The Mind of Me
I’ve realized I’m not built for the relationship everyone desires Yes, there are times when I despise my independency But realistically my need for solidarity surpasses my want for intimacy. I don’t care for such things but with the absence of that kind of love I can’t help but wonder if there’s something wrong with me Because even if the opportunity arises And they do everything right, above and beyond what any girl would want I have a hard time accepting that I’m wanted from the long time spent unwanted.
And I know what I think of myself is untrue My high self standards stem from our society’s expectation of perfection And appreciation for materialistic lifestyles and temporary fixations. I can’t help but compare myself to my peers I’m proud of their current successes and future careers But I put them high on a pedestal that to me is unreachable And I dedicate myself to keep their happiness a flight Despite the cost that my feelings will be sacrificed.
So whoever you are, if you are a wild card Played when I have my hand planned out I can’t assure you that I’m willing to put everything out on the table For a variable I never considered to factor into my calculations Because even the heavens won’t know when I’ll be ready to love you A kind of uncertainty that no one deserves to go through And it’s not fair to keep you on stand-by For a flight of potential could-have-beens that may never see sky.
