Pacific Northwest Roadtrip! Day Two (part one)

We planned for a day of hiking at Crater Lake so we got up bright and early and crossed the highway to Beckie’s Café. Whenever I see homemade cinnamon buns on a breakfast menu I have to order it so we got one to share with our two breakfast orders. The bun was ENORMOUS and so were the portion sizes. The food was delicious and we had a lot left over for an afternoon snack later that day. This time we decided to take the West Rim Road toward the Watchman trailhead where we planned to take the hour-long hiking route to the top. The view from the trailhead was, again, staggering and this time we were nearby Wizard Island, a volcano inside a volcano! Unfortunately, the trail was closed due to snow and ice. We still wanted to get a hike in so we headed out on the Rim Trail. A few times along the trail we ran into patches of snow but we managed to hike through or around them. It wasnt until we hit a rocky hillside still covered in snow that we realized we weren’t going to be able to follow this trail anymore, but we had a great view of the meadows and forests west of the crater so we paused to take pictures before turning around. So far we’d been the only people on the trail and we were paused, taking photos and enjoying the absolutely perfect weather. Phil told me he had a gift for me in his backpack, so he had me sit down on a big lava rock…

Pacific Northwest Roadtrip! Day One

Saturday 14 June 2015 It was a perfectly San Francisco day when we left at 6:30am: completely socked in with fog. Neither of us had ever driven further north than Reno and were pleasently surprised by the first leg of the drive. We stopped in Redding, CA for breakfast at The Savory Spoon, a restaurant that also happens to be a non-profit. The proceeds from every meal help pay for their Community Mondays when people can come, dine, and pay what they can. The food was perfect roadtrip fare: tasty, filling, and not too greasy. From Redding we could already see Mt Shasta in the distance. We took a small detour to McCloud, CA to visit the McCloud Falls. After making our way around Mt Shasta we switched over to scenic highway 97 which brought us across the state line and into Klamath County, OR. The highway took us along Klamath Lake which is about where we started to realize Oregon, unlike California, still has water! We made our first trip into Crater Lake National Park on day one. We took the East Rim Road around the “crater” and parked our car at the Sun Notch trailhead. It was a short 20 minute hike up to the Phantom Ship Viewpoint, but when we got there we were both completely blown away. Our first view of Crater Lake was breathtaking. The sheer size of the “crater”, which is actually the remains of a collapsed volcano (and which could become active again one day!) is staggering. It was a perfectly sunny day and the water was deep blue and sparkling. Below us was the Phantom Ship, a strange jagged island jutting out from the lake. We couldn’t get enough of the view and that evening we eagerly planned our route for day two. After a long day of driving we finally made it to the Union Creek Resort where we spent the first night in the lodge. This roadside set-up was the perfect mix of comfy and rustic with wood-panneled rooms and delicious bbq served up from the “chuck wagon”. Looking back, I can’t believe how much we packed into day one! Despite all of the driving and stops it was a very relaxing and fun day, the perfect start to our trip.

Pacific Northwest Roadtrip! The Plan

Phil and I have been planning this roadtrip up the coast for MONTHS. He’s been preparing for this Step 1 Exam (medical boards) in Illinois and I’ve been out in San Francisco working (with a 2 week work detours to Dubai). Finally his boards are over, he has come back to the west coast, and we are on our much-anticipated week away! Neither of us have ever made this drive and neither of us have ever been to Oregon. Here’s the plan: From San Francisco, drive inland across Northern California and into Oregon, first visiting Crater Lake National Park. From there, spend a night in Bend, OR. We’ll take a scenic route past Mt. Hood and along the Columbia River to get to Portland where we’ll spend a few days navigating the long list of recommendations friends have given to us. We’ll cut right through Washington to get to Vancouver, BC with a lunch break in Seattle to see some good friends. It’ll be my first time in Vancouver (and Canada!) so we’re taking some extra time there. From BC we’ll make another lunch stop in Seattle before heading back to Oregon to explore wine country. We’re taking the coast back to San Francisco, starting in Coos Bay and making our way down by way of Eureka and the beautiful California redwoods. Outside Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India August 17-18, 2013

We took a sunset camel ride into the desert, slept on cots in the sand dunes, and rose with the sun and surrounded by beetles. My camel's name was Cooli and he had a bit of a burping problem. Amanda's camel, on the other hand, had a bit of a fit during our break in the desert but calmed down enough before the ride back. Even though I was very ill and fairly miserable, this was a memorable adventure and a gorgeous place. In the evening we enjoyed (well, I couldn't eat...) an Indian meal and watched some traditional dancing along with other travelers and in the morning headed into the amazing fortress city of Jaisalmer.

By the way, in case you are interested in purchasing your own camel in Rajasthan, my guide says they run for about 300USD.

6 Hours in Shanghai August 13, 2013

During a 7 1/2 hour layover at Pudong airport flying from Korea to India, Amanda and I venture into the city for a quick look. Drinks atop the Shanghai World Financial center, delicious soup dumplings, and a view of the skyline from Old Shanghai.

Too many "goodbye" dinners, sleepover on the last night in my apartment, and a lot of downtown shenanigans. I love these people!
