You should never ruin an apology, with an excuse.
When you’re wrong, bringing yourself to apologize is the hardest part - why ruin it with an excuse? If you’re truly sorry for what you did, just apologize, and leave it at that. Either you control your attitude, or it controls you.
...
push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise. 2. push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable. 3. erase processed food from your diet. start with no lollies, chips, biscuits, then erase pasta, rice, cereal, then bread. use the rule that if a child couldn’t identify what was in it, you don’t eat it. 4. get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else. 5. stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything. 6. buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice. 7. buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small. 8. strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full. 9. organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle. 10. have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck. 11. push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog. 12. message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through. 14. think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything. 15. become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends. 16. lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.

Andrew C. L. Gatewood Papers Letter, August 4, 1860. Manuscript #068
Va. Mil’ty. Institute August 4th, 1860
Dear Pa & Ma
I have written to Ma once & now it is my time to write to you. I not got much to tell you, but I will tell you all I know. I arrived here safe & entered the Institute on last Wednesday. I paid Col. Smith the money & took his receipt for it. I tell you this is a hard place. I have been initiated & it went pretty hard with me. They whipped me with a bayonet scabbard & they spelt my name, county & state, the Virginia Military Institute & what class I was going to enter. You know what they mean by spelling you is they tie your hands together put them over your legs or knees & then run a stick in between your legs, turn you over & then whip you with a bayonet scabbard. They call it bucking you. They give you a lick for every letter in your name, county, state, Va Mil Institute & what class you enter. I do tell it hurts awful bad. They twist your arms nearly off, & I don’t know what they don’t do.
We are all in camp now. It is a hard way of living. We go to bed every night at ten oclock & get up at five. They don’t allow you but three minutes to dress in the morning & then the roll is called. I was awful homesick for 2 or 3 days. I believe if I had had my money back I would have come home, but I begin to like it better now. We have pretty good fare. I am tenting with an old cadet from Louisiana by the name of Gay, some relation to the Gays in Pocahontas, & George Cameron, Marshall Francisco & Rowlett from Petersburg. I am pretty well acquainted now. There is a good many of my old schoolmates at the Institute. I know 20 or 30 cadets & young ones. I came out to cousin Warwick’s with George & Marshall. Cousin Warwick & cousin Ellen are very kind to me. There is a good many of cousin Bob Gatewoods scholars at VMI. They still call us rats, & will for six months. But have not troubled me for 4 days. They go round at night, pull you out of your tent & drag you some times. You must tell sister Mary to write to me. I can’t write very often as I have so much Military duty to attend to. I will write to her the first chance I get & I will write to sister Susan tomorrow or next day. I would not be out here now, if it was not Saturday. We got permission from Col. Smith this morning to come out here for 3 or 4 hours & then we will have to go back. Cousin Warwick & cous Ellen send their love to you all.
I do tell you the laws & regulations are very rigid here. Everything must be in its place or they will report you for it. Give my love to all of Uncle Henry’s family, Aunt [Cary] & Aunt Sarah. Tell Aunt Sarah I will write to her as soon as I can get time. We are kept so very busy. Tell William Lewis there is no vacant situation in Lexington that he could get. You must both write to me & give me all the news. Give my respects to Mr. [ ] & company. Tell Wm. B. Gatewood that is 4 little boys here not a bit larger than he is & they get along first rate. & Give my love to B[ ] tell him to be a good boy, & write to me. It will soon be time for us go & I will have to stop. I have been pretty homesick for 3 or 4 days but am getting over it. I would like mightily to see you all but I can’t I reckon for some time. Excuse all mistake as I am in a powerful hurry. Direct your letters to Cadet ACL Gatewood, Va Mil Institute, Lexington, VA.
Good bye, write soon. Your son /signed/ACL Gatewood
