VANITAS // X
vanitys-vesselâ:
The small girl stepped out, looking as if the were under a spotlight. It made sense for an invisible girl to be frightened now that she couldnât use her disappearing act. Having to force a patient smile on his lips as she slowly maneuvered herself to just out of the threshold. Part of him wanted to snap at the girl to move quicker but he found that such outbursts usually colored his tone.
Too risky to play with then the girl was so essential to his breaking out of this nightmarish ârehabilitation centerâ. So, for now he would play nice.
âHello.â The words repeated back at her, pushing himself off the wall to stand up straight. That warm honey still coating his tone as he took a small step towards her. Eyes scanning the girlâs face, surprised to see that her eyes werenât rimmed with red. Although, he supposed that she had already passed her grieving time.
âI was starting to think you would never come out.â Forcing a chuckle to leave his lips as he bent down, that patient smile still plastered on his lips. He was certain that if he continued to speak sugar coated words to the girl that she would be following him like a lost little duckling.
It was easy to capitalize on newcomers. They were always afraid. Always so lonely. His words promised them comfort and company without him having to say it. âI figured it was time that someone gave you the grand tour.â Another step forward. Wanting to fill the silence with his voice. The longer she was exposed the more he could captivate her. âthe nameâs Vanitas.â Golden eyes glinting as they narrowed on her. A useful tool.
That is, if he could make her feel completely dependent on him.
From the way she greeted him to the way she slouched as if trying to take up as little room as possible, he felt it wouldnât take too much to coerce the girl. Just a little time talking to her and she would be as transfixed as the rest of them.
When he was done with her, he could ditch her on the side of the road. Go back to his old life.
He just needed to take his time.
Her shoulders relaxed as he greeted her back, humored laugh coloring his words. She flushed and looked down, a soft, âsorry,â on her lips. She still wanted to run back into her room, even with his good natured comment.
Listening to him was so... easy. Usually people were so difficult to focus on. Her mind wanting to run and hide from them, in fear of their unpredictable actions. But with this man... Vanitas. It wasnât scary at all. Weirdly she felt at ease with him around. Maybe it was the friendly smile. Or the warm, honey colored eyes. Either way, she found Herself giving him a small smile as her left hand waved slightly from where it was holding the door.
âXion. And uhm. I didnât know there was one?â To be honest, she didnât really want to go on a tour. She wanted to do anything but walk around the facility. But he sounded so nice and honestly she wasnât sure if she wanted to be alone again right now. Something about this Vanitas felt... safe. With him around, she felt like maybe she didnât need to hide.
Other people were still out of the question though.
Casting a nervous glance at the rest of the occupied room and hallway, she carefully stepped out of the room, letting the door click shut behind her. Returning her gaze to the pretty voice, she tried for another smile, hoping it wasnât as strained as she felt inside.
âIs it long?â
Her right hand stayed on the door handle as her back pressed against said door. The burning had finally stopped, which was nice. Her left tugged at the end of her sleeve, fiddling with it as her anxious energy grew. As much as she was focusing on him, she could still feel their eyes. With a soft breath, Xion looked up at him again, staring just below his actual eyes, praying the feeling would lessen. She itched for this to be over.
But then sheâd probably have to say goodbye to Vanitas. She was conflicted.
She took a step from the door, grabbing the arm with the bracelet, rubbing the shirt fabric between her fingers subtly. She felt a pull towards the man, which she could only attribute to her anxiety and paranoia.
With him near her maybe this little outing wouldnât go nearly as disastrous as the last time she was around the rest of the small community of prisoners.

VANITAS // X
fledgling--emotionsâ:
The high blush on her cheeks intensified at the tips of her ears, her pale skin doing a terrible job at hiding her embarrassment. Vanitas couldâve been fooled into thinking it was from the cold if he hadnât seen the glassiness of her eyes before she hid them.Â
He listened to her fumble around, words leaving her mouth in disjointed sentences, panicked excuses, and Vanitas thought for a brief moment that his sleep deprived brain was making this whole conversation feel like a fever dream.Â
A promise to pay for a new lock.Â
That much he heard.Â
Money was becoming, well, an issue. Being cutoff from family fortune for pursuing a life outside of his fatherâs reach was far from ideal. Commissions had become slower after the holidays blew over, paint was damn expensive, and people were stingy to a point beyond reason. Heâd taken to hanging finished paintings at the small cafe downtown; enough foot traffic from the college nearby, enough townie, elitist assholes whoâd buy three dots of paint on a canvas let alone real works of art. Or perhaps, not as many as heâd hoped. The paintings hadnât been selling as fast as he would have liked. The hole in his pocket only growing larger.
And like hell he would beg his father for money.Â
Still, struggling was better than being stuffed in a suit and forced into a business he so desperately wanted to see toppleâŠ
Lost in his thoughts, Vanitas was certain he had been glaring at herâ the girl stood, looking as if she expected to be struck next. What was the problem? Heâd put the knife away in the pocket of his jogger pants already. If anything, the fluff of his bedhead mustâve made him look ridiculous.Â
The wind had begun to angle the rain, wetting his arm leaning on the door frame as stray drops darkened against his shirt. The cold had begun to seep in the apartment. Vanitas opened his mouth to speak, but she beat him to it.
An exchange of information over the lock. Right.Â
The phone screen thrust towards him was distorted with little rain droplets, worsened by her shaking hands. Vanitas eyed it. Then eyed her. He couldnât believe what he was consideringâŠ
âCome in.â
She seemed lost in reeling thoughts, bangs hung over her eyes and her hand still extended in offering her phone without looking. He sighed, this is what he gets for his charity, huh? Nonetheless, he repeated himself.Â
âAre you deaf? I said come in. Not gonna stand here with the door open and waterlog the place.âÂ
Vanitas leaned back against the door, arms crossed, waitingâŠ
Her arms hurt. Her knees hurt. Her head hurt. Internally Xion was screaming to refuse the kind offer. Sheâd already put more than enough issues onto the man. But her body was disagreeing. She was tired. It was late and she was locked outside and here was a seemingly generous man just offering to help her.
The fact that he repeated himself in that gruff, demanding tone, really helped motivate her as well. As soon as he repeated himself, Xion jumped with a quick, âSorry!â before rushing past him, into the quiet apartment. She shivered as the cool rain suddenly felt more cold than it did while she was outside in it.
She wiped as much of the rain water off of her face as she could before wrapping her arms around herself and turning back towards her host.
Should she apologize again? Should she thank him? Definitely one of those two. She felt so out of place. Not at all in anything close to her element. She wasnât quite sure what to do with herself other than standing awkwardly in the middle of the entrance area.
âTh-thank you. For letting me in. I uh. Sorry if I get anything wet?â
âWow. Nice.â
She bit back a sigh. Was this awkward? It probably was. But she was too tired to really care. Despite the rain out of her eyes, things were still just the slightest bit blurry. And her face felt a little warm. Maybe a lot of warm. It was hard to tell with how cold the rest of her felt. She really hoped she wasnât getting sick. A new key and lock meant she needed to keep up her hours.
She bit her lip.
She felt the need to apologize again, but shook it off, pulling at the ends of her soaked jacket.
@fledgling--emotionsâ
It couldnât have been more than a half an hour before she felt the imposing presence fall around her. The steps outside her door were like bellowing drums in her skull. She wanted to be left alone. She knew it was unwise to ignore the eventual calling for her, but dammit, she really couldnât muster up the will to leave her self-imposed isolation.
Or⊠maybe she could? It was strange. A voice called from beyond the door. She took comfort in the way it helped her feel less alone. More put together. Less trapped. A voice in the dark to help pull her out.
A step outside the door couldnât hurt, right? If it was with the voice, she could just ignore the other people out there. Surly a voice so welcoming wouldnât drown her in questions and attention. With a shaky breath, Xion stood, carefully pushing the chair back into its place. She stretched slightly as joints popped from remaining still for so long. Moments after sheâd shook her head clear of the suffocating dread sheâd been drowning in before, making her way to the door with careful purpose. No matter how inviting the voice sounded, the rest of the world beyond it still had her heart racing.
With a light grasp of the knob, she turned it, pulling the door open part way. She was weirdly relieved to see the man opposite from her.
âUh, hello,â she said a bit nervously. Not from him though. From the eyes she could already feel around them. Surly they were on her. Her eyes moved down, to stare at his clothed chest rather than to confirm her suspicions. Her wrist started to heat up. She subtly shook her right hand, ignoring the trapped feeling as it quickly returned.
She considered stepping out of the doorway to stand closer to the only person in the entire place that wasnât making her skin crawl, but quickly dismissed it. She pulled the long grey sleeve of the shirt sheâd been forced to wear over her fists. She wanted to stand closer to him. But she chose to wait. Maybe he was just saying hi and she could retreat back into the room. Sheâd be disappointed that he left, but at least the heavy sense of being watched would lessen as much as it could in a place like this.

â„ : Your muse crying about something đđ
Vanitas didnât understand why this was happening, he didnât want to understand why. When did this creep up on him?Â
This feeling was unallowed. Especially, above all, in the presence of others. And certainly when this said other was sitting two feet away from him on the couch, thankfully absorbed in what was on the screen in front of them and, currently, paying him no mind, too enraptured in seeing it through to the end. He watched the colors flicker across her face, its light dousing her pale skin and then looked to the floor, to the coffee table, to the half empty cup of coffee heâd forgotten aboutâŠhe couldnât block out the stupid, pitiful music; what should be corny and laughable on a good day, getting under his skin now.  Â
Why had she convinced him to watch this movie? A cartoon nonetheless. It had no right making him feel.Â
He had tried to force it downâ that sickening lump in his throatâ but the welling in his eyes wouldnât dam, despite how many times he blinked and squeezed them shut.Â
A bottle, corked for far too long, ready to outpour its contents.
Somehow, when the credits began to roll, that made it worse.Â
A single tear slipped between his lashes and drew a fast line down his cheek; one he couldnât catch. Then another, and a few more followed in its wake. And, god, was her attention probably on him now. An emotional mess over the animated adventures of a fat, ungrateful bear and his dim-witted animal friends. What a great look.Â
âXionâŠâ he swallowed the shakiness in his voice, âdonât you dare breathe a word of this to anyone, I swearâŠâ
The movie was nice. It was something cute about a bear and his friends finding new ways to entertain their selves and deepen their bonds with each other. Something Xion could definitely relate to. The visuals were pleasing to look at as well.
What was odd about the entire situation was her companion however. Sheâd only watched it because it happened to come on. And sure enough, about ten minutes into the movie, Vanitas had plopped down next to her to join. Sheâd chosen not to say anything, of course. Better to leave it then to provoke him unnecessarily.
In fact heâd neglected to say anything throughout the duration of the movie, so it was pretty easy to get pulled back into it. Like sheâd earlier thought, it really was a cute film.
But then just as the movie began to take a more somber tone as the ending drew near, Vanitas had pulled her from her trance, her name said with an edge of something dangerous but overlaying what was decidedly a tremble. She turned towards him, shocked by the open emotion written across his features.
She averted her gaze quickly, nodding. âI wonât. Are... Are you okay?â She asked hesitantly. She wanted to help, but she was afraid of pushing the wrong button and ruining the quiet companionship that sheâd felt during the film.
He was certainly here for a reason. As sad as the movie was, it shouldnât have been enough to make the great Vanitas shed a tear. Unless of course she was mistaken, and he was actually secretly a sap. She bit back the smile that threatened to break through her shocked expression. Oh, he wouldnât like her expressing that thought at all.
@fledgling--emotions
VANITAS // X
fledgling--emotionsâ:
A distant noise woke Vanitas from an already light sleep. The rain hammering against the windowpane had been unrelenting, enough to transition from a lulling ambiance to a grating distraction, keeping him restless and awake far later than he had intended.Â
He blinked, the numbers of the alarm clock a red blur until his eyes focusedâŠif it was nearing 6:30am alreadyâ 3:55am, thank fuckâ he resettled into mattress, a relieving thought that he might be blessed with a couple more hours of sleep as he shut his eyes once again.Â
But life wasnât that kind to him. No.Â
That noise againâ a distinct âca-chink,â the scraping of metal on metal.Â
The wind probably knocked something against his door. He resettled, frustrated in his inability to change the weather.Â
And thenâŠrustling. Unmistakably the forced turn of a doorknob, a snapâŠHis eyes shot open. The emptiness of his apartment settling in, tiredness leaving his body in the form of adrenaline. Oh, was he awake now.Â
Of all the places to robâŠ.what an unlucky idiot.Â
Vanitas slipped out of bed, his bare feet padding cautiously against the wood floor. He kept his body flush to the wall as he pulled the curtain back to peer out the windowâ unable to see much of anything beyond the shadow of a personâŠa woman, he thought. She lookedâŠspineless; hunched over and making no headway on lockpicking anymore. Had she really come this far just to give up? He was almost disappointed. Almost.Â
Never one to be too cautious, Vanitas grabbed his keys off the dresser drawer on his way to the entrance, clutching at the small folding knife attached to its ring. Face to face with the front door, he paused a moment. The sensible thing to do: call 911. But when was he ever sensible. With his luck theyâd dispatch Aqua anyways. He would rather this thief shoot him point blank between the eyes than have her come to his rescue.Â
The doorknob had stopped jangling entirely. Perhaps theyâd realized the error of their ways. Coward. Â
With a steady breath, Vanitas slid the chain out of place, unhitched the deadboltâ the worsening rain drowning out every noise either of them could possibly makeâ and pulled the door open.Â
âŠWhat the hell kind of sick joke was this?Â
This thief wasâŠabout as threatening as a mouse. Soaked to the core and shaking, her black hair clung around her face and framed her wide eyes, akin to the expression of a child whoâd stuck their hand down the cookie jar and got caught. As if heâd scared the shit out of her. Â
And still, he eyeballed her suspiciously. A glowering threat still lingering under the surface.Â
âIf youâre trying to break into my place youâre doing a shit job at it.â
He took one look at her confused expression and put two and two together. Wrong apartment. What did she not know how to read? The tenseness in his body relaxed, the tiredness reentering him in the form of pure exasperation. He pointed to the number above the buzzer, a quick and condescending prod. Apartment 224. âUnless Iâve pissed off the landlord recently, Iâm pretty sure I still live here.â
With the way she curled in on herself, Vanitas towered over herâ until she straightened her back, putting them near eye to eye. The broken key clutched in her hand⊠âAh, fuck.â âŠThe rest of it jammed in his doorknob.Â
âHow did you manage toâ?â Vanitas huffed, forgoing the effort of dislodging the broken key from his door, âForget it. I donât care.âÂ
He cared.
The door opening was probably the last thing sheâd been expecting. A thunder strike was more likely perceived than suddenly being faced with a disgruntled man with spiky black hair and a glare powerful enough to melt her on the spot. She was frozen, broken key clutched in her fist.
The way he spoke set her nerves on edge. Sheâd obviously woken him up from what had previously been a restful sleep. All rough and irritated. She felt her face flush as he continued to speak, almost burning as his eyes met the lock.
The shock was making her thoughts jumbled. It finally clicked. She was at the wrong apartment. She looked left of the door and sure enough. Door 222 was right there. As she was standing with a broken key at 224. The embarrassment and confusion she felt before was nothing to how she felt now. Her ears felt hot as the sting in her eyes intensified. She brought the broken key up to her chest, looking away from the man, as meeting his eyes would be too difficult, as well as needing to hide her face.
âIâm so sorry!â she exclaimed, looking up briefly. âI- I thought it was my door and so i just- I just shoved the key in and- and it-â Her grip tightened around the metal as she shrank back from him. âIâll pay for a new lock! I promise.â It was the least she could do. Money was always pretty tight, but locks werenât that expensive, right? Surly she could cut back on a few non necessities and come up with the money.
But that still didnât solve her âlocked outsideâ problem. She was still standing outside a strangers doorstep with a broken key. She supposed she could maybe crawl through a window? Sheâd have to break it though. And she definitely didnât have the money for that. Thinking of, she wasnât sure why she didnât think of that earlier.
That still didnât address the most immediate problem at hand however. She was still standing outside a strangers door, with a broken key jammed into their lock. With a few deep breaths, she managed to pull herself together enough to actually look at him without an immediate flush of embarrassment and guilt.
âi uhm. I can give you my number! To get a hold of me. To pay for the lock. That I broke. Iâmstillsosorry.â
With a quick hand, she moved a sheet of hair back from her face and pulled out her phone with shaking hands, still frozen despite her heated face. Opening up the dial pad, she held the phone out to him with hurried motions. âHere. Just uhm. Iâll leave you alone after this. Out of your hair.â
She could just like. Walk around for an hour or so. Long enough for him to go to sleep. Then try the window thing. And if that didnât work then there was her original plan. The bus stop or her job. Regardless, sheâd already bothered this guy more than enough.
