistakes and to fail. If you do it, you are free”.
So, There is no right or wrong.
Also, what was memorable, - a performance of Sasha Bartashevich. She is a vocalist. And she just pushes a beat on a computer and starts to sing some random phrases, combining them with melismas and just beautiful sounds. A lot of silence, listening to music. She involves everybody in this atmosphere, it’s a bit hypnotic. Starting from calm narration, central part was also calm, and culmination was very bright - high noes with a full loud voice. A bit arabic. It was magnifying.

Also, a performance ad Alexander (guitarist and Gala Ga (vocalist). They met at the first time only at this gig, so they hadn’t ever play together. He started to play a riff. At the first time she was listening to him, then started sing some quiet sounds. Then it turned into a very beautiful piece, I wondered, how she included so nicely rhymed words (with a sense) in English and created a sustainable finished piece. It was as a bird singing.
What I’ve noticed as well, people there (visitors and acting ones) were very open and friendly. So, all the atmosphere said “come here and relax. we like each other”.
Maybe, improvisation is about acceptance?
9 week - Friday
Ok, go further.
Also I thought, how to push my work a bit further, at least change one instrument in my process. I realized, that hand is a prior instrument in music and in printing. I’ve decided to replace one step in a chain blade-screen-paper with a hand.
1) I’ve squeezed in on a screen with a hand (instead of a blade)
2) Ive used a hand as a transferring instrument (instead of a screen). I’ve squeezed ink with a blade on it, than painted on a sheet.
I wanna use hand as a sheet, a glove as a stencil for *lighting*
9 week - Friday
1) I’ve finished printing 30-60-90-... series
2) I’ve found works by a painter James Nares

I thought, That I could do something similar and add a not staff above it and try to play it (or give it to a musician). So, it would be interesting to pretend it like a peculiar way of documenting music (approximately, up and down, like in medieval times)
9 week - Thursday
1) I’ve bought more paper - more gold, a lot of white (+textured), silver, and film.
2) I have a number of thoughts about further prints
No work with rhythm - Do famous music patterns like son clave, … line a list like a time. 
Squeeze ink one time, but with stops in these points === On the backside stick a stencil or ink. Horizontal lines like rhythm, and squeeze with a blade on the other side

Or reverse: leave thin holes for ink (thiner or thicker depending on note value). All the diversity of colors would be strictly inside them. Like you listen to a note and its tones and shades when it sounds. Then - silence.
It is closer to readable prints
Blue on blue Gold foil on Gold It can mean background sound. But it still has value. And then - bright contrast prints. Each color can mean a certain instrument. And print it of a film and then put it one onto another.
I can bind it this way:

9 week - Wednesday
Today I’ve decided to work with tempo. I’ve split a screen in 4 parts and was squeezing ink on a screen with different speed: 30 /60 /90 /120/ 150/ ....

Interim crit.
I’ve realized, that my topic is really beneficial for me, because all the work I’ve done I can demonstrate. It is not just thoughts anymore, it is visualized, and it is really saved me.
The idea of the crit was to put our works/research on tables, write a brief description in Slack and go away. And our peers would come to your place and evaluate it without your presence.
I wrote something like this:
My project is about improvisation in music and silk-screen printing. I’m reflecting music processes, methods and behavior of improvisors in my printing actions and make prints. Now i’m on the stage of active work in the printing workshop. At the moment you can see results of a number of sessions (look at prints and pictures describing process): 1. Behavior of improvisors (red) 2. Musical Intervals (red/blue) 3. Just Paper tests (narrow sheets)
Summary:
1) I’ve understood that I SHOULD talk about my work and explain all my intensions from musical point of view. Because a lot of people looked at nice prints, but didn’t understand, what it’s all about
2) Tutor’s feedback:
Improvisational screen printing from a musical perspective. Great. Not coming across though yet. Change this and focus on making/ doing whT you are saying.
He meant that my work doesn't look as musical improvisation, it doesn’t say anything by itself. I should re-make my proposal or make my work visually strongly connected to mus.improv. like”Hey, this is about improvisation in music!”
He suggested 1) to go big format. Take a real huge roll of paper and print a composition 2) use notes as colors and print them and make a composition 3) give my work to a musician and ask to play it.
3) Personally I think, that connect colors with notes and print a narrative in colors is like the first thought of most of people, it’s obvious. On the other hand not everybody is into music, so it’s much more understandable than what I’m doing. Anyway, I think, that I’d rather need a better performance of my work. Eg right clear short descriptions, little schemes.
In two words, work at descriptive part.
8 week - Friday
Today I was testing pieces of paper.
I’ve decided to follow advice to experiment just with printing without a sense of music. Honestly, the result has suffered. really. Because I didn’t put any real reason in my action, and it turned out just into a mess.
But still, one main purpose was just to test paper, that’s it.

In the evening I’ve decided to go to buy proper paper. Firstly, I need good white paper - thick, quite hard/strong (in order not to turn into a wave after printing). Neutral white color. What I’ve got: there were so many kinds of it, and there was no any advice and confidence, that it wouldn’t distort while putting ink on it. So, I had to pick a number of types and test them already in a printshop.
2, 4, 5 - 3 kinds of white paper
1 - blue, 6 - olive (for trying light on dark, or dark on dark), 3 - gold, 7 - transparent paper. Additionally, I’ve bought a list of film. Tomorrow I’m going to test them out in the studio.
8 week - Thursday
Tutorial (Sebastian). Summary:
- Don’t say about your work so much. Max describe, what you’ve physically done. (confused)
- Think about the name of my project
- Think about quality of paper
- Forget about music. improvise just with screen printing. Separately from connections with music. (question, again)
8 week - Wednesday
I had the 2nd printing session in the printshop.
Today I’ve decided to visualize a musical interval.
I’ve decided to transfer it from a sound world to a visual world. So, I’ve put two colors (as two notes) and put it right one onto another, like they are placed while written.
And then I squeezed them together, like I’d taken them on an instrument. This is what’s happened:
Then I’ve decided to squeeze the same mix of inks a bit more times, pretending like these two sounds are lasting in time. At first, it is real to distinguish each sound, but the more time is spent, the less recognizable they become. And visualization of it shows the same tendency.
This was a harmonical method of taking an interval (when two sounds are taken together, like on the second line).
Then I tried to depict a melodical method of taking intervals (when one sound is played after another, like on the upper line)
1) Blue, then red
2) red, then blue
And then I just mixed two inks on blades and made the rest of prints
Finally, I tried to avoid using screen at all and to put ink with the blade right on paper. Nothing good came out of it (
7 week - Saturday/Sunday

I’ve decided just to turn on a camera on my computer and put it near my working place, because it’s simple and quite clearly catches, what I’m doing.

6) Prepared improvisation with a break
I drew lines on a screen, and they were to break in the middle. It is like when improvising is suddenly stopped, and then continued. It shows behavior of lines (playing) after interruption.
Directions were kept, but I also decided to experiment with dynamics and I accelerated my action, and it reflected on a picture.
