Repair Her Armor

This blog is dedicated to show and change the looks of ridiculous female armors (and other outfits) that women tend to have in media; such as games and comics. The purpose is to show that over-sexualized women is not "empowering", but clearly offensive and ridiculous - not to mention it's also clearly out of context. We'll also show that their clothes could be greatly improved with a touch of common sense, equality and character. Feel free to submit! One of the characters in the upcomming Star Wars movie is a armored female character. What’s exciting about this character (aside from her being played by Gwendoline Christie, Brianne of Tarth from Game of Thrones) is that her armor is it’s totally done right. No boob plates, not sexy, but pragmatic, well as pragmatic as stormtrooper gets. 

That armor looks incredibly badass.

I’ve been wanting to do redesigns for these outfits and I’ve finally found some ideas! I’m going to be doing every single one of them using Eclair, one of my OCs who I need practice in drawing.

So to start things out here’s the Bikini Armour. The shoulder pad seemed like a good idea, but without anything else it was rather pointless (I was lucky enough to be drawing this near my tabletop RPG/video game loving father who gave me some pointers). I also added a shield, a helmet and some knucklebusters so she can punch some sense into video game character designers. The purple in her sleeves is a padded top she’s wearing under the chainmail. She’s wearing padded trousers as well but you can’t see them for obvious reasons. I also figured a neck guard would make sense.

Aside from the original image, inspiration for this came from the city guards in TES4 Oblivion, as well as the warriors in Claymore.

Now that is one example of turning a bikini into a full-blown suit of armor. The RHA-tabard is a fun touch!

Regarding inactivity

Hello, Uggla here. 

I want to let y’all know that RHA isn’t dead. The reason why I haven’t been very active on the blog lately is because I’ve been struggling with mental health. Also, school’s started, which takes up a lot of time and energy. 

I will keep working on RHA, but I have to look out for myself at the same time. I’m sure many of you can relate, and I hope you will be understanding.

I’m not a big fan of anime, but I do tend to leave Cartoon Network on when I’m using my computer and sometimes I end up watching a bit of it every now and again.

As that is, I noticed an absolutely atrociously inappropriate outfit on a young lady (Chi Chi from Dragon Ball) and I immediately felt the call to fix it for her.

I took the liberty of embellishing upon the design already present, giving her a jumpsuit instead of a bikini, and flattening her chest as well as rounding out her waist area to emphasize her youth.

What I find most disturbing about the unfixed version is the chest. I mean, it is very well-pronounced for what is supposed to be a child.

I wanted to show you guys some female armor from the upcoming game Darkest Dungeon that I’m keeping my eye on.

While there is boobplates and Helions leather armor is a bit on the line, I think it’s some nice design they got going for the game.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this game. I agree about the design, I think it looks very intriguing.

Apparently it’s from a ... horror comic series, “with modern twists or expanded plots” according to Wikipedia.

agrias oaks was my second female character crush. she’s a huge badass and her armor is super rad. i drew countless pictures of her in 7-9 grade and i still love her immensely.

I know very little about Final Fantasy, and even less about this character, but she looks absolutely fantastic.

A soon as I saw this pic on my dash, I felt like I needed to do something about it. The belt is just a personal thing I thought would be cool because that whole middle area was looking way empty, but mostly chopping off the heels, loosening the clothing a tad, and replacing the helium in that chest with actual human tissue were the most important part. Didn’t want to alter the design too much overall though. 

I like it. It actually looks like cloth now, and not like paint.

I once saw Tifa from FF7 here. Her outfit in the game is absolutely ridiculous but has anyone submitted her “sort of redesign” from the movie sequel Advent Children? Because her outfit got some serious improvements and she actually looks like a martial artist :D I got all of the pictures from final fantasy wikia and all of them are official.

The picture above is her original design. The render(?) is actually from Final Fantasy Dissidia 012 but the outfit is the same.

The picture below is her outfit in Advent Children. Picture is again from Dissidia. I mean… she has shorts! And there are no unnececcary cutouts (if her stomach area doesn’t count)

I also want to add the picture of the best villain Final Fantasy has ever had (in my opinion anyway). So, so many FF women have ridiculous and nonexistant clothes that it’s refreshing to see that some of the designers give men the same treatment. I’d still prefer having all of the characters fully clothed though. Anyways Kuja’s the most scantily clad male character I’ve ever seen. Picture again from Dissidia.

At least he has the most sensitive part of his body protected xD

Here she is!

So you can see she’s adorable and not super sexualized! (thank god, she’s only a baby)

Let’s look at her chest plate. It has no practical use besides keeping her boobies in check. It’s basically a hard bando. (from experiencing this outfit myself, I can actually tell you that if well fitted, it works really well as a bra)

The shirt with the frills is only for looks, and offers absolutely no protection. Not to mention her soul gem’s vulnerable!

woops she got stabbed in the stomach. Thank goodness she can heal!

Let’s check out that skirt. The fact that it’s pleated allows great mobilization. It’s real comfy too!

Her stockings, however, deserve to go to hell. How are they staying up??? I don’t know please tell me!!

Her shoes look pretty cool, don’t they? Not too much heel, and whatever material they are allows them to be pretty quiet.

The arm decorations and sleeves are nothing but, well, decorations. They do offer warmth while maintaining a light weight, though.

Her gloves are quite useful, as they help with gripping a handle that might make the hands sore. Just don’t try to text with them.

Then we have the glorious cape. While capes are for looks, they do provide significant warmth. It doesn’t restrict maneuverability and can be used as a comfy blanket!

So, in conclusion to this post, armor does not have to be practical or even functional, and can be just for looks! But it should always respect the character and not treat them as something just for sexual gratification!

Even villains too!

The outfits in Madoka Magica do sacrifice a bit of practicality for cutesy frills and bows and stuff. Perhaps the justification is that magical girls can take a lot more physical damage than regular humans. However, it doesn’t explain why, as you said, their soul gems are out in the open. You’d think they’d want to keep them as protected as possible. 

I agree 110% with you on the conclusion. Madoka Magica have very well developed characters, and their outfits and accessories match them to a T. AndIkindaloveitforthat

OH man, I’ve been waiting for you guys to start posting again! I did an edit of an assassin character you posted a while back. I thought she’d look a bit more intimidating with her whole face covered, for one thing, and the original had all these weird features that would get in the way of the whole ‘professional murder’ deal (like a shirt that was mostly just a shawl that only barely came down past her nipples!?). I was way too excited to make an elfy assassin look cooler and a bit more prepped for her job!

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned Mass Effect (this shot from Mass effect 3) on this blog before but it does pretty well with female Commander Shepard.  She wears nearly the same armor as her male counterpart, though admittedly she has some boob plate going on there.

I always felt powerful playing as Femshep. Felt good.
