She was running before he knew it. And in that moment nothing else mattered. Easton laughed a little, taking off after her, catching up as they reached the shore. He didn’t think about it when he wrapped his arm around her torso, pulling her farther into the water with him before she had the chance to back out. “Did you run track?” He asks, and while it was a simple tease referencing how fast she’d run, he always wanted to know. He kind of wanted to know everything.Â
One second she was running, her feet hitting the water, and the next second they’re not even touching solid ground. He’d grabbed her around the waist— he was so close, she couldn’t breath— and then the water was hitting her thighs. Resa couldn’t stop laughing; she felt nothing and everything. Maybe the water wasn’t even cold. “I did,” she nodded simply, hanging on to his shoulder as she turned to face him, trying not to fall into the water. “The one thing I liked about high school. I was very fast. What did you do in high school?”

“I’m just gonna,” she starts, looking down at her clothes. “I think I’m just gonna wear my clothes, it’s fine.” Resa shrugged off her jacket and dropped it in the sand, starting to walk slowly towards the water before saying, “race ya,” and ran before she could think about how she’d be freezing later.Â

“Not terrible,” he repeats, nodding along. “I think I can work with not terrible for now. That’s actually a lot better than I was anticipating.” He’d made a fool of himself too many times to expect anything else. He hadn’t tried this hard in a long time. He’d never needed to - he’d found everyone he thought he’d need, or want, a long time ago. In came Resa, and here he was, trying. “I think it’s pretty obvious that I want you to.” He glances at the water. “You sure you don’t want to brainstorm another solution?”
All those dumb YA books she’s read never really explained how to be so calm, or how to think of what to say next, but now that this weird odd electric moment is here, Resa’s mind goes blank. In a good way. Like it doesn’t matter what comes out of her mouth, since he’s already broken the ice and made a fool out of himself, too. “It wasn’t obvious before, but it is now,” she says, biting her lip so she doesn’t smile too hard. She has goosebumps. His gaze goes to the water, and she speaks before she can think. “Do you wanna go for a swim?”
