I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

since im on a roll about tragedies:
i am sick to death of fourth wall breaks that are funny. i want fourth wall breaks that make me want to cry.
give me hamlet looking up during his monologue to see the audience and plead with them for help. give me orpheus, on the road back up from the underworld begging us to make sure eurydice is there, to tell him she is safe. give me orpheus turning when the audience stays silent.
give me someone, bloody and full of tears monologuing to the camera when the narrative has wound itself so tight that they can't escape it anymore.
"youre just watching me. help me. im dying and im rotting and im losing myself and you wont do a thing."
i want the tragedy to be the performance. i want the tragedy to be, truly, in the eyes of the beholder.
But what if the audience responds?
What if the theater's audience reassures orpheus, tells him exactly what we all know; Eurydice is right there, she is safe and sound, keep walking and you'll be safe?
What do you do when you've given people the chance to stop the tragedy and they take it?
What then?
This makes me think of how, on that opening night, the first time Peter Pan was seen, and by an audience of adults, no less, when Peter begged the audience to clap their hands if they believed in fairies, the entire audience burst into applause. No one expected it, and the orchestra is, even today, instructed to lead the applause if the audience doesn’t. If that moment is anything to go by, however, where adults were watching a play and clapped so that Tinker Bell, a bit of light and a bell ringing, would survive, imagine how much louder they would scream to let Orpheus and Eurydice escape together.
