attempting to balance recognizing Rose’s agency by acknowledging that she *did* make a choice while also recognizing that the circumstances of said choice were kinda manipulative and that the doctor did not intend to give her a choice until she forced the issue
much has been said about the way that Clara encouraging the doctor to break the rules on her behalf (dark water, before the flood) sets the pattern for the doctor doing just that in hell bent, but it never fails to take me out when I actually watch those episodes
there’s something interesting about the way the doctor is this very nontraditional person who still at least somewhat buys into kinda traditional ideas (ei settling down/having a family/etc) about what makes a good life (as indicated by the way they repeatedly try to push companions into that for what they see as their own good) despite not fitting into that at all themself
like it’s not dominant, since they of course often express the value and enjoyment their lifestyle has for them, and try to get others to join them, but it is *present*, y’know?
there’s something interesting about the way the doctor is this very nontraditional person who still at least somewhat buys into kinda traditional ideas (ei settling down/having a family/etc) about what makes a good life (as indicated by the way they repeatedly try to push companions into that for what they see as their own good) despite not fitting into that at all themself
i find tentoo/rose kinda fascinating bc it's positioned as this happily ever after kinda thing - that's certainly how ten is percieving it for them, even if he does also expect that rose will have to 'fix' tentoo - but I see things being pretty difficult and messy for them.
And i have a lot else to say about this, but i think it’s specifically that it’s supposed to be happy and is instead likely to be terrible, the ‘you’re supposed to be happy and you’re not’ aspect of it that draws me to it so much
cause i can definitely see tentoo putting pressure on himself to give rose the happy ending he thinks she wants (whether or not he is correct), trying to fit himself into the “normal” human life that he thinks he wants or wants to want, the two of them trying to pick up where they left off and chase happier times, all while really struggling with the many reasons the whole situation would suck for them
And to me it’s also an interesting extension of ten’s shaping his regeneration around rose and what he thinks she wants, and the fuckedup-edness of shaping oneself around a particular person, and also an extension of the s2 denial that the end is coming/that there’s something wrong

personally the way I tend to approach the doctor and rose is that while they’re genuinely lovely and well-suited to each other, I enjoy poking at the bits that are kind of dysfunctional
companion that’s an inhabitant of a generation ship - they’ve spent their entire life in deep space and will not reach anywhere in their lifetime. They appreciate the importance of their job on the ship (maybe engineering or food production or something), but kinda chafe against the fact that their reason for existing on the ship is to facilitate a journey they’ll never see the end of
Open spaces make them uncomfortable because they’ve never been anywhere not completely enclosed before
companion that’s an inhabitant of a generation ship - they’ve spent their entire life in deep space and will not reach anywhere in their lifetime. companion where - like what happened with rose - the doctor accidentally brings them home way after they meant to. Except this companion, previously, was a little more settled, and they’re gone for even longer, like 2+ years, so when they get back, they’ve lost their job, apartment, maybe had a partner who’s moved on (because it’s assumed they’re dead). So all this provides an additional incentive to keep traveling with the doctor because it’ll be a whole bunch of work to put their life back together and they just don’t wanna deal with it
still can’t get over the way that rose isn’t even a little bit mad at the doctor for going missing for a year or even asks why it happened. like girl what are you thinking
the thing is, the tv format of dr who rules out a main companion not staying on for an entire season
but i do wonder about the possibility of someone agreeing to travel with the doctor, going for one or two proper trips in the tardis and then going ‘nvm this or you sucks’
there is Something about the way that the doctor, early in new who, talks about his family/people/past in a way that kinda obscures that they’ve spent most of their life off-planet and that their lifestyle is materially mostly the same as before the war
i mean obviously it’s still massive so it makes sense that he talks about it that way but i still find the discrepancy interesting and it makes me wonder the degree to which he might feel he hasn’t “earned” the amount of grief he’s experiencing, like he doesn’t have the right to it when he’s basically living the same way as he was before
Jack, early on, fresh off of ‘never doubted him never will’ genuinely believing that being left behind was an accident, that the doctor thought he was really dead. And then time goes by and the doctor repeatedly fails to appear for crises (first encounter with the 456 and who knows what else) and jack’s overall faith in him erodes and the possibility of it being on purpose sinks in
and of course this is coinciding with his getting his hands dirtier, fallen hero arc so he’s also increasingly convinced that it was his fault somehow, that he did something wrong
i see your 'tentoo befriends the other universe's donna' and i raise you 'parallel donna is very hurt when she finds out about the other donna, due to her self-esteem issues making her feel like she's just a replacement for someone else'
i swear i've seen a gif of some deleted scene from 'dalek' where nine and rose hug when she runs to him at the end of the episode?? does this exist and if so does anyone have it??
