Hohenwerfen Castle, Austria 🇦🇹

Hohenwerfen Castle is a magnificent medieval fortress located on a rocky hill above the town of Werfen in Austria. Surrounded by the Alps, it offers spectacular views of the Salzach Valley.

The castle was founded in 1077 by the archbishops of Salzburg during a period of political conflict in the Investiture Controversy. It served as both a military fortress and a residence for powerful church leaders.

Over the centuries, Hohenwerfen Castle was expanded and strengthened. It survived wars, peasant uprisings, and political changes, becoming one of Austria’s most important defensive strongholds. It was also used as a prison for certain periods of its history.
