There's a 65 year old woman at this bar that I go to once a month and have been for a year or so and no matter which day of the week or which part of the evening I go she's always there, drinking and always trying to make smalltalk and failing and getting rejected or brushed off by the wait staff or whatever rando she's trying to speak to about absolute garbage.
It reminds me of a bar I frequented in Connecticut where there was always a man of a similar age, except instead of desperately trying to get everyone else's attention he'd just talk and laugh to himself like a maniac so everyone would avoid him.
I wonder which of their lives is worse. On the one hand, people give the woman a chance but she just blows it and then they're annoyed by her. People knew the guy was nuts from the getgo but that made them fearful and being able to inspire fear in people is a form of power.
Anyways, the moral of the story is that if I ever find myself old and stripped of my dignity, I will be reaching for my blog name.

Byzantine Necklace, Late 6th - 7th century,
This necklace is part of the "Assiut Treasure" (or Asyut Hoard), a canonical group of early Byzantine jewelry discovered in Upper Egypt.
Such an opulent piece would have belonged to a member of the imperial family or the highest aristocracy, worn during formal occasions to signal wealth and status.
Beyond aesthetics, the arrangement of gems may reflect contemporary beliefs in their protective or talismanic qualities.
Decorated with sapphires, emeralds, amethysts and pearls,
The piece measures approximately 23 cm in diameter.
