When Love Feels Threatened

I use a comic form to show common relationship situations in which the bond of love and regard feels under threat.

I can’t draw well enough to show the things that move me in relationships. Pictures convey nuances of emotion to which partners can’t help reacting or responding. I photograph family and friends enacting common relationship situations in which couples get stuck and un-stuck. If you recognize the actors please be sure to remember that they are not enacting a representation of their own relationship. They are acting for me.

I alter the photographs to look like sketch or comic art. I alter the photos so they will be more iconic, symbolic enough that you, the reader, might identify with the every man and every woman aspects of being in a relationship.

I have a lot to learn in working with this form. I use too many words. I teach too much rather than tell a story. But I need to make a commitment to trying to express what moves me. I hope it gets better as time goes by.

This is often an intersection after a long-standing pattern of pursuit and withdraw. Sometimes the pursuer can't let herself need her partner again. Sometimes the withdrawer is unable to find the resolve and courage to keep opening himself to possible rejection. At the beginning of the relationship and long into the relationship the struggle is to open to our vulnerable need for one another. So much easier said than done...
