You find him again.
Zoro, the swordsman who can nap anywhere.
This time, he’s sleeping under a lifeboat. His arms are crossed, one leg bent, swords resting beside him like loyal pets. You blink at him, half impressed, half confused.
“Why here?” you whisper to yourself.
“Because it’s quiet.” he mutters suddenly, eyes still closed.
You jump “You were awake?”
“Half.” He shifts a little, one eye opening lazily “You’re noisy.”
You crouch down, crossing your arms “I was not noisy. You’re just too light a sleeper.”
He hums, a sound that might be a laugh “Then stop sneaking around me.”
“I’m not sneaking!” you whisper back, offended “I was just… checking if you’re okay.”
He opens his eye now, green meeting yours. For a moment, you think he’s going to tease you, but he only blinks once, slowly.
“It’s cold,” you say finally, holding out a thin blanket you brought “Here.”
He doesn’t move, he just watches.
“I’m not gonna bite you.” you sigh, leaning closer to drape the blanket over his shoulders. Everyone says Zoro gets easily irritated if someone gets near him during his precious naps, but he doesn’t even flinch when you touch him.
Instead, his mouth twitches “You’re weird.”
“Says the man napping under a boat.”
That makes him huff a quiet laugh. You stand up quickly, pretending not to smile.
“Anyway, try not to catch a cold. You’re no use to Luffy if you sneeze during a fight.”
He grumbles something like “I don’t get sick.” but he pulls the blanket closer when he thinks you’re not looking.
Later that day, you find him again, this time in the crow’s nest. He’s slumped against the railing, the sea wind making his hair move gently.
“Zoro…” you call softly.
Nothing. He’s really asleep.
He looks peaceful. For someone who always fights so hard, he looks… soft like this.
“Why are you staring?” he mumbles suddenly, eye(s) still shut.
You freeze “I wasn’t!”
He smirks slightly “Liar.”
“Go back to sleep, moss head.”
“Bossy.”
“You like it.”
He opens his eye, amused “Maybe.”
Your heart does a weird flip. You quickly look away, pretending to watch the ocean.
Below, you hear Sanji calling for dinner. You turn to go.
“Hey.” Zoro says, still half asleep.
You look back.
“Thanks… for the blanket.”
You smile “You’re welcome, sleepyhead.”
He doesn’t answer. He’s already gone back to sleep.
You sigh, shaking your head “You’re gonna be the death of me, Zoro.”
The wind carries your words away, but if you looked closely, you’d swear his lips curved just a little.
You stop dead in your tracks.
“...You’ve gotta be kidding me.”
Above you, Zoro is sleeping, hanging from the ship’s beams. One arm hooked around a wooden bar, legs crossed like he’s chilling on a hammock, swords resting neatly on the beam beside him.
How does he even get up there?
You stare for a long moment, waiting for him to move, but he doesn’t. His chest rises and falls slowly, calm, steady. Definitely asleep.
You fold your arms, shaking your head.
“Is this better than a bed or something?” you whisper “Does the weird angle help you dream about fighting sea kings?”
No answer, obviously. Just the sound of waves.
You tilt your head “Maybe it’s like… a warrior thing. Training his balance even when sleeping?”
Still nothing. You narrow your eyes “Or maybe,” you say quietly, “he’s just too lazy to find an actual bed.”
The beam creaks slightly as the ship rocks, and your stomach twists a little “You could fall, you know. That’d be a stupid way to die, Zoro.”
You sigh, rubbing your forehead “I should try this napping style one day. Maybe I’d understand the logic.”
You climb up onto a crate to get a better look. He still doesn’t move. His face looks peaceful, so different from when he’s awake and scowling at everyone. His hand rests near one sword, like even in sleep he’s ready to fight.
You bite your lip, making sure he’s really asleep. No twitch, no eye opening, no sarcastic comment.
“So cute…” you whisper before you can stop yourself.
The words hang in the air. You freeze, but he doesn’t move. Relief fills you.
Quickly, you pull a small blanket from your shoulder bag, you always keep one now, because Zoro naps everywhere. You reach up carefully, stretching your arm just enough to drape it across him. It barely covers his torso, but it’s something.
“There,” you mumble “Try not to fall, idiot.”
You step down quietly and walk away, shaking your head.
Behind you, there’s a faint sound, a quiet exhale that might be a laugh, but that you don’t hear, too far to catch.
Zoro shifts just a little, pulling the blanket tighter around his shoulders. His lips curve into the smallest smirk.
“So cute, huh?” he murmurs under his breath “Guess I’ll stay up here a bit longer.”
It happens after a long, messy fight.
You’re exhausted, body heavy, mind buzzing, clothes covered in dust and salt. The crew is safe, the ship’s quiet again, and all you can think about is sleep.
You find him when he’s already passed out near the deck rail, swords close by, one hand resting on his chest. The late afternoon sun paints everything gold.
Normally, you’d just cover him and go, but today, you’re too tired to care.
“Move over.” you mumble, barely lifting your voice.
He doesn’t even open his eyes, just grunts and shifts to the side, making space like it’s the most normal thing in the world.
You drop down beside him, your back against the same wall, legs stretched out. The wood is warm. The sea breeze smells like salt and freedom.
“Finally quiet…” you whisper, eyes closing.
“Mm.” His voice is rough, sleepy “Don’t snore.”
You let out a weak laugh “You snore louder than Luffy sometimes.”
“Lies.”
“Truth.”
A small smirk appears on his face, but he doesn’t argue. You’re both too tired. Minutes pass in silence, just the sound of waves and faint creaking of the ship.
When you wake up again, the sun’s lower. Zoro’s still asleep, arms crossed again, jaw relaxed. Your shoulder aches a little, but for once, you don’t mind.
You quietly stand and stretch. Before you walk off, you glance back.
He’s shifted, not close enough to touch, but near enough that if you fell asleep again, you’d feel his warmth beside you. Always careful, always respectful.
You smile softly.
After that day, it becomes routine.
Sometimes, after training or battles or just lazy afternoons, you find him lying in the shade or on the deck, and instead of leaving, you just drop beside him.
He always scoots over a bit, no words needed. You nap in the same quiet bubble: shared silence, easy breathing, peace.
No one dares to interrupt. Even Luffy got kicked (lightly) once for shouting too close. Sanji tried to tease you, but Zoro gave him a look that said don’t.
You and Zoro never touch, not really. Sometimes your shoulders brush when the ship rocks, but that’s it. He always keeps that tiny distance, like he’s making sure you have your own space, your own air.
Still, it feels… nice and safe. Like something that doesn’t need to be explained.
And sometimes, before you drift off, you catch him glancing your way, quiet, steady, like he’s checking that you’re okay.
You never say anything. You just close your eyes again. Because right there, beside him, everything feels calm.
It’s one of those afternoons when the world feels heavy but peaceful. The sea is calm, the crew is strangely quiet, and you’re both tired from training.
You find him stretched out in his usual spot under the sunny part of the deck, arms behind his head, eye half-closed.
He opens one eye as you approach “You’re late.”
You snort “Didn’t know naps had a schedule.”
“They do,” he mutters, closing his eye again “You missed it.”
You roll your eyes but sit down next to him anyway, then lie back. The wood’s warm, the sun’s soft, the air smells like salt and rest. You sigh, eyes fluttering shut.
“Don’t ruin the schedule next time.” he says quietly, voice already fading into sleep.
“Yeah, yeah…” you mumble “Go back to dreaming about fights and swords.”
You hear a small huff of amusement. After that, silence. Just the sea and his steady breathing beside you.
You don’t know how long you sleep, but when you wake, the light’s changed, the sky is turning orange.
Something’s warm and heavy around you. You blink slowly, realizing your head’s on his chest, his arm draped around your waist, hand resting gently there.
Zoro’s still half-asleep, his hair messy, breath soft against your temple.
You freeze, for a second, your brain can’t process anything.
You try to move a little, but his arm tightens, just slightly. His voice comes out low and rough, full of sleep: “Stay a little longer.”
Your breath catches.
He shifts, without opening his eye “It’s better when you’re here.”
Your chest feels weird, too warm, too full. You look at him, his peaceful face, the faint line of a scar you’ve seen a hundred times but never this close.
Without thinking, you smile softly and whisper, “Okay.”
Then you lean in and press a light kiss to his cheek.
It’s only when you pull back that you realize what you’ve done.
Your heart jumps. You sit up too quickly, pretending to fix your hair, pretending you’re not about to melt into the floor.
Zoro doesn’t move. Doesn’t open his eye. He just keeps that calm, steady breathing.
You tell yourself he didn’t notice. You hope he didn’t.
You stand quietly and leave, cheeks hot, muttering under your breath, “Stupid… stupid…”
After you’re gone, Zoro exhales slowly, eye finally opening. His fingers brush the spot on his cheek where your lips touched.
He smirks faintly, almost shyly.
“Didn’t dream that, huh?” he murmurs.
Then he closes his eye again, the faintest smile still there “Yeah… better when you’re here.”
You tell yourself it didn’t happen.
It couldn’t have happened.
You were sleepy, your brain was mush, the sun was too warm—that’s all. Maybe you dreamed it. Maybe you just thought you kissed his cheek.
Because if you really did… and if he was awake… well, you’d never survive that level of embarrassment.
So you decide to forget it. Simple.
Just—pretend nothing happened. Easy.
Except… it’s not.
Zoro doesn’t mention it, ever. Not one word. He doesn’t look different, doesn’t act different. Same grumpy training face, same lazy smirk when Luffy gets too loud, same teasing remarks about your naps.
So clearly, he didn’t feel it. Right?
Right.
That’s what you keep telling yourself.
You even manage to half believe it.
Still, you stop joining him for naps.
Every time you walk by and see him sleeping, your stomach twists. You start finding new spots to rest—under the stairs, near the galley, anywhere but next to him.
The crew notices, of course.
“Oi, why aren’t you napping with moss-head anymore?” Luffy asks once, mouth full of meat.
You choke on your drink. “We don’t—nap together! We just—sometimes—sleep in the same general—uh—space!”
Sanji gives you a long look. “Sure, sweetheart. Whatever you say.”
You flee before you die of embarrassment.
Days pass like that… awkwardly, quietly, full of pretending. Until one afternoon after training, Zoro finally snaps.
You’re wiping sweat off your face, about to leave the deck, when his voice stops you.
“Oi.”
You freeze “What?”
He’s standing there, towel slung over his shoulder, swords at his hip, looking annoyingly calm “You’ve been avoiding me.”
You laugh… nervous, fake “What? No, I just… been busy! Studying maps, helping Nami, you know, important stuff!”
His eyebrow twitches “You hate maps.”
“I like them now!”
“Liar.”
You cross your arms, looking away “You’re imagining things.”
He steps closer, not enough to scare you, but enough that you can feel his presence. The air feels heavy suddenly, and you hate how your heart jumps.
“I’m not imagining anything,” he says quietly “You stopped showing up. Not for naps, not for breaks. You walk the other way when you see me.”
You try to sound calm “You’re overthinking. Maybe I just—”
“Did I do something?” he interrupts.
That makes you blink “What?”
He looks serious now, a small frown between his brows “Did I say something? Or… did something happen that I missed?”
You swallow. He’s not teasing. He’s genuinely confused.
“No,” you say quickly “You didn’t do anything.”
“Then why are you running away?”
“I’m not!” you blurt.
“Yeah, you are.”
Silence. The wind picks up, tugging at your hair.
You look away, staring at the waves “It’s nothing, okay? You just… keep napping weird, and I got tired of chasing after you. That’s all.”
Zoro studies you for a long moment, eyes sharp, too sharp. You feel like he can see straight through the lie.
Then he sighs “You’re a terrible liar.”
You flinch “Excuse me?”
He smirks slightly, but it doesn’t reach his eyes “Fine. Don’t tell me. But stop running away. It’s annoying.”
And before you can respond, he turns and walks off toward the weights, leaving you standing there, cheeks burning, mind spinning.
You grip your towel tighter.
“He definitely didn’t feel that kiss,” you mumble to yourself “Right?”
But deep down, something in his tone makes you wonder.
A few days later an island comes into view just before noon, green hills, clear beaches, not a soul in sight.
“An island!” Luffy yells, already hanging off the railing “Let’s go!”
The crew cheers, everyone grabbing bags and shouting plans. Everyone except Zoro, who’s sitting cross-legged on deck, swords by his side, already half in nap mode.
He says it so casually it almost slips by “Y/N and I are staying to guard the ship.”
You turn fast “Wait—what? Why me? I need to get some things too!”
He opens one eye “What things?”
You open your mouth… and nothing comes out. You search your mind desperately “Uh… rope?”
He blinks slowly “We have rope.”
“Food?”
“That’s Sanji’s job.”
You glare “Why are you even staying?”
“Because someone has to guard the ship,” he says again, stretching his legs out “Now sit down before you trip over yourself.”
You turn to the rest of the crew for backup… too late. They’re already halfway down the gangplank, Luffy’s laughter echoing toward the trees.
You exhale, defeated “Great. Stuck with you.”
Zoro leans back, eyes closing “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”
You groan and stomp off toward the kitchen.
“Where are you going?” he calls.
“Snack.” you mumble.
“Bring me some too,” he adds “Can’t leave the deck uncovered.”
You roll your eyes but wave a hand in defeat “Fine, boss.”
When you come back, you’ve got two rice balls and some sliced fruit on a small plate. Zoro’s still in the same spot, only now he’s tilted his head back to soak in the sun.
He moves his leg just enough for you to sit beside him “Thanks.”
“Don’t thank me,” you mutter “You owe me one.”
“You’ll survive.”
You eat quietly for a while, sharing bits of fruit. The breeze is warm, the ocean hums softly. It’s… peaceful.
Then Zoro’s voice breaks the calm “I didn’t mind the cheek kiss.”
You stop mid-chew “What?”
He doesn’t look at you “You’re thinking too much about it. You can stop avoiding me and our naps.”
Your jaw drops. Your hand holding the plate starts to give up from the shock, tilting toward the deck, until a calloused hand slides under yours, steadying it before it falls.
“I don’t want the cook idiot blaming me for wasting food.” he mutters.
You stare at his hand, then quickly pull yours back, flustered “I—I’m sorry about that. The kiss. It happened faster than my brain could process what I was doing.”
Zoro leans back again, eye half-closed “Don’t be sorry.”
You look at him, confused.
“I liked it.” he says simply.
The words hit harder than any sword swing could. Your heart stumbles, your face heats, and for a long second, you forget how to breathe.
He’s calm, unbothered, the sun painting his face gold. Like he didn’t just set your entire soul on fire.
You manage a small, shy smile and quietly sit down again beside him. The silence that follows isn’t awkward, it’s actually warm, safe, full of something new.
Eventually, the steady sound of the waves lulls you both. Your head grows heavy, and before you know it, sleep pulls you under.
When you wake, the sky is turning orange. You blink, feeling warmth pressed against your side.
Your body is curved into Zoro’s, his arm is loose around your waist, his chest solid and warm against your back.
Your breath catches. You start to move away, but his grip tightens gently, keeping you still.
Then his eye opens, soft, green, and far too close.
“Y/N…” he murmurs.
You can’t even form a reply before he leans in and kisses you, light, brief, but sure.
You blink, stunned, eyes wide as he pulls back just enough to whisper, “Now we’re even.”
For a moment, the world is quiet. The only sound is the ocean and your heart, too loud in your ears.
Then, before you can stop yourself, you reach out, grab his vest and pull him close again. Your lips meet again, softer at first, then deeper as the world seems to melt away. The air turns hot and heavy.
Zoro’s hand slides up, fingers threading gently through your hair, holding you close like he’s afraid you’ll vanish. His other hand finds your back, firm and steady, pulling you closer to his body.
A startled sound escapes you, half gasp, half a moan. Zoro breaks the kiss just enough to breathe out, voice low and rough “Damn…”
You blink up at him, cheeks burning “I—I was surprised.” you mumble, smiling despite yourself.
He watches you for a heartbeat, then his hands shift to your hips, guiding you closer until you end up sitting in his lap. Your face goes red instantly, but his expression stays calm like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
You hide your face against his neck, arms wrapping around his shoulders. His skin is warm, you can feel his heartbeat under your palms. For a few seconds, neither of you moves. The air between you feels alive.
Then, slowly, you lift your head again, you smile at him and then you kiss him once more. It’s a softer kiss this time, unhurried, careful, familiar. And that, somehow, created a reaction in him. You can feel his hardness press in between your legs.
But before one of you can even address it, you both turn at the sound of voices drifting from the shore.
The crew.
You pull back in panic, scrambling off his lap and landing beside him, too far for his liking, but safe enough to look innocent.
Zoro clears his throat quietly, trying to compose himself “Uh… Y/N?”
You turn, confused, then freeze as you see how his hands are resting awkwardly on his lap, trying to cover his friend down there, while his expression is torn between stoic and mortified.
Your eyes widen. The others are getting closer, their shadows already stretching over the deck.
Without thinking, you grab the nearest thing, the plate with your leftover snacks, and plop it right on his lap.
He blinks “What are you—”
“It looks less suspicious than you covering it with your hands!” you hiss through clenched teeth.
Footsteps. Voices.
Nami climbs aboard first “Everything okay here?”
“Yeah!” you answer too fast, forcing a smile.
Usopp frowns “You two look like you survived an explosion. Did someone attack the ship?”
“No attacks!” you say quickly “We just… finished some, uh… training!”
You turn your head sharply away from Zoro, cheeks on fire.
Sanji appears next, eyes narrowing “Oi, moss-head, who said you could steal from my kitchen?”
Both you and Zoro snap your heads toward him “I—I took the snacks!” you blurt.
Sanji’s irritation vanishes instantly. Hearts replace his pupils “Ah, my dear Y/N! Then it’s okay, you are always allowed!”
He kneels down, reaches for the plate, both you and Zoro freeze, but he only grabs one piece of fruit, humming happily as he walks off.
The others follow, still muttering but losing interest fast.
You finally exhale the breath you didn’t know you were holding “That was close…”
Zoro lets out a quiet laugh, rubbing the back of his neck “At least it worked.”
He lifts the plate off his lap and sets it aside, looking far more relaxed now.
You laugh, the tension breaking, and lean against his shoulder in a small, sideways hug. He doesn’t move away, just lets you rest there, a tiny smile playing on his lips.
Far down the deck, the crew glances back, whispering and wondering what actually happened.
But neither of you care. The ocean keeps rocking the ship, the air still warm, the space between you quieter than words, and you’re both enjoying your little bubble.
