Moving on~

Hello mouse tumblr! :)

I bet some of you have noticed that I’ve become very inactive on tumblr this year. For a long time this mouse blog was the only blog I was really interested in updating and it kept me coming back to tumblr. However recently I’ve no longer seen a reason to come back much. I sometimes browse my feed and reblog fun stuff on my main blog @renkku but I don’t really post my own stuff anymore.

I started this blog in 2015. Back then I had just moved together with my then boyfriend and so I had the opportunity to have a bit more freedom with how I lived. So I got 6 female mice: Viivi, Vaavi, Musti, Kaneli, Retard and Litta. It was really fun taking care of the mice, watching them explore and do mousey things and photograph them to share to others. During the years I got more female mice when old ones passed away and I kept going with the blog until 2018.

In 2018 I moved away from my then boyfriend’s place to go to art school and my mice moved with me. I had the old girls Kehari and Suklaa and the young girls Banaani and Pikkinen. During this time it became more difficult to update the blog ‘cause the only internet option at the new place was my mobile data and tumblr was really slow.

Art school was an amazing experience in many ways but one thing I quickly noticed while going there was that I was no longer happy in my relationship. I broke up with my boyfriend in November and decided to move in back with my parents after art school. And so I moved back to my parents in June 2019 with my two mice Banaani and Pikkinen. Suklaa and Kehari had passed away during the winter due to health problems that come with old age.

And so we come to the present time. I still have Banaani and Pikkinen who are about one year and two months old. I don’t have plans to get more female mice at the moment. I want to give Banaani and Pikkinen a long happy life, but after that I will probably take a break from having mice. Right now I want to focus on my art and try to make it into a career if possible. :) I love my mice very much but I’m no longer in a place in my life when I can give them as much attention as I’d like to.

So for the mouse blog this is a kind of goodbye. :) It’s been fun sharing pictures and writing about mice for you all and taking part in conversations. I will still answer asks when I happen to come browse my feed but I won’t be making any new posts, at least for now. Who knows what will happen in the future.

Mouseblr! I have a question.

Pic is Nugget. Question: how do I get this turd to use his ball and wheel?

Background: He’s been with us a bit under a year and was the one no one wanted. So naturally, we loved him immediately. He’s a big ol’ fancy mouse. He’s not overweight but is giant compared to others. He lives alone, is friendly, and eats lots of fresh food and seeds.

Nugget won’t run in any wheel we get him. We’ve “showed” him how and he just acts like he has no legs. The wheels have been small wire skates and solid plastic. He also won’t run in his ball (though he absolutely knows how!). Worse, he rrrreeeaaaaalllyyy fouls his ball if he’s in it, even when encouraged to go to the bathroom in his litter box. He’s too messy to have out, and has fouled carpet before!

Nugget sucks sometimes. But! He clearly wants to be active! He has a two-story house (glass bottom, then a metal cage with a bunch of stairs and levels). We give him ladders, hides, and tons of stuff to run on and god do he do. He climbs and runs but ignores his wheel and stays still in his all.

Any tips? I want his life to be enriched and fulfilling. 🐾

The ball thing is likely to be because rodents don’t like them, though. They use their whiskers and sense of smell and touch to navigate most, and balls cut them off from these senses meaningfully. A playpen type of set up that you can line with a cleanable material and place a litterbox in would probably provide much better outside time. It allows you to get creative as you have in his cage too!

When I had a male mouse I would sometimes separate a playing area for him on the bathroom floor. Then I could just rinse it with water if the little guy pooped/peed all over the place. Of course always be careful and keep an eye on your mouse so they don’t escape. :)

Sometimes me and my sister would sit on the floor with out legs spread and feet touching so there’s a diamond shaped area between us and then have the mouse run free in the middle.

Pikkinen and Banaani

Sebastian absolutely loves all those fringey bird toys, and uses the little paper shreds to line his nests. I figured free is always better and made something sort of similar. I simply cut fringes in four toilet paper rolls, squished three into the fourth one, and strung it up to make him work a little bit. The hardest part really was stringing it up, I had to use a drill to get a big enough hole across the whole thing.

Sebastian loves nesting related enrichment more than food related enrichment, so I tend to lean more towards that sort of thing with him.

Hello! I hope you can help me. What fat content can milk be given to the mouse that gave birth? what to feed her? Thank you.

You feed the momma mouse with good quality seedmix like usual. Just make sure she always has some available. You can also give small amount of unflavored sourcream or meat for an extra source of protein and fat. It's ok if the momma mouse gets a bit chubby. I hope I answered the question. :)
