Okay so we all know that the Goosebumps series is notorious for being so over-the-top and hammy and god there were books about giant plants and evil goo and that cuckoo clocks of doom and that one book where the girl turned into a cat.
But god, the first book was so intense!
Literally about ¾ of it is dedicated to showing this family move into a typical suburban house with their dog. And the two siblings make all sorts of new friends and have a great time. Until their dog starts acting weird and they chase him into a cemetery and they see the gravestones of all of their classmates and the one boy the sister had a crush on reveals that he’s dead, that they’re all dead, that he killed their dog, and that he’s about to kill them too and then the brother literally melts him in graphic detail and the other kids arrive and start chasing them through the streets as they search for their parents and the one friendly man who looked after them finds them and kindly accompanies them to look for their parents but then leads them into a trap to kill them and so they use the flashlight to break his head open, revealing his skull, and then they manage to knock over a tree so that the rising sun melts their dead classmates and as the whole family is fleeing the town, they see another family entering, the new victims, the new blood, and they don’t stop to warn them, they don’t help them, they don’t leave them to die in their place.
