Checking In || Ren & Emelie

“Then that’s a perfect idea, Ren,” she said, not minding that the idea wasn’t creative. She didn’t even know how to make fajitas, given her actual cooking expertise. “I have faith in you.”
Ren’s face broke into a smile as she said that his idea was perfect. He didn’t hear those words very often- which he realized was because most of his ideas were admittedly pretty terrible. He walked to the refrigerator to open it, crouching down to look through the crisper for vegetables. “What do you like in them?” He asked curiously, looking over his shoulder at her.

Emelie chuckled when he said that he was an expert at chopping things. That made one of them. “I’m an expert at burning things. Did you know you can light almost anything on fire in the kitchen? Because I didn’t know until I really tried to cook on a stove-top.” Being able to admit that she was useless in that department was a relief, at least. She tried her best for Jason and Justin, for James too. But they knew the truth of her horrible cooking.
“What recipes do you know? I mean, we could work from there. Probably.”
Ren laughed, really unsure what she meant by that. He wasn’t sure how else you would cook in a normal kitchen other than on a stovetop. “Um, I can make fajitas. That’s mostly what I make if I’m left to cook for myself. I’m not terribly creative.” He admitted sheepishly.

emeliecarter:
She shook her head. “No, well, I don’t know,” Emelie said, trying to really think. She couldn’t even remember what her biological mother looked like — and it didn’t matter what the father of her adoptive mother or father looked like. It was embarrassing, in her mind, not being able to really say anything about her actual family. Diederich knew so much more, but he never wanted to share. Just that their mother was awful. “He was somewhere back in Germany. I don‘t know if I ever met him.”
"Oh." Ren felt bad, not knowing enough about Emelie to have anticipated it being a touchy subject. He felt awkward and apologetic, afraid of making it worse by apologizing though. He decided to try the subject, nervous about his ability to do that without making things even more awkward. "So what are we making? I'm an expert at chopping things, mostly." He offered, hoping to move past his mistake.

Hearing that Ren wasn’t really scarred with his mother’s odd cooking was a relief. Emelie didn’t want James to look back and think of how his mother cooked some really awful excuses for dinners. But, at least compared to thinking about the demons and everything happening, she didn’t mind him thinking about how bad the food was.
“That’s good. And you seemed to grow up just fine,” Emelie said, motioning to him. “Maybe James will get to be as tall as you. Could you imagine? I‘m already scared for when he becomes taller than me.”
“Maybe, yeah. You got a tall grandfather? Based on you and Justin I’m guessing that James has short people genes.” Ren teased, hoping that she wouldn’t mind.

emeliecarter:
“Good, I’m going to need some help with it,” Emelie admitted. “I don’t really know how to cook that well past microwave dinners, so… lets just say that James hasn’t been too thrilled with the dinners I’ve been making.” She realized that maybe admitting that before she offered to make him food would’ve been better, but at least she had him able to help her out now.
Ren laughed as she said that James wasn’t thrilled with her cooking, remembering when his mom had gone through a phase where she had tried to cook things that were outside of her skill level. “My mom used to cook us some really odd things. Don’t worry, it didn’t permanently scar all of us.” He assured her with a grin.

emeliecarter:
“I remember watching that zombie show, people got overwhelmed so fast,” she admitted. “Except the cops, you’re right.”
“It’s fine, it’s really fine,” Emelie said. “You could eat the entire fridge and that’s okay. I mean, not really that okay, but it’s not like I’m losing it to some awful person.” She sounded like such an idiot, good lord. “I’ll make food for the three of us, how about that? So everyone gets something to eat.”
Ren nodded, smiling as she said that the cops were an exception. He hated feeling so useless and helpless to protect the people of Tilden, wishing he knew some way to undo the demons- or better yet, banish them altogether. He knew that Travis had been up to something in regards to that but he had no idea how far it had gone with Derek’s involvement.
He was pulled from his thoughts as she said that she could make them all dinner. “That’d be nice. I can help.” He offered, thinking to himself that he should bring food to make up for having dinner at their place. He followed her to the kitchen, pushing his sleeves up to the elbows.

emeliecarter:
“Fun?” Emelie asked, chuckling. “I don’t know, it seems like a lot scarier way to go. Could you imagine those things running around and biting people? At least demons are kind about it. And I don’t think they’re into cannibalism.”
“Hey, Ren, don’t worry about it,” she said, putting a hand on his arm. “You’ve already thought so much more for James than Justin has since getting back. It’s all appreciated, I promise. Did you want anything to eat?”
“We could handle zombies. And by we I mean us cops. Guns would actually be effective versus zombies. We can’t really do much about these demons. And I feel that kind is a bit of a stretch.” Ren insisted with a faint grin, grateful that they could almost joke about all of this.
He felt bad as she mentioned Justin, that having been the one name that he’d been trying to avoid bringing up. “Oh, no. I’m okay. I don’t want to clear out your refrigerator. You and James could probably make it three days on what I eat in a meal.” He joked good-naturedly.
Checking In || Ren & Emelie
emeliecarter:
“Yeah. This is definitely different from what I expected. The whole end of the world. I thought it was going to be more along the lines of a zombie apocalypse or some virus outbreak.”
Emelie nodded, smiling as he realized how it could go wrong in the precinct. “It’s really the thought that counts, though. I appreciate it,” she replied, trying not to seem like she didn’t appreciate him.
“I always assumed it would just end. I expected it to be a lot more final.” Ren admitted, though he wondered if it was just more final than he had realized yet. “Zombies would have been more fun though, I think.” He offered with a half-hearted smile.
“Yeah, it’s not- I just didn’t think it through.” He admitted sheepishly, feeling a little embarrassed. He was always failing to think things through and most people didn’t fail to let him know about it.

“I know, Louisa got me the job. I don’t really know what I’m doing, just following everyone around like some lost puppy or something,” Emelie joked. “I mean, there’s not much we can do anyways, I’m sure it’s the same down at the station. They liked to control it all.”
“That’d be such a great place to be, I’m sure,” she thanked. “But he’d just get into trouble there. He’s too nosy, I think. It might get you all into trouble if no one knows how to sign.”
“Aww.” Ren grinned, imagining Em as a puppy. “I’m sure you’re doing your best. That’s all any of us can do.” He couldn’t begin to explain to her the overwhelming sense of despair and helplessness that he felt at the station every day. Morale was at an all time low, the cops feeling underpowered and unable to really keep the people of Tilden safe anymore.
“Ahh yeah. I didn’t think about that.” He admitted, realizing that it would be difficult to hang out with James since they wouldn’t have anyone to translate for them. As far as Ren knew Justin hadn’t learned much sign language since he had gotten back, something that surprised nobody really.

emeliecarter:
Not hearing a question directly related to one of the Aker men was a change of pace. Emelie was tired of being known as Justin Aker’s ex-wife. What a frustration to just have that as a label. She was more than just Justin.
“We’re doing great, Ren. I just got a job at the hospital — Oh lord, come on in. I’m being rude,” she said, pushing the door open for the giant to join her inside.
Ren’s smile widened as she said that she had gotten a job at the hospital. “That’s great, Em.” The hospital was one of the best jobs in town these days- though arguably one of the worst places to work with the demon takeover. He nodded and stepped inside as she invited him in, thanking her politely. “How’s James doing?” He asked, wondering who stayed with James while she was at work. “You know he’s welcome to come hang out at the precinct with us sometime. There’s usually at least one of us there and it’s possibly the safest place in town.” He offered.

emeliecarter:
Emelie was surprised to open the door and just find herself looking at someone’s torso. “Oh, Ren,” she said, smiling. “You’re definitely a sight for sore eyes.” Ren was always so kind and helpful to Emelie, especially while Justin had been missing due to the departure. She was always happy to talk to him for whatever reason. She could only imagine this was going to go just as nicely, compared to the past things she endured with the Aker brother nonsense.
Ren smiled as she spoke, always relieved whenever someone didn't act too surprised to see him. “I just wanted to come by and make sure that you didn’t need anything.” He wasn’t going to mention Justin specifically, feeling sure that Emelie was tired of hearing people talk or ask about her ex-husband. “You guys doing okay?” He asked hopefully.
Checking In || Ren & Emelie
Ren was relieved to be living back at home. He hadn’t forgotten how much he loved it there, preferring his parents company to that of Roza and the baby and whoever else was in and out of their home. Things were peaceful at home and he could even forget sometimes that the world had gone to hell outside.
Even throughout the murder investigation Ren had remained relatively calm, grateful for the chance to return to work. He couldn’t help but notice that Justin seemed worse than ever though, making him worry about Justin’s wife and kid. Ren had tried to be there for them when Justin departed- the whole police department had.
He stepped up their front porch steps, feeling a little awkward but determined to make sure that they were doing okay. He knocked, stepping back to wait. Ren had a self-awareness about him that most didn’t, his size having made him very cautious about what might alarm people.

“Okay, I’ve officially decided I’m going to try to be happy, even if my world…and the world…has gone to shit.”
“That’s the spirit.”
Gale smirked. “You still sleep?”
“I try, yeah. Roza’s baby hasn’t made it easy, but... I don’t think it will be a problem going forward.”
“Honestly, I’m a little jaded at this point.”
“I get that. It’s all feeling pretty surreal after so many days without proper sleep. Hopefully we can wrap this up soon.”
“I’m fine. Why?”
“It’s been one heck of a week. This stuff wears on me.”
