Where most people see scraps of driftwood and scraggly roots, Killeen-based artist Deborah J. Hildebrand sees a world of creatures and critters. Hildebrand began her brand, Debbie’s Digs, almost two years ago. She collects pieces of wood and roots along lake banks and turns them into art. Hildebrand searches many different lakes for her finds, but often frequents Belton Lake. “Every time I went to the lake, I liked to treasure hunt,” Hildebrand said. The thorny vines that serve as the basis for the art are prevalent throughout the state. “It’s an obnoxious vine found all over Texas,” she said. “I could tell you what it is, but I don’t want people to copy.” Today’s display at the festival is the artist’s first showcase. “Keep Austin Weird was my goal,” Deborah said. After six months of determined communication, she landed a spot at the festival - gaining approval just 11 days ago. Be sure to check out Debbie’s Digs at tonight’s festival. Some of her pieces glow in the dark!
