THERESA-Theresa was born in Burma, one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. For most of the past 50 years, Burma was ruled by military dictatorship and embroiled in a bitter civil war. Since then, Theresa earned a degree in accounting and now works at a local accounting firm, while still volunteering at RWN. ASMAA-Asmaa was born and raised in the bustling capital city of Baghdad, Iraq. Once in the U.S., Asmaa discovered Refugee Women's Network (RWN) and began working with RWN to establish herself in Atlanta. TILA-Tila was born in the small South Asian country of Bhutan, nestled in the eastern Himalayas and bordered by India and China. A short three years later, Tila now teaches English as a second language to refugees and immigrants in the Atlanta area.
The Refugee Women’s Network (RWN) in collaboration with the Georgia Conservancy (GC) is launching a Women’s Hiking Group in March of 2021 to facilitate health promotion, community integration, and environmental stewardship for a group of women survivors of war, conflict, and displacement. The Hiking Program promotes equity and inclusion by reducing barriers to participation in healthy, outdoor activities for a diverse community that is traditionally underrepresented in the outdoor experience. Through this community-based program, participants build confidence, develop a sense of belonging, and establish positive relationships with peers and community members within the natural spaces of their new Georgia home. GC and RWN are coordinating monthly hikes that begin with walks in local parks and gradually build the strength and stamina to climb mountains. The program aims to uplift non-traditional voices by including experts from diverse backgrounds to demonstrate the different ways that immigrants, POC, and women are actively engaging with Georgia’s environment. Outdoor leaders educate our hikers on trail safety, environmental education, physical fitness, conservation, indigenous and local history, and wellness. For more updates visit their website.
